Job description

For People is a team of skilled technologists improving government digital services for disadvantaged and vulnerable populations. We embed directly in government agencies to modernize software, systems, and platforms so that they better serve people.Your Impact
Someone on Medicaid hands a prescription to a pharmacist and finds out, right there at the counter, whether it is covered and what it will cost. That answer was settled long before they walked in, through rebate agreements and pricing data that determine what states pay for medication, and through safety checks that flag when two prescriptions should not be taken together.
For People and its partners build the system at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services behind those answers. It is how the federal government tracks drug pricing across every state Medicaid program, holds drug manufacturers to the agreements they signed, and returns billions of dollars in rebates to state and federal budgets each year. Much of it runs on software that has been added to for years without ever being fully rethought.
You will be one of the engineers rethinking it. You will work on the back-end of the platform, including the services, the data, and the interfaces everything else depends on as part of a small scrum team inside a larger program. That means shipping new features and steadily modernizing what is already there, including the next version of the program's drug utilization review tools and the checks that help catch dangerous prescription combinations before they reach a patient. Our Culture
For People is a team of humans. We place a significant amount of emphasis on positive work-life balance, setting healthy expectations, and making sure our loved ones are taken care of first.
This position is 100% remote. Our entire team is remote across the United States, from the West Coast to the East Coast. There will never be a return-to-office, as we have none!
This position's published base salary range is between $100,000 and $120,000 annually. All positions include generous benefits (e.g., For People pays 100% of Gold-tier employee health insurance premiums) and annual company profit sharing.
Occasional travel (1 or 2 times per year) is required for in-person program planning. These trips are infrequent and scheduled well in advance.Your Opportunities
On the Medicaid Drug Program project, you will work primarily on the back-end of the platform to:
  • Design, develop, and maintain the services and interfaces behind the platform using Java and the Spring Boot framework
  • Work with relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL, for efficient data storage, retrieval, and management
  • Contribute to the next version of the program's drug utilization review tools
  • Help lead the team's automated testing practice, including unit, integration, and performance tests
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve issues in the production system
  • Write clean, scalable, and maintainable code aligning with the team's coding standards, and offer constructive feedback through code review
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies such as sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and quarterly planning across teams
You Bring
  • A humble and caring attitude aligning with For People's values- how we work with passion, fun, curiosity and sustainability, humility and respect
  • 3+ years of professional software development experience
  • Strong Java programming ability, including working proficiency with the Spring Boot framework
  • Solid database design and data modeling skills, with experience creating and maintaining data models
  • Proven ability to read, understand, and safely change a large codebase you did not write
  • Experience with version control systems, such as Git, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines
  • Experience writing automated tests and working in Agile development environments
It Would Be Great If You Also Have
  • Familiarity with front-end frameworks such as Angular. This won't be a core responsibility area, but the application is Angular-based, and occasionally flexing into the front-end is needed.
  • Hands-on experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure
  • Prior work on healthcare, Medicaid, or other public benefits systems

Some fine print. You will be working on a United States government platform, and they have a few basic requirements for contractors like ourselves. You must perform all work physically within the United States at all times. In addition, you must be a United States citizen and be able to pass a government-performed public trust background check.
For People is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetics, and/or veteran status.
