Summary
This position is part of the Haskell Indian Nations University, Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), Department of the Interior (DOI). As a Security Guard you will be responsible for performing security guard duties on the HINU campus.

As a Security Guard, GS-0085-5, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:
  • Perform foot and vehicle patrol, inspections, monitoring security of an area, entrance, or building.
  • Coordinate information and responses to ensure consistency and conformance with program policies.
  • Explain or provide guidance on laws, regulations, policies, standards, or procedures to management, personnel, or clients.
  • Respond to emergencies and provides first aid if necessary.
  • Complete forms, documents, or routine reports.

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • As a condition of employment, you will be required to serve a 2-year trial or 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
  • If you are a male applicant born after 12/31/1959, you are required to register under the Military Selective Service Act and the Defense Authorization Act of 1986, in order to be eligible for appointment to this agency.
  • Driving Requirement (Required only at time of appointment): Incumbent may be required, as an incidental duty, to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle, in the performance of duties, therefore, a valid driver's license is required.
  • Required to obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain first aid certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED).
  • This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) that requires pre-employment drug testing and is subject to random testing thereafter.

Qualifications
Individual Occupational Requirements: Applicants must meet the qualification requirements contained in the OPM Standards. For this position, they are listed below and can be found here: OPM Operating Manual, General Qualification Standards for Security Guard Series, GS-0085.
Medical Requirements: The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice. Applicants and employees must have the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position without risk to themselves or others. In most instances, a specific medical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify an applicant or employee. A medical condition or impairment is disqualifying only if the condition, for good medical reason, precludes assignment to or warrants restriction from the duties of the specific position. For some positions, the loss or impairment of a specific function may be compensated for by the satisfactory use of a prosthesis or mechanical aid. Reasonable accommodation shall also be considered in determining an applicant's ability to perform the duties of a position.
In addition to meeting the Individual Occupational Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications requirements below.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
GS-5 Grade Level: Your resume must demonstrate at least 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level that includes: work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis.
All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
Education
This position does not have a positive education requirement at this grade level. Therefore, no transcripts are required.
Additional information
Initial appointments to the competitive or excepted service: The probationary or trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider:
  • Your performance and conduct;
  • The needs and interests of the agency;
