Remote Software Engineer Manager information

What is a remote software engineer manager?

A Remote Software Engineer Manager is a technical leader who oversees a team of software engineers working from different locations rather than a centralized office. Their responsibilities include managing project timelines, mentoring developers, facilitating communication, and ensuring the successful delivery of software products. They use digital collaboration tools to coordinate their teams, set goals, and monitor progress. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to foster a positive, productive remote work environment.

What does a remote software engineer manager do?

Remote Software Engineer Managers utilize a mix of regular video meetings, asynchronous communication tools, and clear documentation to maintain team cohesion and productivity. They focus on setting clear expectations, providing timely feedback, and fostering a culture of trust and autonomy despite geographical distances. Additionally, they often implement structured onboarding processes and promote professional growth through virtual mentorship and training, ensuring remote engineers feel connected and supported.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software engineer manager?

To thrive as a Remote Software Engineer Manager, you need a strong background in software development, team leadership experience, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), version control systems (such as Git), and remote collaboration platforms (like Slack and Zoom) is essential. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to motivate and guide remote teams distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure effective project delivery, cohesive remote teamwork, and the ongoing professional growth of distributed engineering teams.

  • Design and implement modern Java services that connect our platform to integration partners,ย poweringย dynamicย andย user-friendly experiences.ย
  • Make high-level technical and architectural decisions to ensure our solutions are secure, reliable, and scalable as we grow.ย
  • Own features end-to-endย from technical design and implementation through testing, deployment, and production monitoring.ย
  • Make well-reasoned design decisions and tradeoffsย in your domain, authoring technical design documents, API documentation, and architectural proposals.ย
  • Develop testing suites and validation strategiesย including integration tests, to deliver complex outcomes while maintaining high software quality.ย
  • Mentor other engineersย through code reviews, pair programming, and design discussions to foster a culture of excellence and collaboration.ย
  • Expand and evolve our integration strategy, connecting third-party contractor networks, service providers, and our internal underwriting systems.ย

We're looking for someone who has:ย

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Scienceย or equivalent professional experience.ย
  • 5+ years of experience building and deploying software applications.ย
  • Strong experience with Java and modern Java tooling for backend development.ย

  • A proactive, curious mindset with a passion for building technology that makes a tangible difference.ย

Highly preferred candidates also have:ย

  • Experience working inย Insurtech or Fintech environments.ย
  • Experience with Temporal workflow orchestration.ย

Software at SageSure:ย

Originally founded as a software and analytics business, SageSure's proprietary technology has always been a key source of competitive advantage. We offer agents and policyholders best-in-class, modern capabilities to quote and bind insurance, service policies, and submit and track claims. We operate a microservices-based SaaS platform and conduct a substantial share of our business through our API. Our software product, engineering, and operations teams set the bar for talent in our industry. We work remotely from numerous states across the country and are always looking for exceptional individuals to join us.ย

We are continually innovating with modern tools and technologies, and we welcome new perspectives. An ideal candidate will have a passion for some of our key technologies and advocate pragmatic industry practices around availability, scalability, security, and automation. A cloud-based infrastructure, continuous integration and delivery, and a quality-first approach help us to better deliver software.
