QA/UAT Engineer

Nylas

Job description

The Company
At Nylas, we specialize in making it easier for developers to add email, calendar, and contact management features into their applications. We provide APIs, which streamline the integration of these functionalities, ensuring they are secure and effective. This enables better, safer, and more reliable communication within apps.
Supporting over 100,000 developers and collaborating with more than 900 companies globally, Nylas plays a pivotal role in how digital communication tools are built and utilized. Our technology spans various sectors, from healthcare to education, simplifying the complex process of app development related to communications. By reducing the barriers in communication technology, we empower developers to innovate and enhance user interaction across platforms.
About the Team
At Nylas, we're building the infrastructure that powers modern communications. Our APIs and platform help thousands of developers integrate email, calendar, scheduling, and contacts into their applications without having to manage the complexity underneath.
As our platform grows, so does the importance of quality. We're evolving our quality engineering practice beyond the traditional SDET model and rethinking how testing fits into a modern engineering organization. We believe quality is a shared responsibility, and we're investing in automation, AI-assisted workflows, and deeper collaboration between engineering and product teams to help us ship with confidence.
Our goal isn't simply to automate more tests. It's to build a modern, AI-native quality engineering practice that enables teams to move faster while maintaining a high bar for reliability, usability, and engineering excellence.
About the Role
We're looking for a QA/UAT Engineer who enjoys balancing automation with hands-on product validation.
This role sits at the intersection of automated testing, exploratory testing, browser automation, API validation, release readiness, and AI-assisted quality engineering. You'll work across our API platform (Go/gRPC services for email, calendar, contacts, and scheduling) as well as our customer-facing experiences, helping ensure changes ship with confidence. You'll partner closely with backend, frontend, platform, and product teams throughout the development lifecycle to build quality into the process from the start rather than bolting it on at the end.
Why This Role Is Different
This isn't a pure automation seat or a pure manual QA seat.
You'll move between writing automated tests, validating real customer workflows, automating browser interactions, investigating production issues, and pioneering how AI can augment software quality. You'll have the opportunity to influence not just what gets tested, but how quality engineering evolves at Nylas as we build an increasingly AI-native engineering organization.
If you enjoy owning quality end-to-end and want to help build an AI-native quality practice rather than inherit a fixed process, this role is for you.
About You
This role is ideal for someone early in their career who is eager to grow into a Quality Engineer or Software Engineer. We're looking for a curious, AI-savvy builder who enjoys learning new technologies, has a strong engineering mindset, and is excited to combine automation, hands-on testing, and AI-assisted workflows to help shape the future of quality engineering. Previous QA, SDET, or test automation experience is a plus, but a passion for learning and a desire to build great software matter most.
What You'll Do
  • Build and maintain automated test coverage. Design, implement, and own automated test suites across our API platform and customer-facing applications, including integration, functional, contract, and end-to-end testing.
  • Validate APIs and services. Develop and maintain test coverage for REST and gRPC services, ensuring reliability across email, calendar, contacts, scheduling, and third-party provider integrations.
  • Perform user acceptance and exploratory testing. Validate real-world customer workflows before release, uncovering usability issues, edge cases, and regressions that automated tests may miss.
  • Automate browser-based workflows. Build and maintain end-to-end UI tests for our dashboard, scheduling products, and embedded experiences using frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium.
  • Leverage AI to improve quality engineering. Use tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and other AI-powered testing workflows to generate test cases, explore application behavior, accelerate defect discovery, triage flaky tests, improve testing efficiency, and help define how AI fits into our quality engineering practice.
  • Integrate quality into the development lifecycle. Embed testing into CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows so quality gates provide fast, actionable feedback on every change.
  • Investigate and triage defects. Reproduce issues, identify root causes, collaborate with engineers to drive resolution, and maintain clear documentation throughout the defect lifecycle.
  • Support release readiness. Participate in release validation efforts, helping ensure new features and platform changes meet quality standards before reaching customers.
  • Collaborate across engineering teams. Work closely with backend, frontend, platform, and product teams throughout the development lifecycle to build quality into the process from the start.
  • Help shape the future of quality engineering. Contribute to testing strategy, tooling decisions, AI-assisted testing workflows, and best practices as we continue evolving our approach to automation, quality ownership, and AI-native quality engineering.
What We're Looking For
  • 2+ years of experience in software engineering, QA, SDET, Quality Engineering, or test automation-focused software engineering roles (including internships).
  • Experience designing and maintaining automated testing frameworks and suites.
  • Proficient in Go (Golang), Python, or Javascript, including the ability to read service code, understand application behavior, write tests, and debug failures.
  • Experience testing APIs, microservices, or distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with REST APIs, gRPC, contract testing, and API validation tools such as Postman, grpcurl, k6, or similar.
  • Hands-on experience with browser automation frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development or testing tools, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or similar coding agents.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD systems and modern cloud-native development environments.
  • Experience working with Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, kubectl, and GitOps-style deployment workflows.
  • Strong understanding of software testing principles, including test strategy, test planning, risk-based testing, and defect management.
  • Excellent written communication skills with strong attention to detail.
Nice to Have
  • Experience applying AI and LLM technologies to software testing workflows.
  • Proficiency with TypeScript or Python for automation and tooling.
  • Experience testing third-party integrations, OAuth flows, or identity systems.
  • Familiarity with observability platforms, including logs, metrics, and distributed tracing.
  • Experience with performance, load, or reliability testing.
  • Experience working with developer platforms, APIs, infrastructure products, or highly technical SaaS environments.
Interview Process (subject to changes)
  • Round 1 - The Intro: 30 minute discussion with the Hiring Manager
  • Round 2 - The Deep Dive: 60 minute live technical assessment
  • Round 3- The Loop: A series of 45-minute chats with the team (max 3 hours) where we look for the "what, why, and how" behind your best work.

During the various discussions, candidates selected to meet with us are strongly encouraged to not only discuss their knowledge, skills, experience, and abilities but also to showcase examples of their current or previous work. We expect you to clearly outline the "what," "why," and "how" behind your contributions.
Actual compensation will be determined based on individual qualifications, which are objectively assessed during the interview process. Factors influencing salary include knowledge, skills, experience, and abilities.
