What is a remote ship surveyor?

Remote Ship Surveyors are professionals who inspect and assess the condition and safety of ships using digital technologies, such as video streaming, drones, or remote sensors, instead of being physically present on the vessel. They provide guidance, evaluations, and certifications required for regulatory compliance and safe vessel operations. By leveraging remote tools, these surveyors can conduct inspections efficiently, often reducing costs and minimizing disruptions to ship schedules. Their work is essential for ensuring that maritime standards are met, even when physical access to ships is challenging.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote ship surveyor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Ship Surveyor, you need a strong background in marine engineering or naval architecture, along with relevant certifications such as those from classification societies (e.g., IACS) and knowledge of international maritime regulations. Familiarity with remote inspection technologies, digital reporting tools, and specialized survey software is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help ensure accurate assessments and clear client interactions. These skills are crucial for maintaining vessel safety, compliance, and client trust in a remote, technology-driven inspection environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote ship surveyors, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote ship surveyors often encounter challenges such as limited access to on-site inspection tools, time zone differences with clients or crews, and the need to rely on high-quality digital documentation. To manage these effectively, surveyors must be proficient with virtual inspection technologies, maintain clear communication with ship operators, and ensure thorough documentation and follow-up. Proactive planning, strong organizational skills, and adaptability are key to overcoming these hurdles and delivering accurate, reliable survey results.

Job description

Hello, we're Instrumentl.
We're a mission-driven startup helping the nonprofit sector to drive impact, and we're well on our way to becoming the #1 most-loved grant discovery and management tool. To help us get there, we're hiring a remote Sales Development Representative to represent Instrumentl to prospective clients.
About us:
Instrumentl is a hyper-growth YC-backed startup with over 4,500 nonprofit clients, from local homeless shelters to larger organizations like the San Diego Zoo and the University of Alaska. We are building the future of fundraising automation, helping nonprofits to discover, track, and manage grants efficiently through our SaaS platform.
Our charts are dramatically up-and-to-the-right - we're cash flow positive and growing quickly, with customers who love us (NPS is 65+ and Ellis PMF survey is 60+). Join us on this rocket ship!
About the role:
In this role, you'll be helping organizations big and small get access to more resources so they can grow their impact.
Over the past year, we've seen great results reaching out to universities and non-profits to let them know about Instrumentl, and now we are growing a dedicated team to scale this effort. We are looking for someone who loves the idea of spending all day on the phone with non-profits and universities.
But, we're not just looking for a typical sales rep. We are looking for someone who wants to build a sales career and do good at the same time.
This role is perfect for a sales professional early on in their career, or someone looking to career switch into sales, that wants to help some of the best organizations in the world.
The Instrumentl team is fully distributed.
Get to know us at instrumentl.com/about!
In this role, you should expect to:
  • Research organizations that would be a good fit for Instrumentl
  • Make over 400 dials per week to engage prospects and book demos with the team
  • Track and document account and decision-maker details in our CRM so that we can close
  • Learn how our value proposition applies to different types of organizations, so that you can engage in quality conversation on the phone
  • Spend 10% of your time collaborating with other departments and/or working on experiments that we think have the potential to be a force multiplier

An excellent hire will:
  • Book 10+ demos for the team every week through top of funnel outreach (we have people doing more than 10/week today)
  • Win over organizations with fast follow through, strong attention to detail, and palpable customer empathy
  • Communicate insights and blockers from conversations to help inform how to make our pitch better

About You:
  • A recent graduate or early in your career
  • Ability to thrive working in a remote sales environment
  • Interested in sales, startups, or customer-facing roles
  • Comfortable talking to new people and building relationships
  • You welcome feedback, champion new ideas, and encourage others to do likewise
  • You're curious and are constantly 'getting to the bottom of things'
  • You don't mind rolling up your sleeves and doing hard work
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills

Bonus (not required):
  • Internship or leadership experience

Compensation & benefits:
  • OTE $60,000-$75,000
  • 100% covered health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (50% for dependents)
  • Generous PTO policy, including parental leave
  • 401(k)
  • Company laptop + stipend to set up your home workstation
  • Company retreats for in-person time with your colleagues
  • Work with awesome nonprofits around the US. We partner with incredible organizations doing meaningful work, and you get to help power their success.

What to expect:
Instrumentl is evolving rapidly. You'll always have new challenges and opportunities to grow in your role here - you won't be bored! You'll be an early member of our small but mighty team, playing a huge part in shaping our culture for the years and teammates to come.
At Instrumentl:
- We're customer-focused. We routinely seek feedback from our customers to improve the Instrumentl experience for everyone. Our first company value is "The customer is the hero" and we mean it.
- We love to experiment. Our team is constantly generating new concepts and iterating to see what works - ideation and experimentation are essential here. "Bend the curve" is another key company value.
- We're approachable and collaborative. Everyone has a voice, and we're all building Instrumentl together.
- We kick it every day with some of the nicest people in the world. No joke, our customers are often on the front lines educating kids, saving endangered species, and restoring watersheds. In helping them take advantage of Instrumentl's technology, you're helping them move the world forward.
