What are some unique challenges faced by Remote RPG Programmers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Remote RPG Programmers often work with designers, artists, and other developers who may be located in different time zones, which can make real-time communication and collaboration challenging. Effective use of project management tools, clear documentation, and regular virtual meetings are essential to ensure everyone stays aligned on game features and technical requirements. Additionally, maintaining code consistency and integrating various modules smoothly require strong version control practices. Being proactive in communication and adaptable to different workflows helps overcome these challenges and ensures successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote RPG Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote RPG Programmer, you need strong proficiency in RPG (Report Program Generator) language, experience with IBM i (AS/400) systems, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or programming. Familiarity with tools like IBM Rational Developer, CL programming, and database management systems such as DB2 is typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving ability, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills, especially for remote work environments. These competencies ensure efficient development, maintenance, and troubleshooting of business-critical applications while enabling collaboration and independence in a distributed team.

What are Remote RPG Programmers?

Remote RPG Programmers are software developers who specialize in using the RPG (Report Program Generator) programming language, typically for IBM i (AS/400) systems, and perform their work from a remote location rather than an onsite office. Their responsibilities often include developing, maintaining, and enhancing business applications, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with teams via digital communication tools. Working remotely allows these professionals to serve clients or employers worldwide, providing flexibility while leveraging their expertise in legacy and modern RPG codebases.

What Does a Remote RPG Programmer Do?

A remote RPG programmer works in software development, creating new applications or tools using the report program generator language, which was originally designed for the IBM minicomputer system on the AS/400 and i-Series of computers. RPG is one of the most frequently used programming languages, and significant amounts of business enterprise, infrastructure operations, and other essential system controls use it. As a remote RPG programmer, you work from home as part of a larger team of developers, building web and windows applications. Your duties and responsibilities include scripting tests, checking code, and building out programs.

GitKraken Software Engineer: The AI Problem Solver

The Company

GitKraken is the developer experience (DevEx) platform of choice for more than 40 million developers and 100,000 organizations globally. Combining built-in AI and powerful workflow orchestration, GitKraken empowers development teams to eliminate unnecessary toil, streamline collaboration, and accelerate productivity. GitKraken's seamless integrations with leading Git providers, issue tracking tools, and AI solutions make it the most versatile DevEx platform available across desktop, command line, IDE, web, and mobile environments. Discover smarter, faster development at www.gitkraken.com or follow us on LinkedIn.

The Role

The Vibe (The Role & Mindset)

  • You're an AI Product Engineer: Your main mission is to figure out how developers actually use AI and ship features that solve their real problems not just build cool tech.
  • Move Fast and Ship Smart: This is a 0-to-1 environment. You need to quickly adopt new AI tools (LLMs, frameworks) and turn ambiguous ideas into reliable, intelligent product features.
  • AI as a Teammate: You're building the next generation of GitKraken by making it feel like an ultra-smart AI coding partner, using agentic workflows toautomate the tedious stuff (eliminate "toil").
  • The Best Part? You use the tools you build every day, so you get instant feedback on your problem-solving.

Don't Self-Filter: We care about diversity and encourage everyone to applyif you're close, send it! We are committed to having an inclusive and authentic work environment where unique perspectives, skills, and backgrounds are celebrated. We work hard to foster diversity in our workplace and encourage people from all backgrounds to apply. Even if you don't meet 100% of the requirements, don't let self-filtering and imposter syndrome get in the way of a great fit. We would love to hear from you!

What You'll Do

  • Design the AI Experience: Build and ship frontend features that integrate large language models (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) and agentic frameworks. The UI/UX needs to make complex AI interactions feel simple and trustworthy.
  • Translate Chaos into Code: Take vague product needs and turn them into clear, actionable technical plans. This means asking the right questions early to unblock the path forward.
  • Own the Frontend: Write super clean, high-performance TypeScript and React code. The codebase is huge, so readability and maintainability are key to shipping fast.
  • Bridge the Gap: Work with backend teams to define and design the necessary APIs that power your smart, agentic workflows.
  • Be the Quality Gate: Participate heavily in technical design, code reviews, and manual testing to ensure we're shipping high-quality, bug-free products every time.

What You'll Bring

  • Frontend Powerhouse: Strong skills in TypeScript and React are a must.
  • AI Fluent: You must be great at Prompt Engineering and have experience building/refining multi-step agentic workflows (making the AI do more than one thing at a time).
  • Know the Tools: You need familiarity with LLM APIs and have a deep understanding of AI-assisted dev toolsyou know their strengths, weaknesses, and how they fail in real life.
  • CS Fundamentals: A solid foundation in algorithms, data structures, and design patterns is essential for tackling complex product problems.
  • AI orchestrator: You're a collaborator who ensures your AI solutions actually meet user needs and product goals.
  • Stay Sharp: A commitment to keeping up with the very latest in generative AI tech.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with building desktop apps (cross-platform).
  • Prior work on developer tools, IDE extensions, or other productivity apps.
  • Proof of your craft: open-source contributions or a killer personal project portfolio.

How You'll Be Rewarded

  • Excellence Competitive compensation with annual performance-based pay increases
  • Balance Flexible Paid-Time-Off Policy & paid company holidays (chosen by our employees)
  • Parent life Generous paid parental leave
  • Pets Pet insurance plan (with no exclusions)
  • Health Health, dental, and vision insurance with competitive employer cost-sharing
  • Headquarters Modern, fully equipped offices designed to maximize productivity in a hybrid environment
  • Culture Great Place to Work Certified
  • Growth Paid career development opportunities, audiobook subscriptions, and mentorship
  • Future 401(k) retirement plan plus company matching
  • Travel Company paid domestic trip after your 1-year anniversary & an international trip every 5 years

Location

This is a hybrid position based in Scottsdale, AZ. This role combines the flexibility of remote work with the benefits of meaningful in-person collaboration. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the Phoenix area.
