Job Summary
A leading engineering organization is seeking an experienced Fire Protection Engineer to support Department of Defense (DoD) and healthcare infrastructure projects. This fully remote position is open to candidates nationwide and requires approximately 30% travel to customer sites. The ideal candidate will have strong experience designing, evaluating, and commissioning fire protection systems, with the ability to support complex facility projects while ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and government requirements.
Responsibilities
- Design and review fire protection systems, including fire detection, alarms, notification systems, and suppression systems.
- Develop schematic designs, design development documents, construction documents, specifications, hydraulic calculations, material lists, and fabrication details.
- Provide technical leadership and engineering support for fire protection infrastructure projects.
- Evaluate existing fire protection systems, building conditions, maintenance practices, and operational procedures.
- Perform fire protection, code compliance, and life safety evaluations.
- Ensure designs meet applicable state, local, federal, DoD, DHA, Joint Commission, and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements.
- Support project managers with technical guidance for facility modifications and infrastructure projects.
- Review project requirements, develop technical solutions, and provide recommendations based on compliance, effectiveness, and lifecycle costs.
- Respond to technical Requests for Information (RFIs) using applicable codes, regulations, and policies.
- Perform field inspections, testing, commissioning, and verification of fire protection systems.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, travel reports, and recommendations for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Travel to customer locations to conduct site assessments, inspections, and project support activities.
Qualifications
Required
- Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in fire protection design, construction, major repair, or management of mechanical infrastructure systems.
- Recent experience with direct responsibility for engineering design, construction execution, repairs, or infrastructure management.
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Ability to obtain a security clearance.
- Ability to travel approximately 6–12 times per year.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting DoD, Department of Defense Health Agency (DHA), or government facilities.
- Strong knowledge of NFPA standards, building codes, fire protection criteria, and life safety requirements.
- Experience with CAD/BIM software and engineering documentation.
- Ability to analyze plans, specifications, operational data, and maintenance practices.
- Experience developing cost estimates and recommendations for infrastructure improvements.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to present technical information clearly.
