What is a remote Python developer apprenticeship?

A Remote Python Developer Apprenticeship is a structured training program where aspiring Python developers work remotely while learning on the job. Apprentices typically gain hands-on experience by working on real-world projects under the guidance of experienced mentors. The apprenticeship is designed to help individuals develop their coding skills, understand software development workflows, and prepare for full-time developer roles. This pathway is ideal for those who want to learn Python development while enjoying the flexibility of remote work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Python developer apprentice?

To thrive as a Remote Python Developer Apprentice, you need a solid understanding of Python programming, basic knowledge of software development principles, and a relevant educational background or bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control (such as Git), code editors (like VS Code), and issue tracking systems (e.g., Jira) is typically required. Strong problem-solving ability, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills help apprentices stand out. These skills and qualities are vital for successfully learning, collaborating, and contributing in a distributed, fast-paced development environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Python developer apprentices and how can they be overcome?

Remote Python developer apprentices often encounter challenges such as limited face-to-face mentorship, managing time effectively, and staying motivated without in-person supervision. To overcome these, it's important to proactively communicate with mentors and peers through regular virtual meetings and collaborative platforms. Setting clear daily or weekly goals, maintaining a structured routine, and participating in online coding communities can also help apprentices stay engaged and on track with their learning and project responsibilities.

Job description

Job Description
The Python Software Foundation (PSF) is the US nonprofit behind Python, the open source  programming language. The PSF currently has an opening for a full-time, fully remote (US-based) role focused on the systems and processes that allow our sponsorship program to succeed and keeping them humming. The role also involves managing regular professional communication with our sponsors, prospects, and other relationships. Charitable corporate sponsorships are the core source of the PSF’s revenue, and ensuring smooth tracking, prospecting, and relationship management for sponsorships is crucial to the organization as a whole. In this role, you will work closely with the Deputy Executive Director, who has been executing this work to date. You will also collaborate closely with the Programs Director and Community Events Coordinator who together run PyCon US, as much of the PSF’s sponsorship work relates to PyCon US.

This role is a great opportunity for someone self-directed and process- and detail-oriented who thrives on being organized and enjoys managing and designing systems. You should also be comfortable with frequent professional email communication with sponsors and other stakeholders. You will join a small-but-mighty, talented and friendly team in a mission-oriented environment, with ample opportunities to learn, take ownership, and follow your own initiative in a supportive environment. We are a small organization serving a big mission, and we are looking for great employees who can become an integral part of our fully-remote team. This is a great opportunity to build on or develop nonprofit fundraising and operational experience and to work in the vibrant open source technology sector.

About the PSF: The PSF’s mission is to promote, protect, and advance the Python programming language, and to support and facilitate the growth of a diverse and international community of Python programmers. By several measures, Python is the most popular programming language in the world, used everywhere from the Mars rover to under the hood of Instagram. In fact, a large share of the global tech sector depends on Python, including the burgeoning field of AI. We’re proud that first-time coders around the world are often introduced to coding through Python, and that Python assists research scientists in diverse fields in their work. As a result of the key role Python plays globally, the community we support counts millions of Python developers and enthusiasts and stewarding the Python language and ecosystem is a weighty responsibility. We serve our mission by protecting the fundamental Python IP and infrastructure, running the PyCon US conference annually, funding other Python conferences/workshops around the world with our grants program, and supporting  Python-related development and security work through our Developers in Residence program.

Details

  • Location: Remote, US-based only. Authorization to work in the US is required. (Unfortunately as a small nonprofit we are unable to sponsor work visas.)
  • Compensation: $70K–$85K annually
  • Full-time
  • Available benefits include a generous healthcare plan and a 401(k) plan.
  • While the PSF has busy parts of the year, we offer PTO, summer half-day Fridays, and holidays. We believe rest and renewal makes us all our best selves both at home and at work
  • Preferred travel: One domestic trip per year to PyCon US.
  • Reports to the Deputy Executive Director

Responsibilities:

Sponsorship admin (~60%),

  • Tracking sponsorship renewals, status, deadlines, and benefits
    • This is boiled down to a single line, but this represents quite a lot of the work that will make up the role.
  • Managing sponsorship agreement process & maintaining agreement files
  • Fulfilling sponsor benefits
  • Sponsor “customer support”
  • Managing and improving sponsorship-related processes, systems, and documentation

Sponsorship prospecting/outreach/relationship management (~15%)

  • Researching prospective sponsors
  • Contacting prospects & existing sponsors re. renewal
  • Collecting & integrating sponsor feedback
  • Sponsor relationship stewardship

Sponsorship program materials (~5%)

  • Updating prospectus
  • Creating guides and reference materials for sponsors
  • Maintaining sponsor-facing resources on the python.org and us.pycon.org websites

Individual donor support (~10%)

  • Regular outreach to significant/recurring individual donors
  • Supporting year-end fundraiser & other drives

Grant support (~5%)

  • Occasional support on research related to grant opportunities and grant proposals

Miscellaneous PyCon US support (~5%)

Requirements (and nice-to-haves, as marked)

Core required skills:

  • Excellent attention to process/recordkeeping detail
  • Excellent information & process organization skills
  • Strong ability to improve and design systems
  • Strong communication skills, particularly “customer service” type skills such as communicating with groups of stakeholders like volunteers, clients, funders, etc.
  • Strong internal motivation/independent worker
  • Flexibility and eagerness to jump in and support a scrappy team and receive that support in return

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Professional verbal and written English skills
  • US-based & authorized to work in the US
  • 4+ years professional experience total
  • 3+ years experience in a role with significant responsibilities related to organization of tasks, information/data, or people (examples for illustration purposes only; many types of experience may meet this requirement:  grant management, donor management, volunteer organizing, bookkeeping, inventory management, HR administration, etc., etc.)
  • 1+ years experience in a role requiring frequent and professional communication with a significant number of stakeholders (e.g. customers, internal clients, volunteers, community members, etc.)
  • 1+ years successful experience working fully remote
  • Fundraising experience not required (but a plus)
  • Nonprofit experience not required (but a plus)
  • Open source/Python/tech experience not required (but a plus)

We believe that the future of open source must include everyone. We welcome all job-seekers regardless of race, color, ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, physical appearance, body size, socio-economic, veteran or disability status. Python is a global community and the PSF aims to support a safe environment for all. More information can be found on our Code of Conduct page.
