Remote Systems Safety Engineer information

What is a remote systems safety engineer?

A Remote Systems Safety Engineer is a professional responsible for ensuring that systems—often in fields like aerospace, automotive, or industrial automation—operate safely and reliably, even when managed or monitored remotely. They analyze potential hazards, develop safety protocols, and perform risk assessments to minimize accidents or failures. This role often involves working with cross-functional teams to implement safety standards and compliance measures, and may include supporting incident investigations and continuous improvement initiatives. Remote Systems Safety Engineers typically use specialized software tools and must stay updated on industry safety regulations.

How does a remote systems safety engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure system safety?

As a Remote Systems Safety Engineer, you will regularly work with cross-functional teams, including design engineers, project managers, quality assurance specialists, and sometimes clients, to identify and mitigate potential safety risks. Collaboration often takes place through virtual meetings, shared documentation, and coordinated risk assessments. A key challenge is maintaining clear and proactive communication despite being remote, ensuring that all safety requirements are understood and integrated throughout the development process. Building strong relationships and leveraging collaborative tools are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote systems safety engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Systems Safety Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering, risk analysis, and safety standards, typically supported by a degree in engineering and experience with safety-critical systems. Familiarity with tools like Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and safety management software, as well as certifications such as CSSBB or CSEP, is often required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective remote communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring the reliability and safety of complex systems while collaborating efficiently in distributed or virtual teams.

What is the difference between Remote Systems Safety Engineer vs Remote Systems Security Engineer?

Job description

Overview
We are designing the grid of the future!
Develop and conduct computer modeling and analysis for transmission planning studies which include steady state analysis, short circuit analysis, and dynamic stability analysis. Studies may include near-term and long-term transmission planning, generator interconnection studies, reliability-driven transmission project alternatives development, and NERC standards compliance analyses.
Responsibilities
How you can make an impact:
  • Perform power system impact studies: Steady State, Short Circuit, and Dynamic Stability.
  • Perform NERC-compliance-related technical analyses such as TPL Annual Planning Assessments.
  • Perform full generator interconnection studies which may also include Sub-Synchronous Resonance (SSR) studies.
  • Ensure that renewable and/or storage resource projects interconnecting to the transmission system meet Voltage Ride-Through (VRT) requirements.
  • Prepare technical study reports for all studies performed. Process, generate, and maintain data as required for all studies.
  • Take responsibility for the timely completion of projects assigned while meeting all project quality and budget objectives.
  • Identify training needs and present to the Engineering Manager as needed.

Qualifications
Bring your passion, here what's needed:
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, emphasis in Power Systems preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience as a power systems engineer
  • Experience performing power system impact studies such as Dynamic Stability, Steady State, and Short Circuit.
  • Experience with power systems software such as PSS/E, PSLF, PSCAD, Aspen, and TARA.
  • Ability to provide on the job training or help oversee the work of other Power Systems Engineers and Interns.
  • Experience automating/programming in Python preferred.
  • Experience leveraging AI and automation tools responsibly to improve quality, productivity and innovation
  • Proven team player with the ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal, particularly with respect to explaining technical matters.
