Job description

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE:

Performs a wide variety of planning, maintenance, design engineering, project management and construction, and operations activities related to routine, non-routine, and emergency restoration duties. Project areas may include grid/system design, operations and maintenance, planning, asset management, reliability, computer applications, safety, and root cause failure analysis.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support and participate in project scoping activities for substation projects. Review existing relay settings. Coordinate with design and construction organizations to develop project scope and estimate sheets.
  • Support project schedules and processes by using activity tracking applications such as Primavera.
  • Model power systems using CAPE. Maintain master model for relay fault analysis. Support wide area coordination. Occasionally use additional tools such as ETAP, EMTP and Hypersim.
  • Develop relay settings for substation protective relays. This includes performing fault studies and developing relay settings for transmission protection equipment related to capital projects and asset maintenance projects.
  • Works with field groups, distribution engineers and plant engineers to ensure coordination of downstream distribution devices for the system.
  • Oversee, review, and approve settings developed by professional consultant engineers. This includes awarding projects to contractors and reviewing invoices.
  • Lead activities pertaining to SERC/NERC standards compliance and other utility relations as required. 
  • Establish and improve relay testing laboratory. Develop and support relay test plans for planned projects.
  • Support development of Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) configurations.
  • Participate in substation visits. Provide technical support and protection system expertise in response to operational/commissioning requests from field personnel.
  • Manage documentation via Documentum (WebTop and IPS-TRAMS) for transmission system protection and other records according to company and departmental policies.
  • Assist with storm/emergency restoration efforts as necessary.
  • Support protection standard development and implementation as required.
  • Investigate impact of relay firmware and software changes to Entergy system applications. Develop and update templates as appropriate.
  • Update group databases such as power line carrier frequency database and transmission line rating database.
  • Access new technologies. Lead better application development geared toward fault studies and relay settings.
  • Lead and participate in Entergy continuous improvement projects.
  • Lead and develop less experienced personnel. Develop departmental guidelines/tools and provide training as needed.
  • Research and implement smartgrid in Entergy system.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Discipline (typically Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, and Industrial) from a four-year accredited institution
  • Degrees in Engineering Technology (typically, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, and Industrial) from a four-year accredited institution with PE may be considered
  • Preferred: Electrical or Computer Engineering Degree

Minimum Experience:

  • Engineer I: 0 - 2 years of related experience
  • Engineer II: at least 2 - 4 years of related experience
  • Engineer III: at least 4 - 6 years of related experience
  • Engineer Sr.: at least 6 years of related experience

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering principles
  • Thorough understanding of procedures, programs, and standards in responsible area
  • Consistently demonstrates good engineering judgment
  • Good leadership skills
  • Good interpersonal skills along with strong written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent project management skills
