Overview
Leads the strategic development of student employment as a high-impact educational practice. Reimagines student employment as a meaningful learning experience that integrates professional skill development, mentorship, and career readiness competencies into on-campus work. Works closely with the Student Employment Program Manager and collaborates with key stakeholders such as Financial Aid, Human Resources, and the Career Exploration team to design, assess, and sustain a student employment program that aligns with institutional learning goals and enhances student success.
About the Department: Career Exploration seeks to empower and guide students and alumni by providing comprehensive career advising and opportunities to connect within and beyond the Macalester community. We are dedicated to ensuring equitable access to resources and experiential learning for skill-building and self-discovery. We believe in continuous learning and support a self-driven approach towards finding purpose and fulfillment.
This is a hybrid position, 3 days a week in the office with the option to work 2 days a week from home. The daily work hours are 8:00 am-4:30 pm Monday through Friday.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
Responsibilities:
Program Management and Strategy:
  • Leads the transformation of student employment into a high-impact educational practice including learning outcomes aligned with the institutional mission.
  • Establishes program goals and creates tools to assess student learning and program effectiveness, working closely with campus partners to foster a culture of feedback, reflection, and professional development, while also providing training to supervisors to strengthen the evaluation process.
  • Reviews and revises existing job descriptions to incorporate learning goals and skill development opportunities, and collaborate with supervisors to incorporate NACE career competencies into job descriptions.
  • Partners with the Student Employment Program Manager, academic departments, Career Exploration, Student Affairs, Financial Aid, and Human Resources to align student employment with institutional strategic plans and initiatives.
  • Ensures compliance with federal and state laws and institutional student employment regulations and policies.
  • Collaborates on cross-functional initiatives and projects related to student employment, workforce planning, operational efficiency, and administrative processes.
  • Ensures equitable access to on-campus employment opportunities and champion inclusive supervision practices across all campus departments.

Student and Staff Professional Development and Programming:
  • Designs and delivers training for student employees focused on professional skills and helps students develop and translate key skills from their student employment experiences to life beyond Macalester.
  • Develops and facilitates training for staff and faculty supervisors on providing effective mentorship, supervision, and skill development.
  • Establishes a network or roundtable series for faculty and staff supervisors to share best practices in mentorship and student management.
  • Creates resources for supervisors (workshops, toolkits, etc.) for ongoing learning and training

Communication and Data:
  • Maintains student employment web content, documentation, communications, and related educational materials for students and departments.
  • Analyzes student employment data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for process improvement, and prepare reports/recommendations for operational enhancements to improve consistency, compliance, and efficiency.
  • Maintains accurate records and documentation related to student employment.

Performs other duties as assigned including:
  • Participates as an active member of the team
  • Participates in department and college activities and supports implementation of shared goals and initiatives
  • Provides backup support to other members of the team

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of relevant experience, or a master's degree and 1-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in student employment, experiential learning, career development, workforce development, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver training or educational programs.
  • Strong project management, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively, manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with technology and software used to manage programs, systems, and processes, including Handshake and Google Workspace.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree
  • Experience designing, launching, and sustaining a new program, particularly in a higher education setting.
  • Experience evaluating programs using qualitative and quantitative data to inform improvements and decision-making

Compensation:
$62,135.00-$64,959.00 Annually
