What is a remote social media moderator?

A Remote Social Media Moderator is a professional responsible for monitoring, reviewing, and managing user-generated content on social media platforms from a remote location. Their primary duties include enforcing community guidelines, responding to comments or messages, and removing inappropriate or harmful content. They help maintain a safe and positive online environment for users while representing the brand or organization’s values. This role typically requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and an understanding of various social media platforms. Remote moderators often work flexible hours and may be employed by companies, agencies, or as freelancers.

How to become a remote social media moderator?

The qualifications that you need to start working as a work from home social media moderator include computer skills, an understanding of marketing principles, and knowledge of social media. Employers typically prefer applicants with a marketing or PR-related degree or equivalent experience in marketing, customer service, or social media management. Companies and clients often expect you to prove your social media skills by showing them your personal social media accounts, so you need to make sure you maintain a professional online presence. You can gain experience by volunteering to act as an unpaid moderator on social media platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote social media moderator?

To thrive as a Remote Social Media Moderator, you need strong written communication skills, attention to detail, and a good understanding of social media platforms, often supported by prior moderation experience or related training. Familiarity with content management systems, moderation tools, and analytics dashboards is typically required. Excellent judgment, emotional resilience, and the ability to remain calm and objective under pressure are standout soft skills. These abilities are essential for maintaining a safe and engaging online community while upholding platform guidelines and brand reputation.

What are some common challenges faced by remote social media moderators and how can they be managed?

Remote Social Media Moderators often encounter challenges such as handling high volumes of user-generated content, managing exposure to sensitive or distressing material, and maintaining consistency in enforcing community guidelines. To manage these, moderators typically rely on well-defined moderation policies, regular team check-ins, and access to mental health resources. Collaboration with other moderators and supervisors is essential for sharing best practices and ensuring decisions align with company standards. Effective time management and regular breaks can also help maintain productivity and well-being.

Job description

The Shipyard is a leading, independent marketing and communication agency headquartered in Columbus, OH and San Diego, CA that brings together talented individuals across the creative, communications, media and digital landscape. Uniquely designed to Engineer Brand Love through a unifying approach of paid, owned and earned channels, we work together to grow brands that audiences can't help but love.

Our family of brands, Fahlgren Mortine, TURNER and TinyWins, span integrated communications, travel and lifestyle, and digital innovation, giving us the range and depth to deliver for clients locally, regionally and nationally.

Momentum is nothing without the people driving it. See who we are at https://theshipyard.com/culture before you hit apply!

SUMMARY

We're looking for an experienced Social Media Specialist with a strong foundation in social, influencer and digital programs to help bring integrated campaigns to life for our clients.

This is an ideal role for a marketer who's equal parts strategist, project manager and team player. You'll keep programs moving and connect the dots across integrated teams, partnering with cross-functional colleagues to handle the details without losing sight of the bigger picture.

This is a hybrid work from home/office position (in-office attendance is required on Tuesdays & Thursdays) and the candidate must live near Columbus, OH, Cleveland, OH, Dayton, OH, Denver, CO, New York, NY, or San Diego, CA.

At The Shipyard, we know that it's your unique talents, backgrounds, and perspectives that make you who you are, just like our team, who come from various career paths and experiences. We believe we can't be truly diverse without bringing your most authentic self to the agency.

Studies show that people from marginalized communities may not always apply for positions if they don't meet every single requirement in a job posting. At The Shipyard, we encourage you to apply even if you don't meet all the requirements. We believe that your passion for what we stand for - our values and purpose - is just as important as meeting every checkbox.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Support the development and execution of social media and influencer strategies and campaigns for clients
  • Oversee community management to ensure client channels are active, responsive and running smoothly
  • Manage UGC programs, including creator coordination, budgets, timelines and deliverables
  • Support client relationships through day-to-day communication, calls, status updates and follow-through
  • Conduct audience research, social listening and monitoring to identify insights and opportunities
  • Identify real-time cultural and social opportunities that can help clients show up in relevant and meaningful ways
  • Build agendas, calendars, meeting notes, reports and other materials that keep clients and teams aligned

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • 3+ years of experience managing social media, influencer or digital programs; agency experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of social media strategy and creative best practices across platforms including Meta, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn and X
  • Experience working with influencers, creators, UGC and/or affiliate programs
  • Ability to interpret social and influencer metrics and turn data into clear, actionable insights
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize across multiple clients, programs and competing deadlines
  • Confidence working with clients, internal teams and external agency partners
  • Familiarity with social media, influencer management and analytics tools such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Sprinklr, Meltwater

WHAT YOU'LL GET

  • The opportunity to work across social, influencer, PR and digital, rather than operating in a silo
  • Exposure to a diverse portfolio of lifestyle and consumer brands and the chance to work on programs that move at the speed of culture
  • A collaborative team environment where ideas, curiosity and proactive thinking are valued
  • The opportunity to build meaningful client relationships and grow into a stronger strategist and account leader
  • Hands-on experience across influencer marketing, UGC, paid social, affiliate, community management and emerging digital platforms
  • A role where you can bring ideas to the table, test new approaches and help shape how clients show up in culture
  • The overall target range of base compensation for this role is $60,000 - $67,000. Compensation offered will be determined by additional factors such as location and experience.
  • Open PTO
  • Flexible work hours and remote work
  • Paid holidays + holiday closure between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day
  • Company-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life insurance and disability benefits
  • 401k program with employer matching
  • 6 weeks paid parental leave
  • Employee bonus referrals
  • Company-provided snacks and beverages (yes, beer/wine included)
  • ... and lots more!

Requirements

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for visa sponsorship
