What is remote structural engineering research?

Remote structural engineering research involves conducting studies and analyses related to the design, analysis, and behavior of structures, but from a location outside of a traditional laboratory or office—often from home or another remote setting. This work typically uses digital tools, software simulations, and remote collaboration to investigate structural systems, materials, and methods. Researchers may focus on topics such as structural safety, innovative materials, building codes, and disaster resilience. Remote roles often require strong skills in computational modeling, data analysis, and virtual communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote structural engineering researcher?

To thrive as a Remote Structural Engineering Researcher, you need an advanced degree in structural or civil engineering, strong analytical skills, and a solid understanding of mechanics and materials. Proficiency in structural analysis software (such as SAP2000, ANSYS, or ABAQUS), programming languages like MATLAB or Python, and familiarity with research methodologies are essential. Exceptional written communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving abilities distinguish top performers in remote research roles. These skills ensure rigorous, innovative, and reliable research outcomes while facilitating effective collaboration and independent work in a remote setting.

What are some common challenges faced by remote structural engineering researchers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote structural engineering researchers often encounter challenges related to effective communication and collaboration with team members, especially when working across different time zones. Accessing specialized software or large datasets can also be a hurdle due to varying hardware capabilities or internet connectivity. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication protocols, schedule regular virtual meetings, and utilize cloud-based platforms for sharing resources and conducting simulations. Proactively reaching out for feedback and participating in online research forums can also help maintain a sense of connection and support.

What is the difference between Remote Structural Engineering Research vs Remote Civil Engineering Design?

Job description

Unmatched Comp Time Policy: Hours worked over 40 in a week can be reimbursed as additional pay at an equivalent hourly rate or banked as additional PTO.
Have you spent years managing schedules, resolving field issues, negotiating change orders, and delivering complex heavy civil projects? If you're ready to apply that experience in a more flexible, strategic role - without the constant pressure of life on a job site- we would like to talk.
We're seeking a Structures Cost Estimator / Constructability Specialist who understands how projects are built and can translate that knowledge into reliable estimates, identify risk, constructability evaluations, and help project teams make better decisions before construction begins.
This role is ideal for experienced construction professionals who want to remain engaged in major infrastructure projects while shifting focus to strategy, planning, and problem-solving rather than daily field emergencies.

Position is remote and part-time work eligible, but the candidate must live in the Wasatch Front or Northern Utah area.
  • Develop conceptual, historical, and production-based estimates for Structural Heavy Highway and Heavy Civil infrastructure projects
  • Coordinate with industry contacts to maintain knowledge of current pricing and bidding conditions to aid in the development of project budgets
  • Provides structural estimates, cost control strategies, cost forecasting, constructability reviews, and risk analysis for construction projects
  • Maintains files of project estimates and supporting backup documentation for reference during project execution
  • Work individually and with project teams to assist clients with estimating services (both pre and post letting) during plan and specification development and change order negotiations
  • BS in Engineering, Construction, or related field plus 7 years' experience OR more than 15 years' experience in structural heavy civil estimating, construction management, field engineering, and/or estimating
  • Working knowledge in use of HCSS HeavyBid and/or other estimating software applications
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment with project teams and owner's representatives
  • Knowledge of state and local construction specifications and software systems
At Horrocks, you can expect a competitive base salary and award-winning benefits. Including, but not limited to:
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance
