What is a Remote Solar Performance Engineer?

A Remote Solar Performance Engineer is a professional who monitors, analyzes, and optimizes the performance of solar power systems from a remote location. They use specialized software and tools to track energy production, identify issues, and recommend improvements for solar installations. Their work helps ensure that solar energy systems operate efficiently and meet performance goals, often collaborating with on-site technicians and project managers. This role is crucial for maintaining the reliability and profitability of solar power assets, especially in geographically dispersed installations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Solar Performance Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Solar Performance Engineer, you need a solid grounding in electrical or mechanical engineering, solar PV systems, and data analysis, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with solar monitoring software, SCADA systems, and data analytics platforms, as well as certifications like NABCEP, is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure accurate performance analysis, timely issue resolution, and optimized energy output for solar installations.

How does a Remote Solar Performance Engineer typically collaborate with on-site teams to resolve system issues?

Remote Solar Performance Engineers play a critical role in diagnosing and troubleshooting performance issues by analyzing data from monitoring systems. They often collaborate closely with on-site technicians and field engineers via virtual meetings, detailed reports, and real-time communication tools. When a performance anomaly is detected, the remote engineer pinpoints the issue and provides actionable recommendations, ensuring on-site teams can address problems efficiently. This collaborative structure helps maximize system uptime and maintain optimal energy output.

What is the difference between Remote Solar Performance Engineer vs Remote Solar Design Engineer?

AspectRemote Solar Performance EngineerRemote Solar Design Engineer
Primary FocusOptimizing solar system performance, analyzing data, troubleshooting issuesCreating system layouts, designing solar panel configurations, selecting components
Required SkillsData analysis, performance monitoring, electrical knowledgeDesign software proficiency, electrical and mechanical design skills
Work EnvironmentField data analysis, remote monitoring, collaboration with installation teamsOffice-based design work, remote collaboration with engineers and clients
CertificationsPV installation certifications, electrical certifications often preferredDesign certifications like NABCEP Designer, CAD proficiency

The Remote Solar Performance Engineer focuses on analyzing and improving the efficiency of existing solar systems through data analysis and troubleshooting. In contrast, the Remote Solar Design Engineer specializes in designing new solar systems, creating layouts, and selecting components. Both roles require technical knowledge and certifications, but their core responsibilities differ in system optimization versus system design.

As part of the Engineering Department, the High Voltage Engineering team delivers preconstruction engineering and construction/commissioning engineering for High Voltage facilities associated with renewable energy power plants.

We are currently looking for a substation or transmission engineer to oversee the execution of high voltage projects located across the country but heavily in the Western United States portfolio (Texas, California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and Hawaii). The engineer for this position should enjoy the versatility of technical tasks with a strong focus on understanding grid integration requirements for renewables and data centers. The role is that of an owner's engineer to oversee high voltage designs from EPC firms contracted to design and build the high voltage facilities for our projects to ensure it meets interconnection and commercial requirements, and to provide technical oversight during the construction. Strong experience in detailed substation design and/or transmission line design preferred.

A ideal candidate would be one who can coordinate deliverables through internal and external parties, has a wide breadth of technical skills (e.g. P&C design, physical substation design, modelling, interconnection, t-line design), passionate about continual learning and working as part of a team.

This position is open to non-senior candidates who are passionate about learning, demonstrate extreme ownership and have a demonstrated history of growing in rapid environments. Listed below are the differences between seniors and non-senior positions.

We are open to considering U.S. remote-based candidates, preferably located in the Pacific (PST) or Mountain (MST) time zones.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for oversight of EPC contractor engineering design and construction activities for Solar, Wind, and BESS collector high voltage substations and transmission lines (35kV to 500kV).

  • Establish and maintain relationships with high voltage contractors.

  • Review Substation EPC designs for compliance with interconnection agreement requirements, applicable reliability standards, standard industry practices, etc.

  • Provide design review and advice on any issues that appear technically incorrect or inconsistent with project documentation.

  • Coordinate the review power system studies such as load flows, short circuits, harmonics, TOV, insulation coordination, etc.

  • Direct coordination with Interconnection Providers(utilities) to design collector substations to include Transmission Provider requirements and internal stakeholders while including AES specifications.

  • Coordinate Generation Tie line or Transmission line design with EPC and internal stakeholders to ensure it remains within the project requirements.
