What is remote software testing?

Remote software testing is the process of evaluating and verifying the functionality, performance, and security of software applications from a location outside the traditional office environment. Testers use various tools and platforms to access applications, execute test cases, report bugs, and collaborate with development teams online. This approach allows companies to leverage global talent, reduce costs, and offer flexible work arrangements while maintaining high-quality software standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software tester?

To thrive as a Remote Software Tester, you need a solid understanding of software development lifecycle, test case design, bug reporting, and typically a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with testing tools such as Selenium, JIRA, TestRail, and knowledge of automation frameworks or ISTQB certification is often required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and self-motivation are essential soft skills in this remote role. These skills ensure accurate testing, clear documentation, and seamless collaboration with distributed teams, leading to higher software quality.

How do remote software testers effectively communicate and collaborate with development teams?

Remote software testers typically use a variety of collaboration tools such as project management platforms, instant messaging, and video conferencing to stay connected with developers and other stakeholders. Clear, timely communication is essential for reporting bugs, sharing test results, and discussing requirements or issues. Regular stand-up meetings and detailed documentation help ensure everyone stays aligned, even when working across different time zones. Building strong relationships with team members and proactively raising concerns can also improve workflow and project outcomes.

Job description

Summary

Vital Services is seeking a talented and experienced Mid-Level Software Engineer to join our growing Application Engineering department. This is an extraordinary opportunity to be a part of, and play an integral role in, the expansion of our Information Technology team.

The core focus of this role is to write clean, secure, and highly efficient code that successfully implements functional requirements, ensuring rapid features delivery and high system reliability across active product and T&M client queues.

Roles & Responsibilities of the Software Engineer
  • Feature Implementation & Delivery: Writing well-structured, testable, and maintainable application code that fulfills documented user stories and technical design specs.
  • Defect Resolution & Support Execution: Investigating, triaging, and patching software bugs and performance issues efficiently across SaaS platforms and custom client applications.
  • API & Data Flow Execution: Building and consuming secure web services, endpoints, and third-party API extractions based on the patterns outlined by the Architect.
  • Code Quality & Testing Discipline: Participating actively in peer code reviews, adhering to organizational standards, and writing comprehensive unit and integration tests.
  • Sprint Hygiene & Operational Visibility: Estimating assigned tasks accurately, updating Jira tickets daily, and actively raising dependencies during sprint ceremonies to protect velocity.
Skills & Experience of the Software Engineer
  • Professional Core Experience: 3-6 years of verified full-stack or backend software engineering experience operating within an agile team ecosystem (experience in multi-client agency or SaaS environments is a plus).
  • Technical Stack Proficiency: Solid proficiency in C# languages and core object-oriented programming methodologies in a Microsoft tech stack environment.
  • Database Conversance: Clear comfort writing optimized queries and interacting with relational or non-relational database engines (e.g., SQL/MySQL).
  • Version Control Mastery: Complete fluency with Git workflow mechanics, branching strategies, and handling merge conflicts cleanly.
  • Implementation Mindset: A strong track record of taking well-defined, abstract functional requirements and successfully transforming them into live, working software capabilities without needing extensive architectural oversight.
Success Metrics of the Software Engineer
  • Individual Sprint Say/Do Ratio: >= 80% predictability on completing committed sprint tasks and feature points.
  • Code Review Turnaround Time: Review and provide actionable feedback on peer pull requests within an average of < 24 hours to prevent pipeline blockages.
  • Post-Deployment Defect Leaks: Maintain a threshold of < 2 critical execution defects or breaking bugs introduced to production environments per quarter.
  • Jira & Time-Tracking Accuracy: 100% weekly compliance on task logging, feature estimations, and accurate time log entries.
Compensation & Culture

Salary Range: $95,000 $115,000 (Mid-Level) - Final offer will be commensurate with experience and technical assessment results.

Hybrid Flexibility: We value our culture in our offices in Allen, TX and Oak Ridge, TN, but offer a flexible hybrid or remote schedule based on team project needs rather than a rigid clock-in / in-office requirement.

Growth Path: This position was created by a team member's promotion. We actively invest in our engineers' career trajectories into senior engineering or architecture roles.
