What is a remote storage engineer?

A Remote Storage Engineer is an IT professional who specializes in designing, implementing, and managing data storage solutions for organizations while working remotely. Their responsibilities include configuring storage systems, troubleshooting storage-related issues, ensuring data security, and optimizing storage performance. They often work with technologies such as cloud storage, SAN (Storage Area Network), and NAS (Network Attached Storage). Remote Storage Engineers play a crucial role in maintaining data integrity and accessibility, especially for businesses with distributed or cloud-based infrastructure.

What does a remote storage engineer do?

As a remote storage engineer, you work from home to design and maintain information storage systems for clients. In this virtual position, your duties involve creating a database infrastructure that meets the needs of each client with whom you work. Part of your job involves assessing the specific needs of the client and designing appropriate solutions. You build or configure software, hardware, or cloud-computing systems, and you provide support and training for the employees who use the system. Other responsibilities include making updates, backing up data, and building and monitoring the network that connects to the data storage system.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote storage engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Storage Engineer, you need strong expertise in storage technologies, data management, and backup solutions, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with systems like SAN/NAS, cloud storage platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and certifications such as CompTIA Storage+ or vendor-specific credentials are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help you address issues efficiently while collaborating across remote teams. These skills and qualities ensure robust data availability, security, and seamless support for distributed enterprise environments.

How do remote storage engineers typically collaborate with on-site IT teams to resolve storage issues?

Remote Storage Engineers frequently work closely with on-site IT teams to diagnose and resolve storage-related incidents. This collaboration often involves remote access to systems, regular video or conference calls, and utilizing ticketing systems to track progress. Strong communication skills are essential, as Remote Storage Engineers must clearly document troubleshooting steps and coordinate actions, sometimes even guiding on-site staff through physical hardware checks or replacements. This teamwork ensures efficient resolution of issues despite physical distance.

Job description

Company Overview

At Volie, we build communication software for automotive dealerships. Our platform helps dealerships modernize customer communication across sales, service, BDC operations, and customer engagement. Volie supports high-volume, multi-channel communication workflows that help dealerships improve response times, customer experience, operational visibility, and team performance.

We are a growing SaaS company with a practical, ownership-driven culture. We value people who communicate clearly, solve problems directly, and take pride in building products that customers actually use.

As Volie continues to grow, reporting and analytics are becoming a major part of our product strategy. We are investing in a modern data platform built around Snowflake, dbt Cloud, and BI tooling to create clearer, more consistent, and more trusted reporting for customers and internal teams.

Candidates in Florida or Colorado are preferred. This is a 100% remote position.

Position Overview

Volie is seeking a mid-level Analytics Engineer to help build and maintain our modern reporting layer.

This role is responsible for turning raw application, communication, and customer data into trusted reporting models, metrics, dashboards, and business insights. The ideal candidate is strong in SQL, comfortable working with Snowflake and dbt, and interested in making reporting accurate, consistent, and useful.

This is not just a dashboard-building role. The Analytics Engineer will work across the reporting stack, including replicated source data, Snowflake models, dbt transformations, BI dashboards, metric definitions, and data validation.

The right candidate should enjoy solving reporting problems, investigating data discrepancies, defining metrics clearly, and helping business users understand what the data means.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain reporting models in Snowflake.
  • Develop and maintain dbt Cloud models, tests, and documentation.
  • Create and support facts, dimensions, marts, aggregate tables, and reusable reporting logic.
  • Support dashboards, metrics, dimensions, filters, and drill paths in Omni or similar BI tools.
  • Write SQL to support reporting, analysis, validation, troubleshooting, and performance improvement.
  • Help define and document consistent reporting logic and business metrics.
  • Validate data accuracy between Postgres, replicated data, Snowflake, dbt, and BI outputs.
  • Investigate reporting discrepancies and explain root causes clearly.
  • Monitor data freshness, data quality, and model failures.
  • Support the migration of legacy reports into Volie's modern reporting platform.
  • Work with Product, Customer Success, Engineering, and leadership to understand reporting needs.
  • Translate business questions into reliable data models and dashboards.
  • Help improve performance and cost efficiency of Snowflake queries and reporting models.
  • Support replication and ingestion workflows by helping validate loads, identify data gaps, and troubleshoot freshness issues.

What Success Looks Like

  • Reporting models are accurate, consistent, and trusted.
  • Dashboards and reports are easier for internal teams and customers to understand.
  • Metric definitions are documented and used consistently.
  • Reporting discrepancies are investigated quickly and explained clearly.
  • dbt models are tested, documented, and maintainable.
  • Snowflake queries are performant and cost-conscious.
  • Product and Customer Success teams have better visibility into reporting behavior and data definitions.
  • Legacy reporting logic is gradually replaced with modern, scalable reporting models.
  • The reporting platform becomes more reliable and easier to build on over time.

Qualifications

  • 2-5+ years of experience in analytics engineering, BI development, data analysis, data warehousing, or a related role.
  • Strong SQL skills, including joins, CTEs, aggregations, window functions, and query debugging.
  • Experience with Snowflake or another modern cloud data warehouse.
  • Experience with dbt or a similar data transformation framework.
  • Experience building or supporting BI dashboards.
  • Strong understanding of data modeling concepts such as facts, dimensions, grain, and metric definitions.
  • Ability to validate data and investigate discrepancies across systems.
  • Comfort working with relational source data, preferably Postgres.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ownership over data accuracy.
  • Comfortable working with evolving business definitions and imperfect source data.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Omni, Looker, Sigma, Tableau, Power BI, Mode, or similar BI tools.
  • Experience with dbt Cloud.
  • Experience with SaaS reporting or customer-facing analytics.
  • Experience with multi-tenant customer data.
  • Experience with CDC, replication, ELT pipelines, or source-to-target reconciliation.
  • Experience with AWS S3, AWS DMS, or staged file loads.
  • Experience with Snowflake tasks, stages, or streams.
  • Experience with data quality testing, freshness checks, and reconciliation processes.
  • Experience working with Customer Success, Product, or business stakeholders to define reporting requirements.

Our Culture

Volie is a scrappy, focused team solving complex problems in the automotive software space. We value ownership, clear communication, practical problem-solving, and people who are willing to dig into hard problems until they understand them.

We are not looking for someone who only wants to receive perfect requirements and build simple dashboards. We are looking for someone who wants to help make reporting a trusted product capability.

This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys technical data work, cares about accuracy, and wants to have a direct impact on how customers and internal teams understand performance.

Why Join Volie?

  • Make an Impact: Reporting is a major strategic focus for Volie, and this role will directly influence the quality and trustworthiness of our reporting platform.
  • Modern Data Stack: Work with Snowflake, dbt Cloud, BI tooling, and replicated application data.
  • Real Ownership: Help define reporting logic, validate data, and improve how teams use information.
  • Collaborative Culture: Work with Product, Engineering, Customer Success, and leadership to solve meaningful reporting problems.

  • Growth Opportunity: Help mature a modern reporting platform during an important stage of company growth.
