Remote Quality Engineer Medical Device information

What does a remote quality engineer in the medical device industry do?

A Remote Quality Engineer in the medical device industry is responsible for ensuring that medical products meet regulatory and quality standards while working from a remote location. Their duties often include reviewing and improving quality processes, conducting audits, analyzing data to identify trends or issues, and ensuring compliance with regulations such as FDA or ISO 13485. They collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve quality issues and may also be involved in risk management and validation activities. Remote Quality Engineers use digital tools to communicate and manage documentation, making it possible to fulfill their role away from a traditional office or manufacturing environment.

How does a remote quality engineer in the medical device industry effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams despite working off-site?

Remote Quality Engineers in the medical device sector regularly use digital collaboration tools such as video conferencing, shared documentation platforms, and cloud-based quality management systems to stay connected with design, manufacturing, and regulatory teams. While working remotely poses challenges in terms of immediate access to physical devices and face-to-face communication, frequent virtual meetings and clear documentation help ensure alignment on project goals and compliance requirements. Building strong relationships with on-site team members and proactively seeking feedback are key strategies for maintaining effective collaboration and ensuring product quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote quality engineer in medical devices, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Quality Engineer in Medical Devices, you need a solid background in quality assurance, regulatory compliance (such as FDA and ISO 13485), and engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with quality management systems (QMS), document control software, and risk assessment tools is common, and certifications like ASQ CQE are highly valued. Strong attention to detail, effective problem-solving, and clear remote communication skills help ensure compliance and collaboration across distributed teams. These abilities are crucial for maintaining product safety, meeting regulatory standards, and driving continuous improvement in a regulated industry.

You will help us understand how reviewers work, translate their needs into clear requirements, validate features from a domain perspective, and lead client demonstrations and user acceptance. This role is responsible for ensuring that alerts, evidence, and workflows provide genuine value without creating unnecessary reviewer burden or presenting automated findings as regulatory conclusions

  • Build strong working relationships with client reviewers and establish a regular, structured feedback process.
  • Lead discovery and validation sessions using prototypes and working software.
  • Translate reviewer needs into workflows, business rules, user stories, and measurable acceptance criteria.
  • Validate proposed requirements and workflows before development begins.
  • Partner with the Senior Product Manager to ensure requirements are accurate from a medical-device review perspective.
  • Define meaningful alert categories, priorities, reviewer actions, and escalation paths.
  • Evaluate alert relevance, false positives, false negatives, evidence quality, usability, and reviewer effort.
  • Test completed capabilities from a reviewer's perspective and identify missing requirements, confusing behavior, unsupported conclusions, and workflow gaps.
  • Lead client demonstrations, user acceptance testing, feedback capture, and acceptance or signoff.
  • Maintain traceability from the original client's needs through requirements, validation, and approval.
  • Improve domain understanding across product, engineering, data science, and leadership teams.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience as a medical-device reviewer with experience in medical-device regulatory review, regulatory affairs, quality assurance, clinical review, or related regulated-document field.
  • Strong understanding of medical-device submission documentation and review processes.
  • Experience gathering requirements and working directly with clients, reviewers, or other domain stakeholders.
  • Ability to translate complex domain needs into clear, testable product requirements.
  • Experience conducting user acceptance testing or structured software validation.
  • Ability to identify missing evidence, unsupported conclusions, workflow gaps, and unintended consequences.
  • Strong analytical, facilitation, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Credibility and confidence when working with client domain experts.
  • Comfort collaborating with product managers, engineers, data scientists, and UX teams.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and have lived in the US for 3 or more consecutive years.
  • Must be able and willing to obtain a Public Trust Clearance
