Remote Senior Data Scientist information

What is a remote senior data scientist?

A Remote Senior Data Scientist is an experienced professional who analyzes and interprets complex data to help organizations make data-driven decisions, while working from a location outside the traditional office setting. They typically lead projects, design data models, and develop machine learning algorithms, often collaborating with cross-functional teams virtually. Their role requires advanced statistical, programming, and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and manage tasks remotely. Senior Data Scientists also mentor junior team members and contribute to strategic decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote senior data scientist?

To thrive as a Remote Senior Data Scientist, you need advanced expertise in statistics, machine learning, programming (Python, R), and a strong background in mathematics or related fields, usually supported by a master's or PhD. Experience with tools like TensorFlow, PyTorch, SQL, cloud platforms (AWS, GCP), and relevant data science certifications is highly valuable. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help you stand out, especially when collaborating remotely with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure you can independently drive impactful data-driven solutions and effectively communicate insights in a distributed work environment.

How do remote senior data scientists typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful results?

Remote Senior Data Scientists frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams by leveraging digital communication tools such as Slack, Zoom, and shared project management platforms. They work closely with product managers, engineers, and business analysts to define project goals, share data insights, and iterate on models. Regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and asynchronous updates are key to ensuring alignment and effective teamwork. This collaborative approach helps bridge the gap between data-driven insights and business objectives, making the role both challenging and rewarding.

Job description

About the Role:

Wing is looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join our Business and Product Analytics & Data Science team. This role is based in Palo Alto, CA or remotely in the US.

The ideal candidate is solution-oriented, a self-starter, and thrives in ambiguity, using advanced analytics and modeling to turn complex business questions into clear, decision-focused problems. They analyze complex datasets, design and train robust predictive models, and conduct rigorous statistical analysis to evaluate tradeoffs, quantify impact, and guide strategic choices. They communicate insights through actionable recommendations, enabling leadership to make confident, data-informed decisions.

What You'll Do:

  • Execute deep-dive research and advanced analytics on complex datasets to uncover hidden patterns, interpret trends, and synthesize strategic business insights.
  • Develop robust measurement and evaluation frameworks to define new metrics and ensure product features and operational changes meet strict standards for quality and performance.
  • Design, train, and deploy advanced machine learning and predictive models to evaluate complex tradeoffs, forecast trends, and quantify business impact.
  • Conduct rigorous statistical analysis, causal inference, and A/B testing to mathematically validate hypotheses, facilitate product deployment readiness, and measure ongoing business performance.
  • Translate the outputs of complex statistical models into clear, data-driven conclusions and communicate actionable recommendations to non-technical senior stakeholders.
  • Establish yourself as a point-of-contact for significant project areas, scoping technical priorities, innovating on statistical methods, and partnering closely with cross-functional leadership to solve ambiguous business problems.
  • Strategize, develop, and scale custom algorithms, automated workflows, and advanced analytical frameworks to operationalize predictive insights and empower self-serve decision-making.

What You'll Need:

  • 8+ years in data science, advanced analytics, product data science, or strategic quantitative roles.
  • Degree in a highly quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, etc.).
  • Strong coding proficiency and demonstrated knowledge of data analysis libraries and packages (explicitly Python and SQL; R is also beneficial).
  • Expertise using advanced statistical methods in an applied setting, with a strong foundation in experimental design, causal inference, and rigorous A/B testing.
  • Familiarity with ML systems and models (e.g., predictive modeling, forecasting) and how to evaluate their performance at scale.
  • A demonstrated track record of independently driving data science projects from raw data to actionable predictive solutions, delivering measurable business value.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to explain complex mathematical concepts and present analytical findings effectively to product and business leadership.
  • Demonstrated ownership mindset with the ability to influence technical decisions, prioritize high-impact workstreams, and collaborate with leadership across multiple functions.
