They collaborate with teams and clients using digital communication tools, allowing for flexible work arrangements. Remote Software Engineers require strong technical and communication skills, as well as the ability to manage their own schedules and work independently. This role is ideal for individuals who are self-motivated and comfortable working in a virtual setting.

What does a remote software engineer do?

As a remote software engineer, you work from home to create and develop systems using programming languages and frameworks. As part of your duties, you design and install software solutions by determining specifications and developing code. You also improve software initiatives by reviewing systems and recommending solutions, often virtually guiding clients through the database, network, and computer processes. By collecting and analyzing issues, you can develop solutions for a variety of technical problems. The remote aspect of this job means you can work from anywhere with a reliable internet connection.

Remote software engineers often encounter challenges such as communication barriers, time zone differences, and maintaining work-life balance. These can be effectively managed by utilizing collaboration tools (like Slack or Zoom), setting clear expectations with team members, and establishing a dedicated workspace. Regular check-ins, asynchronous updates, and proactive communication help ensure everyone stays aligned on project goals. Building strong relationships with colleagues through virtual meetings and team-building activities can also foster a supportive remote work environment.

Job description

WHO WE ARE

DebtBook is the financial platform powering treasury and capital markets across the public sector. State and local governments, public universities, health systems, and the bankers and advisors who serve them run trillions of dollars in debt, cash, and investments on DebtBook.

We've built the most sophisticated treasury platform in public finance - sitting at the intersection of treasury management and a $4 trillion fixed income market that's been waiting for modern infrastructure.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who can exist in a fullstack environment. You will need to balance working on projects with your team and working across teams to implement improvements platform wide. Engineers at DebtBook work on products in multiple stages of maturity: we are enhancing some products that have been in use for years, we are launching new products, and we have some products that are in a more greenfield state.

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to thrive within our Majestic Monolith of Ruby on Rails and React. You'll strike a balance between driving impactful team initiatives and collaborating across the organization to enhance our entire platform. At DebtBook, our engineers touch the full lifecycle of product maturity-from refining established systems to architecting brand-new, greenfield solutions. As a senior member of the team, you will act as a bridge between various practice areas, providing mentorship to colleagues while leading efforts in system design, solution shaping, and decomposing complex epics into actionable tasks.

HOW WE WORK
  • Our application is a Majestic Monolith built with Ruby on Rails, React, and PostgreSQL.  Our app is hosted in AWS, and we use GitLab for our CI/CD pipelines and deployments.  We use feature flags to allow us to continually integrate our code.
  • Our front-end is built with React, TypeScript, and MUI React.  We have an in-house library of accessible components documented in StoryBook.  These components are being used in new development, and we are in the process of updating existing pages to use them.
  • Our back-end is a Ruby on Rails JSON API that communicates with a React SPA (single page application).
  • All of our engineers work on the front-end, back-end and database.  We have some engineers who are much more experienced in one, but we can all do some work in any part of the stack.
  • We have a small dedicated infrastructure team, but our teams deploy and monitor their own code.
  • Engineers collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and industry specialists to understand problems and design solutions.  Engineers manage breaking down work into tickets and planning and managing projects.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Participate in all stages of the SDLC: solution shaping, system design, ticket writing/breakdown, write full-stack code, review code, perform deployments, participate in monitoring, and gather data for reporting.
  • Own the quality of your work.  Write tests and work with your team to ensure everything works before merging and releasing.
  • Work cross-functionally on your team to ensure work is scoped to deliver quickly and deliver the right functionality.
  • Work collaboratively with other cross functional product-focused teams.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
  • 4+ years of related professional experience
  • Experience with Ruby or React
  • Some familiarity with front-end and back-end web development
  • Ability to communicate complicated technical concepts well with teammates in all functions, including non-technical roles
WHY DEBTBOOK

DebtBook is a fast-growing company where we dream big, move fast, make an impact, and bring joy to everything we do. Our core values drive our success as an organization, and we are looking for talented teammates who share our passion for challenging the status quo, innovating in all we do, and wanting to make a difference.

When it comes to benefits and perks, we are committed to supporting our employees' well-being to make their lives better, both in and out of the office. We offer:

  • Location: Charlotte NC (Hybrid - Flexible)
  • Annual salary range is $125,000-160,000 based on experience
  • Up to 10% annual bonus
  • Equity (stock options) for all employees
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with 4% employer match
  • Flexible work schedules and generous leave policies
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Stipend for remote workers to set up their ideal work space
  • Annual Company Onsite

Interview Process

  • 30 min - Introduction Call
  • 60 min - Interview with Engineering Manager.  Behavioral + Technical (Video call)
    • Our technical assessment covers development using Rails, React, and SQL.
  • 2 hr - Onsite Interview with members from the Product, Design, and Engineering teams
    • This will be multiple panel interviews each containing 1-2 team members.
    • The engineering portion will include programming.
OUR "GOAT" VALUES

GROW Continuously

  • We believe in continuous improvement, never accepting the status quo as good enough, and iterating to move quickly without compromising on quality.
  • We are energized by the fast-paced rate of change that growth demands and see new challenges as opportunities for resilience and personal development.
  • We are driven by curiosity to think creatively, innovate, and experiment, and we humbly incorporate lessons learned from success and failure along the journey.

OWN Your Outcomes

  • We hold ourselves accountable for exceptional effort, execution, reliability, professionalism, and results that add tremendous value for customers.
  • We are all individual contributors, responsible for delivering value to our customers, team, and company with every action we take.
  • As managers, we lead by example in both what we do and how we do it, and stay personally familiar with the work as we coach our teams.
  • We follow through on our decisions and commitments with action.

ABOVE & Beyond

  • We create moments of magic, surprising and delighting our customers at every touchpoint.
  • We run towards problems and enthusiastically jump in to help colleagues however we can be valuable.
  • We take pride in proactively doing the extra little things that set us apart, even when no one is watching.

TEAM Over Ego

  • There is no task needed at DebtBook that is beneath any of us.
  • We work hard to be the teammate others want on their team.
  • We have the courage to have hard conversations and the grace to receive honest feedback in pursuit of excellence.
