Instructional Design Consultant (Remote Eligible)

Job Summary/Basic Function:

Assist faculty through consultations, trainings, and referrals in learning and using instructional technologies such as learning management systems, collaboration software, digital images, video, audio, and classroom presentation tools.
This position may have the opportunity to work remotely, where all work is performed from an approved alternative work location. To be eligible, candidates must reside in one of the following states to be considered: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, or Wyoming. Candidates in this role must be able to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (Mountain Time), providing real-time support through Zoom, chat, and email while also completing assigned duties based on priorities.
This position is not eligible for VISA Sponsorship.

The Division of Extended Studies is on a mission to extend higher education beyond traditional boundaries. Our collaborative teams expand student access and improve student success with innovative programs that reach across our metropolitan area, Idaho and beyond. We facilitate online education, community-based programs, concurrent enrollment at high schools, summer sessions, continuing education programs and other lifelong learning options. Join us!
The Boise State eCampus Center is dedicated to expanding online degrees and classes beyond the traditional boundaries to meet the academic needs of students anytime and anywhere. We partner with faculty, departments and leadership to create a high-quality online learning environment for students at Boise State and around the world. This position will contribute to the design of online courses and is a part of the Instructional Design Services team within the eCampus Center.

Level Scope:

Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of area typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures.

Essential Functions:

Assist with the creation and maintenance of tutorials, tools, and templates based on quality standards and instructional design principles to accelerate the efficient and effective design and development of online courses and to meet the specific needs of the disciplines and programs.
Work with multiple deadlines and multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, changing environment.
Work closely with the Faculty Development Coordinator and other stakeholders to provide quality customer service to faculty and staff dedicated to professional development related to online teaching and learning.
Serve as project lead for online course design and development projects, coordinating with stakeholders, including faculty developers and online program coordinators, to ensure project goals are met on time and within and departmental specifications.
Work with supervisor to identify the areas of most importance and best avenues to pursue.
Working as part of a team as well as individually, provide effective instructional design consultation and direct support to academic programs and faculty preparing to teach online.
Support the programs and activities of Extended Studies staff. Represent Boise State, Extended Studies, and the eCampus Center professionally on appropriate committees, task forces, and work groups.
Perform other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Project management skills demonstrating strong conceptual and analytical skills, planning abilities, and sound judgment
Familiar with usability/accessibility requirements such as ADA Section 580, universal design strategies in online learning environments, and W3C Web Accessibility Initiative and Guidelines; student identity authentication; and technology issues specific to fully online education.
Ability to design and implement programs to ensure institutional compliance with federal, state, and university policies and best practices
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Creative, practical problem-identification, reporting, and solving skills
Demonstrated ability to successfully develop and maintain positive, collaborative, respect-based relationships with co-workers, customers, and stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and cooperatively as a member of a team
Experience teaching online higher education academic courses and knowledge of trends and future directions of educational technology related to online higher education.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduate degree in educational technology, instructional design, education/curriculum development, or related discipline from an accredited college or university.
3 or more years of demonstrated experience in instructional design.
2 or more years of demonstrated experience working directly with higher education faculty in a support role.
2 or more years of demonstrated experience assisting others in the design of their course.
2 or more years of experience as a teacher, trainer, and/or professional development instructor for adult learners.
Training and experience using the Quality Matters rubric.
2 or more years of experience providing consultation to faculty and staff on instructional design to enhance online learning experiences.
2 or more years of experience managing projects involving a team
2 or more years of experience working with learning management/online learning platforms (i.e. Canvas).

Salary and Benefits:
Salary of $66,705.60/yr. Boise State University provides a best-in-class benefits package, including (but not limited to):
  • 12 paid holidays AND the University is closed between Christmas and New Year's (requires use of 3 vacation days)
