Job description

Remote, Nationwide - Seeking Intern - Software Engineer Backend

Everybody Has A Role To Play In Transforming Healthcare

At Vituity you are part of a larger team that is driven by our purpose to improve lives. We are dedicated to transforming healthcare through our culture by working together to tackle healthcare's most pressing challenges from the inside.

Join the Vituity Team. At Vituity we've cultivated an environment where passion thrives, and success comes through shared purpose. We were founded in a culture that values team accomplishments more than individual achievements, an approach we call "culture of brilliance." Together, we leverage our strengths and experiences to make a positive impact in our local communities. We foster this through shared goals and helping our colleagues succeed, and we also understand the importance of recognition, taking the time to show appreciation and gratitude for a job well done.

Vituity Locations: Vituity has opportunities at 890 practices across the country, serving 14.5 million patients a year. With Vituity, if you ever need to move, you can take your job with you.

The Opportunity

  • Design and build backend services, APIs, and orchestration layers powering agentic AI features in Python.
  • Develop, integrate, and harden LLM-based agents, tools, and multi-step workflows.
  • Own a scoped, business-critical project from design through delivery, with weekly mentor and program-lead check-ins.
  • Participate actively in code reviews, design discussions, and sprint cycles alongside the engineering team.
  • Write tests and contribute to documentation for the services and components they own.
  • Collaborate with frontend, data, and product partners to ship work end-to-end.

Required Experience and Competencies

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field at the rising-senior through in-progress master's level. Recent graduates within the last 6-12 months may also qualify.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Python with the ability to write, debug, and reason about non-trivial code independently required.
  • Candidates should expect to demonstrate fluency through live coding and code-review discussion; submissions that rely on AI-generated code without underlying comprehension will not meet the bar.
  • Solid grounding in API design, data structures, and core backend architecture concepts required.
  • Working familiarity with Git and command-line development environments required.
  • Working knowledge of, or hands-on exposure to, LLM-based agents, tools, or AI-driven application workflows required.
  • Experience with Rust through coursework, production work, or substantive personal projects preferred.
  • A public portfolio (GitHub, personal site, or deployed projects) demonstrating backend or AI-related work preferred.
  • Prior internship, open-source contribution, or substantive personal project work in backend engineering or AI/LLM tooling.
Coursework or project experience involving agentic systems, distributed systems, or LLM application development preferred.
  • 1-2 years of relevant work, club, or volunteer experience in software engineering preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly in technical contexts.
  • Ability to operate independently between weekly check-ins, surfacing blockers proactively rather than waiting to be asked.
  • Comfort working in production codebases with established conventions, code review processes, and engineering standards.
  • Genuine intellectual curiosity around AI, agentic systems, and emerging engineering patterns.
  • Attention to detail in code quality, testing, and incorporation of review feedback.
  • Ability to balance multiple workstreams and meet committed deadlines.
  • Demonstrated self-learner with interest in continued professional development and personal growth.

The Community

Even when you are working remotely, you are an important part of the Vituity Community. We offer plenty of opportunities to engage with other Vitans through a variety of virtual meet-and-greets, events and seminars.

  • Monthly wellness events and programs such as yoga, HIIT classes, and more
  • Trainings to help support and advance your professional growth
  • Team building activities such as virtual scavenger hunts and holiday celebrations
  • Flexible work hours
  • Opportunities to attend Vituity community events including LGBTQ+ History, Dia de los Muertos Celebration, Money Management/Money Relationship, and more
