What is a remote software engineer?

Remote Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain software applications from locations outside of a traditional office environment. They collaborate with teams and clients using digital communication tools, allowing for flexible work arrangements. Remote Software Engineers require strong technical and communication skills, as well as the ability to manage their own schedules and work independently. This role is ideal for individuals who are self-motivated and comfortable working in a virtual setting.

What does a remote software engineer do?

As a remote software engineer, you work from home to create and develop systems using programming languages and frameworks. As part of your duties, you design and install software solutions by determining specifications and developing code. You also improve software initiatives by reviewing systems and recommending solutions, often virtually guiding clients through the database, network, and computer processes. By collecting and analyzing issues, you can develop solutions for a variety of technical problems. The remote aspect of this job means you can work from anywhere with a reliable internet connection.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, proficiency in software development methodologies, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. These can be effectively managed by utilizing collaboration tools (like Slack or Zoom), setting clear expectations with team members, and establishing a dedicated workspace. Regular check-ins, asynchronous updates, and proactive communication help ensure everyone stays aligned on project goals. Building strong relationships with colleagues through virtual meetings and team-building activities can also foster a supportive remote work environment.

Job Description

Job Summary:

Works cross functionally to understand business requirements, architecture and technology direction, evaluate alternative approaches and ensure software and systems are designed accordingly. Incorporates state-of-the-art concepts and practices to facilitate system functionality, scalability, resilience and security as well as ease-of-use (developer / user experience). Applies agile principles to software development with a focus on delivery of business value, collaboration, continuous improvement and sustainability.

Visa Sponsorship: Cox Automotive is unable to provide visa sponsorship now or in the future for this position, candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and 4 years' experience in a related field; or a different combination, such as a master's degree and 2 years' experience; a Ph.D. and 1 years' experience in a related field; or 12 years' experience in a related field with no degree.

  • Professional experience designing, building, and maintaining production software in a modern object-oriented language (e.g., C#, Java, Kotlin, Go, TypeScript, Python, C++).

  • Strong command of object-oriented design fundamentals - encapsulation, composition, interface design, SOLID, dependency injection, and common design patterns - with the judgment to know whennotto apply them.

  • Experience delivering software in a microservice or service-oriented architecture, including defining service boundaries, versioning APIs, and handling distributed failure modes (timeouts, retries, idempotency, partial failure).

  • Experience designing and consuming HTTP/REST APIs (or gRPC/GraphQL equivalents), including contract design, backward compatibility, and authentication/authorization patterns.

  • Proficiency with relational databases: schema design, indexing, query tuning, transactions, and managed schema migrations.

  • Experience with asynchronous and message-driven processing using queues, topics, or event streams.

  • Experience building and operating services in a public cloud environment, including containerized workloads.

  • Demonstrated automated testing discipline across unit, integration, and end-to-end layers, with work delivered through a CI/CD pipeline.

  • Proficiency with Git-based workflows and code review as a routine part of delivery - both giving and receiving substantive feedback.

  • Experience with production support and observability: structured logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and triaging live incidents.

  • Track record of senior-level ownership: taking ambiguous problems through design, implementation, and release; decomposing work for others; and raising engineering standards on a team.

  • Clear written and verbal communication with both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Experience working in an Agile or iterative delivery model.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with C# and .NET (modern .NET,ASP.NETCore, Entity Framework Core).

  • Front-end experience with React and TypeScript, including modern component patterns, state management, and component/E2E testing.

  • Production experience with PostgreSQL and/or MySQL.

  • Experience using Redis for caching, distributed locking, or rate limiting, including cache invalidation strategy.

  • AWS experience, particularly ECS/Fargate, RDS, SQS/SNS, S3, Lambda, CloudWatch, and IAM.

  • Infrastructure-as-code experience (Terraform, AWS CDK, or CloudFormation) and Docker.

  • Familiarity with distributed system patterns such as outbox, saga/compensating transactions, eventual consistency, and idempotent consumers.

  • Demonstrated performance and scalability work: profiling, query optimization, caching strategy, or load testing.

  • Experience with feature flags and progressive delivery (canary releases, dark launches, trunk-based development).

  • Familiarity with static analysis, code quality, and dependency/security scanning tooling (e.g., SonarQube, SAST, SCA).

  • Experience modernizing or retiring legacy systems, including incremental migration approaches such as strangler-fig.

  • Experience integrating third-party vendor APIs, including handling vendor migrations.

  • Multi-tenant SaaS experience, especially entitlements, tiered packaging, or role-based access control.

  • Domain experience in two-sided marketplaces, logistics, transportation, or automotive.

  • Experience with resiliency practices such as game days, chaos exercises, or documented runbooks.

  • Experience mentoring engineers or interns, and participating in hiring and interview loops.

  • Comfort with AI-assisted development tooling as part of a normal workflow.
