Summary
About the Position: Serves as Medical Technician at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia

Duties
Help
  • Receive patient's specimens of blood, urine, stool, microbiological and viral cultures, tissue, body fluids and cytological specimens.
  • Check that all specimens are properly and completely labeled.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiologic properties are maintained.
  • Ensure timely distribution to laboratory sections of all specimens received.
  • Perform and calculate manual cell counts and properly identifies abnormal and normal blood cell populations.
  • Collect, test, and process donated blood into treatment specific components.
  • Perform, evaluate and monitor the performance of routine and specialized test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols.
  • Prepare standards, controls, solutions, and reagents required for testing.
  • Perform primary review of patient results.
  • Identify unusual and/or discrepant values and initiates appropriate follow-up procedures to verify results.
  • Verify correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks.
  • Managing inventory priorities and prepare inventory reports
  • Training new staff and draft/review SOPs

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Health care workers will be offered the Hepatitis B vaccine or immunity testing, and if declined, will be required to sign a Hepatitis B declination form.
  • Tuberculosis (TB): This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment Drug Testing and random testing thereafter.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 40 pounds is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • This position may have a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement.
  • Position is designated as Mission Essential. The incumbent will be required to report to work during times of contingency operations, natural disasters, extreme weather or other emergency situations.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: performing testing procedures in a clinical laboratory; calibrating or maintaining clinical laboratory instruments; preparing samples for testing; documenting results through clinical laboratory automated systems.. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-[insert 05 or above]).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience aloneno substitution of education for experience is permitted.
