What Does a Remote RPG Programmer Do?

A remote RPG programmer works in software development, creating new applications or tools using the report program generator language, which was originally designed for the IBM minicomputer system on the AS/400 and i-Series of computers. RPG is one of the most frequently used programming languages, and significant amounts of business enterprise, infrastructure operations, and other essential system controls use it. As a remote RPG programmer, you work from home as part of a larger team of developers, building web and windows applications. Your duties and responsibilities include scripting tests, checking code, and building out programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote RPG Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote RPG Programmer, you need strong proficiency in RPG (Report Program Generator) language, experience with IBM i (AS/400) systems, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or programming. Familiarity with tools like IBM Rational Developer, CL programming, and database management systems such as DB2 is typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving ability, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills, especially for remote work environments. These competencies ensure efficient development, maintenance, and troubleshooting of business-critical applications while enabling collaboration and independence in a distributed team.

What are some unique challenges faced by Remote RPG Programmers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Remote RPG Programmers often work with designers, artists, and other developers who may be located in different time zones, which can make real-time communication and collaboration challenging. Effective use of project management tools, clear documentation, and regular virtual meetings are essential to ensure everyone stays aligned on game features and technical requirements. Additionally, maintaining code consistency and integrating various modules smoothly require strong version control practices. Being proactive in communication and adaptable to different workflows helps overcome these challenges and ensures successful project delivery.

What are Remote RPG Programmers?

Remote RPG Programmers are software developers who specialize in using the RPG (Report Program Generator) programming language, typically for IBM i (AS/400) systems, and perform their work from a remote location rather than an onsite office. Their responsibilities often include developing, maintaining, and enhancing business applications, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with teams via digital communication tools. Working remotely allows these professionals to serve clients or employers worldwide, providing flexibility while leveraging their expertise in legacy and modern RPG codebases.

Job description

The worldโ€™s largest organizations rely on Evident to help them protect their business and brand from third-party risk. Our game-changing technology - which enables the secure exchange of risk data like proof of insurance, identity, business registration, and other information - helps our customers verify that their partners have all of the required credentials to do business.

In todayโ€™s new remote-first, ever-changing regulatory environment, our secure, privacy-first enterprise platform, accessible via web portal or API, provides a highly scalable and configurable solution to manage communications, storage, decisioning, and ongoing monitoring of credentials.

Evident is a VC-backed technology startup, headquartered in Atlanta, GA. Learn more at evidentid.com.

This is a role for an engineer who's hungry โ€” someone who's built enough to know what they don't yet know, and is ready to close that gap fast.

At Evident, you'll work alongside some of the sharpest engineers in the risk management space, on problems that actually matter, with the latest technology. You'll ship real product, develop instincts that take most engineers a decade to build, and do it inside a team that treats AI-native development not as a buzzword, but as a genuine competitive edge.

If you're earlier in your career and looking for an environment that will push you further than any other role you're considering โ€” this is that place.

The role will be based in our office in Atlanta (hybrid work model with two days in the office and three days remote).

What You'll Work On
  • AI-native development โ€” for real
  • Use AI coding assistants, LLM-powered workflows, and automation as a core part of how you work every day โ€” and keep sharpening that edge as the tools evolve.
  • Apply AI across the full development cycle: writing and refactoring code, generating tests, drafting specs, accelerating debugging. The goal is always to do better work, faster.
  • This is one of the most exciting skillsets you can build right now, and you'll have both the mandate and the support to develop it deeply.
ย
  • Shipping product that matters
  • Design, build, and deploy features across our Java and Python stack โ€” end-to-end ownership from implementation through deployment and observability.
  • Work in a codebase where your contributions are visible and your impact is measurable.
  • Solve problems at the intersection of identity, trust, and compliance โ€” a domain where the technical and real-world stakes are both high.
ย
  • Growing through the work
  • Write well-tested, production-grade code and learn what "quality at scale" actually looks like in practice.
  • Participate in design discussions, code reviews, and architecture conversations โ€” not as a passive observer, but as someone whose perspective is wanted.
  • Pair with senior engineers who are invested in your growth and will push you to level up.
What We're Looking For

Must-Have

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience with real production exposure.
  • Solid foundation in Java and/or Python โ€” you understand the language well enough to be honest about where your gaps are.
  • Curiosity about and some hands-on experience with AI development tools (Copilot, Cursor, Claude, or similar) โ€” even if you're still building the habit, you're genuinely interested in going deeper.
  • A growth mindset: you take feedback well, ask good questions, and don't need everything figured out before you start.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication โ€” the team is distributed and async clarity matters.

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to LLM-based features in production (prompt design, retrieval, evaluation, fallbacks).
  • Familiarity with cloud-native infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure), microservices, or API design.
  • Experience in startup or fast-moving product environments.
  • Interest in identity, privacy, or compliance domains.
  • Experience with Scala
What You'll Get Out of This
  • Accelerated growth.ย You'll be surrounded by engineers who've already navigated the hard problems you're working toward โ€” and they're the kind of people who share what they know.
  • Real ownership. No ticket factories. You'll have genuine influence over what gets built and how.
  • A skill set that's genuinely rare. Deep AI-native development experience, in a production environment, is one of the most valuable things you can develop right now. We'll help you build it.
  • A problem worth caring about. Identity verification sits at the center of trust on the internet โ€” the work has weight.
Competitive compensation, benefits, and remote flexibility within Poland.
Why Evident?
โ€ข Our team solves a crucial problem with huge business potential together, and we are able to see exactly how our contribution affects customers!
โ€ข Competitive pay package, including base pay and stock options
โ€ข Full medical, dental, vision benefits and 401K
โ€ข Unlimited PTO
โ€ข Paid parental leave to support you and your family
โ€ข Home internet stipend, virtual events, & more!
โ€ข Recently named one of Atlanta's Coolest Companies & 50 on Fire by Atlanta Inno
โ€ข Recently named one of the Top 10 Fastest Growing Companies in Atlanta & one of the Best Places to Work in Atlanta by Atlanta Business Chronicle
