What is a remote robotics job?

A Remote Robotics job involves designing, programming, monitoring, or maintaining robotic systems from a remote location. This can include teleoperating robots, developing automation software, or troubleshooting robotic hardware via cloud-based platforms. Remote robotics professionals work in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, aerospace, and logistics. These roles often require expertise in robotics engineering, programming, and network communications. Advances in AI and IoT have made remote robotics more accessible and crucial for automation and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the remote robotics position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Remote Robotics, you need a strong foundation in robotics engineering, computer programming (especially Python, C++, or ROS), and experience with remote system monitoring and troubleshooting. Familiarity with teleoperation platforms, cloud-based control systems, and remote diagnostics tools is essential, with relevant certifications such as CSWA or ROS Developer often preferred. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating across distributed teams. These skills ensure you can efficiently design, monitor, and maintain robotic systems from a distance while collaborating with colleagues and clients in dynamic environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in remote robotics roles?

One of the most common challenges in Remote Robotics is troubleshooting hardware and software issues without direct, on-site access, which requires strong analytical and remote diagnostic skills. Professionals in this field often navigate time zone differences and coordinate closely with local technical staff or end users to resolve issues quickly. Effective communication and clear documentation become critical to ensure remote instructions are followed accurately. Additionally, staying up-to-date with evolving technologies and security protocols is essential for maintaining optimal system performance and data safety.

Job description

About the Role

At Uber, we're building a future where autonomous vehicles and human drivers seamlessly work together to make transportation more reliable, affordable, sustainable, and safer. Our vision is one of a hybrid future, with AVs operating alongside drivers and couriers, each bringing their unique capabilities to the table. As the largest on-demand mobility and delivery platform in the world, with our deep expertise in marketplace management, fleet utilization, and local operations - Uber is uniquely positioned to help AV companies deploy and scale their technology globally.

As the Senior Product Manager for Autonomous Delivery Experiences, you will sit at the forefront of human machine interaction. You will be responsible for defining and delivering the end-to-end consumer journey for how consumers order and receive autonomous deliveries from sidewalk robots, on-road autonomous vehicles, and aerial drones.

You will turn a high-tech logistical interaction into an intuitive, delightful, and trustworthy experience. You will solve novel UX challenges, including how Merchants and Eaters smoothly rendezvous with AVs to load and receive their orders.

What the Candidate Will Do

  1. Deeply Understand Users: dive deep into user archetypes and how they interact with autonomous delivery form factors
  2. Define the Product Vision: Own the product roadmap for the Eater-facing autonomous delivery lifecycle, including discovery, education, tracking, and the physical handoff
  3. Build Trust Through UX: Design intuitive experiences that meld robotic capabilities with Eater expectations
  4. Handle the Unexpected: Architect resilient "unhappy paths" and recovery flows which ensure that, when something goes wrong, consumers have a path to make things right.
  5. Cross-Functional Leadership: Serve as the connector between the Engineering, Design, Operations, and external AV Partner teams.

Basic Qualifications

  1. Minimum 6+ years of product management experience, with a track record of shipping consumer-facing mobile products.
  2. Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  3. User-Centricity: Deep empathy for the user and experience working closely with Product Designers to solve complex UI/UX interactions.
  4. Technical Fluency: Ability to discuss API constraints, hardware-software integration, and latency issues with engineering teams and external Partners. You don't need to be a roboticist, but you must be able to speak their language.
  5. Strategic Execution: Proven ability to break down ambiguous problems into actionable milestones and ship them while working with numerous cross-functional teams.
  6. Data-Driven: Experience using data to drive product prioritization, setting success metrics, and iterating based on results.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Prior experience in robotics or autonomous vehicles
  2. Strong understanding of multi-sided marketplaces
  3. Ability to iterate quickly, test hypotheses, be incorrect, and adapt based on results
  4. A strong consumer intuition where your best guess proves to be correct much more often than not
