What is a remote software developer intern?

A Remote Software Developer Intern is a student or recent graduate who works from a remote location, typically from home, to gain practical experience in software development. Interns in this role assist with coding, debugging, testing, and other software engineering tasks under the guidance of experienced developers. The remote aspect allows interns to collaborate with team members virtually, using online communication and project management tools. This position helps interns build technical skills, learn industry practices, and prepare for a career in software development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software developer intern?

To thrive as a Remote Software Developer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, familiarity with languages like Python, Java, or JavaScript, and current enrollment in or completion of a relevant degree program. Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git), collaborative platforms (like GitHub or GitLab), and project management tools such as Jira or Trello is typically expected. Self-motivation, strong communication, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and learning. These skills and qualities are important because they enable interns to contribute effectively from a distance, adapt quickly to team workflows, and maximize their learning and productivity.

How do remote software developer interns typically collaborate with full-time engineers and other team members?

As a Remote Software Developer Intern, collaboration with full-time engineers and other team members is usually facilitated through digital communication platforms like Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Zoom. Interns are often included in daily stand-up meetings, code reviews, and project planning sessions, which helps them stay connected with the team and understand project goals. Regular check-ins with mentors or supervisors are common, providing guidance, feedback, and opportunities for learning. While remote work can present challenges in building relationships, proactive communication and participation in virtual team activities help interns integrate smoothly and contribute effectively.

About Us
At Fullbay, our mission is simple — to create safer roads for our families and yours. As leaders in the heavy-duty repair industry, we power shops with technology that helps them run smarter and more efficiently. As an AI-First company, we invite artificial intelligence to eliminate friction, spark innovation, and drive efficiencies in every conversation — for our teams and our customers.

Position Overview

The Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) Intern at Fullbay assists in designing, developing, executing, and maintaining automated tests under the guidance of experienced SDETs and software engineers. Manual testing is performed as needed to investigate behavior, validate functionality, and support software delivery. This technical role provides hands-on experience with quality engineering, software testing, automation frameworks, APIs, and AI-assisted development and testing practices while contributing to reliable, high-performing applications.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist in designing, implementing, debugging, and maintaining automated tests for web, API, and mobile applications.
  • Review requirements, acceptance criteria, and technical designs to identify test scenarios, quality risks, and coverage gaps.
  • Collaborate with SDETs, developers, and Product team members to refine testing strategies and support development goals.
  • Execute automated tests and perform focused manual, exploratory, functional, regression, and integration testing as needed.
  • Test APIs and service integrations by validating requests, responses, authentication, error handling, and expected behavior.
  • Document and report software defects clearly, then work with development teams to reproduce issues and verify fixes.
  • Document test results, investigation notes, and the current state of assigned work items.
  • Use approved AI-assisted tools to support test planning, automation development, debugging, technical learning, and coverage analysis.
  • Review and validate AI-generated code or recommendations for correctness, security, maintainability, and alignment with team standards.
  • Participate in automation code reviews and learn maintainable, reliable, and reusable test-design practices.
  • Support automated test execution in CI/CD workflows and assist with investigating test or pipeline failures.
  • Support test environments, test data, configurations, and integration activities as needed.
  • Adhere to all confidentiality and compliance regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education & Work Experience:

  • Pursuing a B.S. in Computer Science or a related field. Previous experience in software development, including academic or project-based exposure to modern systems and programming languages, is preferred.

Key Skills and Qualifications:
