What is remote risk adjustment coding?

Remote risk adjustment coding is the process of reviewing and assigning medical codes to patient diagnoses and procedures from a remote location, usually at home. The purpose is to ensure that healthcare organizations accurately report the health status of their patients, which affects reimbursement from health plans. Coders use specialized knowledge of ICD-10-CM coding and risk adjustment models, such as HCC (Hierarchical Condition Category) coding, to capture all relevant chronic conditions. This position requires attention to detail, compliance with regulations, and strong analytical skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote risk adjustment coder?

To thrive as a Remote Risk Adjustment Coder, you need a solid understanding of medical coding, anatomy, and healthcare regulations, typically backed by a coding certification such as CPC, CRC, or CCS. Familiarity with coding software, electronic health record (EHR) systems, and risk adjustment models like HCC is essential. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and strong written communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting clinical documentation and ensuring coding accuracy. These skills and qualifications are vital to accurately capture patient risk, ensure compliance, and optimize reimbursement for healthcare organizations.

How does working remotely as a risk adjustment coder impact collaboration with healthcare teams and ongoing professional development?

As a remote Risk Adjustment Coder, you'll often collaborate with clinical staff, auditors, and other coders through secure digital platforms and regular virtual meetings. While remote work offers flexibility, it also means that proactive communication is essential to ensure accurate coding and compliance with regulations. Many organizations provide virtual training sessions, access to coding forums, and ongoing education to help you stay updated on industry changes and coding standards. Building relationships with your team and participating in online professional communities can further support your growth and help overcome the isolation that sometimes comes with remote work.

About the Role: The Delivery Tech Lead (DTL) is the senior technical leader of an engagement, typically owning a single workstream end to end. You'll coordinate directly with the customer's technical leadership, develop the technical strategy for the engagement, and ensure the team delivers on both technical and business outcomes. Working in partnership with the Engagement Manager and the customer, you'll help shape an achievable project plan, confirm workstreams are adequately staffed, and mentor consultants toward project milestones.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership & Strategy
Own the technical strategy for the engagement workstream and drive it to a documented, agreed target state.
Coordinate with the customer's technical leadership on architecture, sequencing, and risk; drive discussions to an outcome rather than leaving them open.
Recommend best-fit approaches prescriptively and with conviction, backed by delivery experience - and say so clearly when the customer's preferred path is the wrong one.
Review designs, code, and IaC personally; set the engineering standard by example.
Make and document consequential architecture decisions, including trade-offs considered and those deliberately deferred.
Delivery & Team Leadership :
Partner with the Engagement Manager and customer to develop an achievable project plan with realistic milestones and dependencies.
Confirm the workstream is adequately staffed with the right skill mix; escalate gaps early.
Mentor consultants - raise technical depth, delivery discipline, and customer-facing skill across the team.
Own quality and completion of the engagement: track milestone delivery, unblock the team, and lead remediation when a workstream needs stabilization.
Coordinate technical execution alongside partner consultants and other vendor teams in an Agile delivery model.
Contribute to utilization of AWS and partner resources, and to the development and refinement of new delivery offerings.
Foundational Architecture :
Design and deploy AWS foundational environments using Control Tower and Landing Zone Accelerator (LZA).
Define and implement multi-account strategy - AWS Organizations, OU structure, account vending, SCPs, and centralized logging and security tooling.
Implement IAM and Identity Center, guardrails, and security baselines across the account structure.
Migration Execution :
Lead discovery and assessment of on-premises estates - application dependency mapping, right-sizing analysis, and migration wave planning.
Determine and drive the appropriate migration strategy per workload - rehost (lift-and-shift) and replatform - balancing speed, risk, and long-term operating cost.
Oversee lift-and-shift replication of on-premises and VMware-based virtual machines into EC2, including image conversion and OS/driver remediation.
Direct replatforming onto managed AWS services - self-managed databases to RDS, load balancers to ALB/NLB, static content delivery to CloudFront.
Own hybrid connectivity design - Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Transit Gateway, DNS, and Active Directory integration.
Oversee storage and database migrations (DMS, DataSync, Storage Gateway, Snow Family) and validate data integrity.
Set standards for IaC (Terraform, AWS CDK), pipeline automation, and operational readiness before workloads reach production.
Produce well-structured design documents, migration runbooks, diagrams, decision records, and hand-over guides.
Qualifications :
10+ years designing and operating infrastructure, including 3+ years leading a technical workstream on customer-facing engagements.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or similar.
Demonstrated hands-on AWS depth - you have personally built production systems, not solely managed teams that built them.
Experience setting technical strategy for an engagement and coordinating with customer technical leadership.
Hands-on experience building AWS foundational environments - Control Tower, Landing Zone Accelerator, AWS Organizations, and multi-account architecture.
Demonstrated experience with cloud migrations; large-scale, multi-wave migrations a strong plus.
Practical experience executing rehost and replatform migrations, and the judgment to recommend the right approach per workload.
Experience or strong working knowledge of AWS Transform for VMware is a significant plus.
Hands-on experience with AWS Migration Hub, AWS Application Migration Service (MGN), and VM Import/Export.
Strong AWS networking fundamentals - VPC design, routing, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect/VPN, and DNS.
Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) - Terraform and AWS CDK - and at least one scripting language (Python, Bash, or PowerShell).
Current ability to review code and IaC, not just architecture diagrams.
AWS certification required; AWS Solutions Architect - Professional or DevOps Engineer - Professional preferred.
AWS Foundational & Migration Tools (Nice to have)
Foundation
AWS Control Tower - Automated landing zone setup and account governance.
Landing Zone Accelerator (LZA) - Deployable foundational architecture for regulated and complex environments.
AWS Organizations / Identity Center - Multi-account structure, OUs, SCPs, and centralized identity.
Migration
AWS Transform - Agentic AI-driven acceleration of VMware migration workflows.
AWS Migration Hub - Centralized tracking of migration progress.
AWS Application Migration Service (MGN) - Lift-and-shift replication of VMs to EC2.
VM Import/Export - Converting VM images.
AWS Application Discovery Service - Inventory and dependency mapping of source environments.
AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) - Homogeneous and heterogeneous database migration.
AWS DataSync / Storage Gateway / Snow Family - Bulk and hybrid data transfer.
