What is a Remote RF Design Engineer?

A Remote RF Design Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing and optimizing radio frequency (RF) systems and components, such as antennas, transmitters, and receivers, while working remotely from a location outside of a traditional office or lab. These engineers use specialized software and tools to model, simulate, and test RF circuits and systems for applications like wireless communications, broadcasting, and radar. Their responsibilities often include collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, troubleshooting RF issues, and ensuring compliance with industry standards—all while leveraging online communication platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote RF Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote RF Design Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, RF circuit theory, and practical experience in wireless communication systems, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with design tools such as HFSS, ADS, CST, and experience with simulation and measurement equipment are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are crucial for collaborating remotely and addressing complex design challenges. These skills ensure the development of reliable, high-performance RF solutions and facilitate effective teamwork in distributed engineering environments.

What is the difference between Remote Rf Design Engineer vs Remote Wireless Systems Engineer?

AspectRemote Rf Design EngineerRemote Wireless Systems Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, RF certificationsBachelor's in Electrical/Communications Engineering, RF certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, remote collaboration, project-basedSystem integration, network testing, remote teams
Industry UsageTelecom, wireless device manufacturingWireless network providers, telecom infrastructure

The Remote Rf Design Engineer primarily focuses on designing RF components and circuits, while the Remote Wireless Systems Engineer works on integrating and optimizing entire wireless systems. Both roles require RF knowledge and often overlap in industry applications, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote RF Design Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote RF Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited access to on-site testing facilities, reliance on virtual collaboration tools, and managing communication across distributed teams. To address these, it's important to establish clear communication protocols, leverage simulation software for remote testing, and schedule regular check-ins with other engineering team members. Additionally, proactively sharing design updates and documentation helps ensure alignment and smooth project progression.

Job description

Company Overview

We are an agile steel manufacturing and engineering consulting firm specializing in custom transmission line structures and comprehensive design services. We bridge the gap between heavy manufacturing and high-end engineering, delivering optimized, constructible solutions for utility and renewable energy developer clients nationwide. By combining structural fabrication expertise with full-service line design, we provide our clients with uniquely efficient, turnkey engineering solutions.
Position Summary

We are seeking a Remote Senior Transmission Line Engineer to lead overhead transmission line design projects from concept through structural fabrication and construction. In this role, you will act as the primary technical interface for our utility and developer clients, transforming line routing constraints into fully optimized structural and line designs. Since we manufacture what we design, you will collaborate directly with our fabrication team to ensure seamless project execution.
Core Responsibilities
  • Line Design & Modeling: Lead high-voltage overhead transmission line routing, design, and structural spotting using PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER.
  • Structural Engineering: Perform conductor sag/tension analysis, structure loading calculations, clearance checks, and foundation design (e.g., drilled shafts, direct embed) for custom steel structures.
  • Client & Project Leadership: Act as the technical lead on projects, managing client relationships, reviewing project scopes, and ensuring deliverables meet utility-specific standards.
  • Manufacturing Collaboration: Work closely with our internal steel fabrication team to optimize pole, tower, and hardware designs for manufacturability and cost efficiency.
  • Quality Assurance & Stamping: Perform rigorous technical reviews of design packages, drawings, and calculations. Apply your PE stamp to final engineering deliverables.
  • Mentorship: Provide technical guidance, training, and quality reviews for junior and mid-level design engineers.
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license is strictly required (ability to obtain comity/reciprocity in multiple states is highly preferred).
  • Experience: 7+ years of dedicated overhead transmission line design experience (69 kV to 345 kV+), preferably within a consulting or utility environment.
  • Software Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER. Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation is preferred.
  • Standards Expertise: Deep understanding of industry codes including NESC, ASCE 74, ASCE 48 (steel pole design), IEEE, and AISC.
  • Remote Capability: Proven capability to work productively in a fully remote environment, with excellent written and verbal communication skills for client-facing meetings.
What We Offer
  • 100% Remote Flexibility: Work from anywhere in the U.S. with a structured remote onboarding program.
  • Diverse Project Portfolio: Direct exposure to both traditional utility infrastructure upgrades and fast-paced renewable energy developer tie-ins.
  • Tight-Knit Culture: The impact and agility of a small consulting firm backed by the stability of our own manufacturing facility.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Competitive base salary, performance bonuses, health/dental/vision insurance, 401(k) matching, and PE license renewal/continuing education support.
