Job description

About the Company

General Matter enriches uranium.

We are designing, building, and operating the world's lowest-cost enrichment services, here in the US. ย

In the process, we are restoring America's ability to produce nuclear fuel to power AI, advanced manufacturing and critical industries our country relies on to remain competitive.ย

Fuel drives the cost of advanced reactor electricity production, and enrichment drives the cost of the fuel that advanced reactors consume. ย Reliable, low-cost enrichment is the catalyst for the nuclear Renaissance now under way.

Our mission is to make nuclear not only the cleanest and safest source of baseload power, but also the most affordable. ย We believe abundant nuclear energy will lead to a post-scarcity society.ย

We were incubated inside Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by over a dozen of the world's top venture capital firms. ย

Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.ย

We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency.ย

Help us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable.ย

Compliance Attorney

As the first compliance-focused attorney at the company, you will collaborate with the General Counsel to help design and build the legal compliance function.ย  This is a significant role with high autonomy, responsibility, and opportunities to collaborate with business and technical leads to enhance the compliance posture within their organizations.ย  This is a rare chance to help architect the compliance and regulatory foundation of a next-generation nuclear company from the ground up.ย  The ideal candidate combines deep regulatory judgment with a builder mentality and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving, engineering-driven environment.ย  You will work directly with executive leadership on some of the company's most sensitive regulatory, national security, and operational matters.ย  Hiring for this role will prioritize action-oriented attorneys who can facilitate business growth while minimizing risk in a pragmatic, adaptable fashion.ย  Tactical judgment, interpersonal skills, and substantive expertise are all critical to success in this role.

The role may be structured as a deputy or associate general counsel position depending on candidate seniority.

Responsibilities

  • Working cross-functionally to mitigate compliance risk across the organization while facilitating business objectives and reducing compliance friction
  • Advising on export-control compliance programs, including ITAR, EAR, and DOE Part 810
  • Designing and managing classified data and industrial security practices
  • Supporting FOCI mitigation and classified information handling requirements
  • Developing and implementing enterprise-wide compliance policies, controls, training, and audit mechanisms
  • Managing internal investigations, incident response, and regulatory reporting obligations
  • Supporting compliance aspects of strategic transactions, partnerships, and government engagements

Basic Qualifications

  • J.D. degree.
  • 8+ years of legal experience (including clerkships).
  • Substantial experience with export controls, classification, nuclear compliance, or national security matters.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience in the nuclear, national security, or similarly highly regulated industry.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and maintaining compliance policies, procedures, training programs, and monitoring frameworks.
  • Prior experience conducting internal investigations, compliance reviews, or risk assessments.
  • Ability to translate complex legal and regulatory requirements into practical business guidance.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with sound attention to detail.

Additional Requirements

  • Willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
  • This position is based in Los Angeles, CA and requires being onsite full-time - hybrid and remote work will not be considered.

Equal Opportunity Employer

General Matter is an Equal Opportunity Employer; employment with General Matter is governed on the basis of merit, competence and qualifications and will not be influenced in any manner by race, color, religion, gender, national origin/ethnicity, veteran status, disability status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, mental or physical disability or any other legally protected status.

Compensation and Benefits

The base salary range for this role is $150,000-$230,000 annually.

Compensation bands are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual level and base pay is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, and internal equity. Please note that the stated salary range is an estimate and may be adjusted based on market conditions, business needs, or other factors. In addition to base salary, for full-time hires, you may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of stock options, and access to medical, vision & dental coverage as well as access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
