What does a remote sound engineer do?

A Remote Sound Engineer is responsible for managing, mixing, and editing audio for various projects from a remote location, rather than on-site. They work with clients and teams online to ensure high-quality sound for music, podcasts, film, or live streams. This role often involves using specialized audio software, collaborating via communication tools, and troubleshooting technical issues remotely. Their expertise ensures that the final audio product meets industry standards and client expectations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote sound engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Sound Engineer, you need expertise in audio engineering principles, signal flow, recording, mixing, and often a relevant degree or certification in audio production. Proficiency with digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools, Logic Pro, or Ableton Live, as well as remote collaboration tools, is typically required. Attention to detail, strong communication, and problem-solving skills help ensure smooth remote workflows and client satisfaction. These abilities are crucial for producing high-quality audio content and meeting client expectations in a distributed work environment.

How do remote sound engineers typically collaborate with artists and production teams during projects?

Remote sound engineers frequently use cloud-based platforms and communication tools to collaborate effectively with artists, producers, and other team members. They often attend virtual meetings, share project files through secure file transfer services, and provide real-time feedback via video calls or messaging. Clear communication and organized file management are essential, as engineers may work across different time zones and need to coordinate revisions promptly. This collaborative approach allows remote sound engineers to deliver high-quality work while maintaining flexibility and responsiveness.

What is the difference between Remote Sound Engineer vs Remote Audio Technician?

AspectRemote Sound EngineerRemote Audio Technician
CredentialsAudio engineering degree or certification, technical skillsTechnical training or certification, practical audio skills

Remote Sound Engineers focus on mixing, editing, and producing audio content, often requiring advanced technical skills and certifications. Remote Audio Technicians handle equipment setup, troubleshooting, and maintenance, typically with practical training. Both roles work remotely but serve different functions within the audio industry.

Are remote sound engineers in demand?

Remote sound engineers are in increasing demand due to the growth of online media, virtual events, and remote production projects. Skills in digital audio workstations, editing, and communication tools are essential, and many companies seek professionals who can work independently in a flexible environment.

Can a remote sound engineer work remotely?

Yes, a remote sound engineer can work remotely, as many audio editing, mixing, and mastering tasks can be performed using digital audio workstations and online collaboration tools. This allows sound engineers to work from any location, provided they have the necessary equipment, a stable internet connection, and relevant technical skills. However, some roles may require on-site presence for recording sessions or equipment setup.

Job description

Flex-N-Gate is seeking a full-time Full-Stack Software Developer to join our growing in-house software development team.

This position will primarily support Midas, Flex-N-Gateโ€™s internally developed Manufacturing Execution System. Midas is an enterprise application used in our manufacturing facilities to support production tracking, machine activity, downtime, scrap, quality, operational reporting, and other plant-floor business processes.

The developer will help build new Midas capabilities, maintain and improve existing functionality, and troubleshoot issues across the application, database, and manufacturing-system integration layers.

Our primary technology stack includes C#, ASP.NET Core, Entity Framework Core, Microsoft SQL Server, Vue.js, JavaScript, and Tailwind CSS.

The ideal candidate is passionate about developing reliable, maintainable software and applying sound programming practices. They should be comfortable learning an established application and manufacturing domain, investigating complex problems, and working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

This is a remote position.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy full-stack features for the Midas Manufacturing Execution System.
  • Build and maintain applications using C#, .NET, ASP.NET Core, Entity Framework Core, SQL Server, Vue.js, and JavaScript.
  • Develop software that supports shop-floor and manufacturing business processes.
  • Create and maintain REST APIs, background services, database models, reports, dashboards, and user interfaces.
  • Maintain existing software systems through bug fixes, performance improvements, refactoring, and enhancements.
  • Investigate production issues involving application code, databases, integrations, and plant-floor data.
  • Work with production, quality, engineering, IT, and plant leadership to understand business needs and translate them into practical software solutions.
  • Develop reporting and visualization tools for production, downtime, scrap, quality, OEE, and resource-utilization data.
  • Improve application performance, reliability, maintainability, security, and data integrity.
  • Participate in technical design discussions, code reviews, testing, documentation, and deployment activities.
  • Support the rollout of new Midas features across multiple manufacturing facilities.
  • Balance long-term system improvements with the immediate operational needs of active production environments.
Required Qualifications
  • Three or more years of professional web or application development experience.
  • Professional experience developing applications with C# and .NET, or substantial experience with a comparable server-side development platform.
  • Experience with ASP.NET Core, MVC, or similar application frameworks.
  • Experience with Entity Framework Core or another object-relational mapping framework.
  • Strong SQL skills, including relational database design, normalization, querying, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, or another enterprise relational database platform.
  • Experience with a modern frontend framework such as Vue.js, React, or Angular.
  • Strong JavaScript, HTML, and CSS skills.
  • Experience designing, building, or consuming SOAP and REST APIs.
  • Understanding of the software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve technical issues with minimal guidance.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing reliable, maintainable software.
  • Post-secondary education in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Vue.js and the Vue ecosystem.
  • Experience with .NET 6 or later.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server and Entity Framework Core.
  • Experience using Git and GitHub or another distributed version-control platform.
  • Experience with Tailwind CSS or another utility-based CSS framework.
  • Experience with Sass, Less, or another CSS preprocessor.
  • Experience with Chart.js or other charting and data-visualization libraries.
  • Experience with automated testing, continuous integration, and continuous deployment.
  • Experience optimizing SQL queries, database indexes, and application performance.
  • Experience working with high-volume production, event, or time-series data.
  • Knowledge of user experience and user-interface design principles.
  • Experience with enterprise applications deployed across multiple locations.
  • Experience supporting, modernizing, or extending established software systems.
  • Knowledge of Manufacturing Execution Systems, Enterprise Resource Planning systems, industrial automation, or plant-floor integrations.
  • Familiarity with PLC-generated data, machine connectivity, or manufacturing equipment integrations.
  • Knowledge of the automotive or other manufacturing industries.
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field.
Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will:

  • Take ownership of problems from investigation through implementation and deployment.
  • Be comfortable working within and improving an established enterprise application.
  • Be curious about manufacturing processes and how software can improve plant operations.
  • Be able to work independently while collaborating closely with other developers and business stakeholders.
  • Be willing to learn new technologies, systems, and business processes.
  • Understand that software used in active manufacturing environments must be dependable, accurate, and supportable.
Why Join the Midas Team
  • Build software that has a direct and visible impact on manufacturing operations.
  • Work on an internally owned enterprise platform used across multiple manufacturing facilities.
  • Develop substantial features from initial requirements through production rollout.
  • Solve interesting problems involving software, databases, machines, production data, and real-world operations.
  • Help shape the future architecture, functionality, and user experience of a growing Manufacturing Execution System.
