Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer information

What does a remote software defined radio engineer do?

A Remote Software Defined Radio (SDR) Engineer designs, develops, and maintains radio communication systems that are implemented through software rather than traditional hardware circuits. Working remotely, they use programming languages and signal processing techniques to create flexible and efficient radio solutions for applications such as telecommunications, defense, and research. Their responsibilities include developing algorithms, optimizing radio performance, troubleshooting signal issues, and collaborating with cross-functional teams, all while leveraging remote communication and development tools.

What is the difference between Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer vs RF Engineer?

AspectRemote Software Defined Radio EngineerRF Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, Communications, or related fields; experience with SDR platformsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, or related fields; certifications like FCC or RF-specific training
Work EnvironmentRemote or on-site, focused on software development and signal processingPrimarily on-site or lab-based, focused on hardware, testing, and RF system design
Industry UsageTelecommunications, defense, aerospace, software companiesWireless communications, broadcasting, defense, telecommunications

The Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer specializes in developing and implementing SDR systems through software, often working remotely. In contrast, the RF Engineer focuses on hardware design, testing, and deployment of RF systems. Both roles require technical expertise but differ mainly in their focus on software versus hardware components.

What are some typical challenges faced by remote software defined radio engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Software Defined Radio (SDR) Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex signal processing tasks, ensuring reliable communication across distributed teams, and staying updated with evolving SDR technologies. Working remotely may also require effective collaboration using digital tools and clear documentation to align with colleagues on system design and troubleshooting. To overcome these challenges, SDR Engineers benefit from proactive communication, regular code reviews, and ongoing professional development through webinars and technical forums.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software defined radio engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, digital signal processing, and RF communications, typically supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with SDR platforms (such as GNU Radio, USRP, or MATLAB), wireless protocols, and programming languages like Python or C++ is essential. Strong problem-solving, independent work ethic, and effective remote communication skills help set candidates apart. These abilities are crucial for designing, implementing, and troubleshooting complex radio systems in distributed and collaborative environments.

Job description

Company Description

WHO WE ARE

Velotic is a newly-formed independent software company with a pure-play focus on industrial operations. We unite two category-defining portfolios, ThingWorx and Kepware (formerly part of PTC) and Proficy (formerly part of GE Vernova), to transform industrial manufacturing, at scale. With $350M in annual revenue, a global footprint across a range of industries, a legacy customer base, and our intelligent data connectivity systems and AI solutions, we are one of the world's largest independent software companies focused on industrial operations, here to power the future of manufacturing.

OUR MISSION

Enabling the world's industrial producers to do the right things right across every shift, every plant, every day. We help manufacturers prosper by equipping them with software-defined, data-driven production systems that elevate quality, accelerate cycle times, improve resilience, and enable sustainable profit growth.

WHY THIS IS A ONCE-IN-A-CAREER OPPORTUNITY

Lead in a market undergoing significant disruption and growth from cloud migration to edge intelligence to AI-powered industrial automation.

Join a culture defined by ambition, authenticity, speed, teamwork, and the belief that manufacturing can meaningfully improve the world.

Competitive benefits, compensation and long-term impact on how the world's industrial companies operate, automate, and innovate.

Job Description

ROLE SUMMARY

We are hiring a Technical Fellow, Software to serve as a senior technical authority for the Kepware industrial connectivity platform. This individual contributor role is accountable for architectural integrity, technical direction, and the resolution of the most complex engineering challenges across Kepware core platform engineering.

The Technical Fellow partners with Engineering, Architecture, Product, and Quality to shape technology strategy, guide major design decisions, and raise engineering standards across distributed teams. This role is critical to delivering reliable, scalable industrial connectivity software at the center of the Velotic portfolio and will be responsible for setting technical direction for the Kepware platform and core connectivity stack, leading architecture for high-complexity initiatives, and mentoring senior engineers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

โ€ข Own technical vision and architecture: define and maintain architectural direction for the Kepware platform, ensuring design integrity across modules, releases, and integration points with adjacent Velotic products (ThingWorx, Proficy).

โ€ข Lead on the hardest problems: decompose complex requirements into implementable designs; evaluate tradeoffs; drive performance, scalability, security, and reliability improvements for mission-critical industrial connectivity software.

โ€ข Shape product and platform direction: partner with Product Management and Architecture to translate business goals into technical strategy; contribute to Kepware roadmaps, modernization efforts, and platform consolidation initiatives.

โ€ข Deliver through others: provide technical leadership on large initiatives without direct people-management responsibility; guide design and implementation across engineering teams, including distributed and consultant-augmented teams.

โ€ข Set the engineering standard: lead design and code reviews; model disciplined software development practices; define patterns, standards, and quality bars that other engineers follow.

โ€ข Mentor and elevate talent: coach senior and principal-level engineers on architecture, troubleshooting, and technical decision-making; share knowledge through documentation, colloquia, and technical forums.

โ€ข Represent Velotic technically: engage credibly with customers, support, services, and executive stakeholders on complex Kepware technical issues; communicate technology choices to technical and non-technical audiences.

โ€ข Evaluate and adopt technology: monitor industry trends (cloud, edge, AI-assisted development, industrial connectivity, OT/IT integration); assess emerging technologies and recommend adoption where they advance the Kepware platform strategy.

โ€ข Own technical accountability: take responsibility for the technical quality of what ships in owned areas, including maintainability, operability, and alignment with security and compliance requirements.

โ€ข Ensure compliance with company standards and policies.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

โ€ข Extensive experience as a senior software engineer, architect, or equivalent technical leader owning complex, production-grade software systems.

โ€ข Demonstrated expertise across the software development lifecycle, from requirements and design through implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance.

โ€ข Strong track record of architectural leadership on large-scale, multi-component products (client/server, distributed systems, or platform software).

โ€ข Deep hands-on engineering capability; able to engage credibly in design reviews, debugging, and performance analysis.

โ€ข Experience leading technical work across geographically distributed engineering teams.

โ€ข Experience influencing technical direction across teams or functions; recognized internally as a subject matter expert.

โ€ข Excellent communication skills; able to explain complex technical concepts to engineering peers, product stakeholders, and senior leadership.

โ€ข Demonstrated ability to operate with autonomy in ambiguous, high-stakes environments.
