Remote Software Testing information

What is remote software testing?

Remote software testing is the process of evaluating and verifying the functionality, performance, and security of software applications from a location outside the traditional office environment. Testers use various tools and platforms to access applications, execute test cases, report bugs, and collaborate with development teams online. This approach allows companies to leverage global talent, reduce costs, and offer flexible work arrangements while maintaining high-quality software standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software tester?

To thrive as a Remote Software Tester, you need a solid understanding of software development lifecycle, test case design, bug reporting, and typically a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with testing tools such as Selenium, JIRA, TestRail, and knowledge of automation frameworks or ISTQB certification is often required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and self-motivation are essential soft skills in this remote role. These skills ensure accurate testing, clear documentation, and seamless collaboration with distributed teams, leading to higher software quality.

What is the difference between Remote Software Testing vs Remote QA Analyst?

Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding testing roles, entry-level testing jobsQA processes, quality assurance careers, detailed QA roles

Remote Software Testing focuses on executing test cases and identifying bugs, often requiring basic certifications and technical knowledge. Remote QA Analysts have a broader role, including testing, process analysis, and quality improvement, often with additional certifications. Both roles are remote and industry-specific, but QA Analysts typically engage in more comprehensive quality assurance activities.

How do remote software testers effectively communicate and collaborate with development teams?

Remote software testers typically use a variety of collaboration tools such as project management platforms, instant messaging, and video conferencing to stay connected with developers and other stakeholders. Clear, timely communication is essential for reporting bugs, sharing test results, and discussing requirements or issues. Regular stand-up meetings and detailed documentation help ensure everyone stays aligned, even when working across different time zones. Building strong relationships with team members and proactively raising concerns can also improve workflow and project outcomes.

Toast is a rapidly growing company that's revolutionizing how the restaurant industry does business by pairing technology with an extraordinary commitment to customer success. We help restaurants streamline operations, increase revenue, and deliver amazing guest experiences through our platform that combines restaurant point of sale, team management, guest-facing technology, and award-winning customer support. Join us as we empower the restaurant community to delight guests, do what they love, and thrive.

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join in building the Scheduling product as part of Toast's Team Management Suite for restaurant employers. You'll play a key roll* in the design, development, and delivery of scalable software solutions that enable restaurant owners to build an optimal labor plan that balances interests in profitability, employee's desire for predictability and flexibility, and guest satisfaction.

About this roll*:

As a Software Engineer on our team, you will:

  • Build, run, and improve core backend systems alongside a collaborative, supportive team.
  • Take end-to-end ownership of systems, contributing to a strong engineering culture focused on quality, reliability, and long-term maintainability
  • Lead work across the full development lifecycle-design, estimation, implementation, testing, debugging, and deployment-while learning and applying best practices for building and operating reliable systems at scale.
  • Ship code that directly impacts Toast's growth and the day-to-day operations of restaurant teams
  • Partner with product and design to influence what we build and how we build it
  • Contribute to and elevate team standards through thoughtful code reviews and technical discussions
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to other team members

Do you have the right ingredients*?

  • 5+ years of back-end experience with one or more object-oriented programming languages (such as Java, Kotlin, or similar).
  • Experience owning and operating production systems.
  • A track record of tackling ambiguous, high-impact challenges and delivering scalable solutions
  • Ability and motivation to learn quickly and apply knowledge to solve real problems
  • A hunger to take on challenging projects and build systems that operate at massive scale.

Above all, we're looking for a strong engineer with solid fundamentals.

This role is for a current vacancy.
