How much do remote structural packaging design jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 22, 2026, the average yearly pay for remote structural packaging design in the United States is $102,774.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $74,000.00 and $132,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is remote structural packaging design?

Remote structural packaging design involves creating the physical structure and form of packaging solutions, such as boxes, containers, or display units, while working from a location outside the traditional office or studio. Designers use digital tools and collaborate virtually with clients and teams to develop packaging that protects products, enhances branding, and meets logistical requirements. This role requires knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and sustainability considerations. Remote work in this field allows for flexibility but also demands strong communication and project management skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote structural packaging designer?

To thrive as a Remote Structural Packaging Designer, you need expertise in packaging engineering, material science, and design principles, typically supported by a degree in packaging design or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software (such as ArtiosCAD or SolidWorks), 3D modeling tools, and familiarity with prototyping and manufacturing processes are crucial. Strong communication, creativity, and problem-solving skills help in collaborating remotely with teams and translating client needs into innovative packaging solutions. These skills ensure that designs are functional, cost-effective, visually appealing, and manufacturable within remote, multidisciplinary environments.

What are some common challenges faced by remote structural packaging designers, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge for remote structural packaging designers is collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams, such as marketing, manufacturing, and logistics, without in-person meetings. Clear communication, regular video conferences, and sharing detailed 3D models or prototypes digitally help bridge this gap. Additionally, remote designers may face difficulties in accessing physical samples or testing materials, which can be mitigated by partnering closely with local suppliers and using virtual prototyping tools. Adapting to these workflows not only increases efficiency but also fosters stronger relationships with team members across different locations.

ROLE SUMMARY
As a Structural Design Engineer, you'll lead high-impact structural design work for utility-scale renewable energy and substation projects, turning complex requirements into buildable, code-compliant solutions.
You'll bring seasoned engineering judgment, take ownership from concept through IFC deliverables, and collaborate with a mission-driven team that values quality, curiosity, and continuous improvement. This role is built for an experienced engineer ready to mentor others, elevate standards, and make a meaningful difference in the energy transition.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
ENGINEERING & TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Create structural engineering plans, details, and calculations for renewable energy and substation projects.
  • Design concrete or steel foundations for project equipment to meet jurisdictional requirements at local, State and Federal levels for various geotechnical parameters and soil types.
  • Acquire and apply advanced knowledge of renewable energy system layouts and components such as modules, racking, inverters, and Balance of Systems (BOS).
  • Design a project, system, component, or process, and prepare project documentation.
  • Formulate and solve problems.
  • Independently evaluate, select, and apply standard procedures and criteria.
  • Develop a work plan for project tasks and discipline team members.
  • Lead multiple projects and may act as Engineer of Record.

QUALITY & COLLABORATION
  • Ensure compliance with company, industry, trade, and jurisdictional safety standards, practices, and codes.
  • Support client interaction for multiple projects in a single portfolio.
  • Assign tasks to and direct discipline team members to complete assignments.
  • Provide mentoring for staff engineers.
  • Assist with proposals to provide professional services.
  • Attend project meetings and present specific aspects of engineering assignments with high proficiency and confidence.
  • Receive guidance when necessary on unconventional or complex problems, and a review of completed work for application of sound professional judgment.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform essential duties, including meeting deliverables and deadlines.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or directed.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
REQUIRED
  • Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering.
  • 5+ years' experience in a structural engineering design role.
  • In-depth knowledge of software tools including RISA 2D/3D/Foundation, Enercalc, L-PILE, or similar.
  • Strong familiarity with ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360/341, IBC, NDS, and other relevant codes and standards.
  • Ability to read and understand site studies, geotechnical reports, and civil, structural, and architectural drawings.
  • Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be both creative and analytical.
  • Detail-oriented and accurate.
PREFERRED
  • Professional Engineering (PE) licensure or EIT Certificate is strongly preferred.
  • 2+ years' experience with utility or commercial solar PV systems, substations, or energy storage system design is strongly preferred.

BENEFITS FOR FULL-TIME POSITIONS
  • Competitive compensation with bonus.
  • Full benefits package including 99% employer-paid health, vision, life, and dental insurance.
  • Medical, dependent care, and commuter FSA.
  • Monthly health and wellness stipend.
