What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Protocol Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Protocol Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, network protocols, and distributed systems, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in protocol design. Familiarity with programming languages such as Rust, Go, or C++, as well as tools like Wireshark, Git, and blockchain technologies, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective remote communication, and collaborative skills set exceptional candidates apart. These skills ensure the engineer can design, implement, and troubleshoot secure and efficient protocols in decentralized and remote work environments.

What is a Remote Protocol Engineer?

A Remote Protocol Engineer is a specialized software engineer who designs, develops, and maintains network communication protocols while working remotely. Their work ensures that different systems and devices can communicate effectively and securely over networks, such as the internet or internal company systems. They often collaborate with distributed teams, troubleshoot protocol-related issues, and may work on protocols for blockchain, IoT, or traditional networking. This role typically requires strong knowledge of networking concepts, programming languages, and security standards.

What are some common challenges Remote Protocol Engineers face when collaborating with distributed teams?

Remote Protocol Engineers often work with global, cross-functional teams, which can make real-time collaboration challenging due to differing time zones and communication styles. Additionally, ensuring clarity in technical specifications and achieving consensus on protocol changes can be more complex without in-person interactions. Successful engineers in this role usually develop strong written communication skills and leverage collaborative tools to bridge these gaps, fostering productive teamwork despite the remote setup.

About Ectobox

Ectobox is a Pittsburgh-based remote industrial intelligence solutions company facilitating growth and efficiency in U.S. manufacturers through digital transformations. We are experts in manufacturing data architectures and MES solutions. In our solutions we use open technologies, integrate data with a structured Unified Namespace, focus on solving the business challenges first, and drive more value with less complexity. The result is real-time visibility for solving many plant challenges using a scalable and flexible solution.

About the Role

Ectobox is seeking an Industry 4.0 Engineer to manage technical delivery of advanced MES, IIoT, and real-time data integration solutions for global manufacturing clients. This role is ideal for developers who bring both deep technical implementation expertise and a passion for mentorship, system quality, and continuous improvement.

You will collaborate closely with solution architects, project managers, and client teams to deliver scalable, secure, and high-performing Industry 4.0 systems. This position blends hands-on development with engineering leadership, making it ideal for someone who wants to shape the execution layer of digital transformation.

Key Responsibilities

System Development & Delivery

  • Deliver project implementation and execution of scalable MES, SCADA, and data platform solutions across manufacturing sites using Industry 4.0 Event-Driven Architectural practices
  • Build real-time data flows using but not limited to Data Brokers (MQTT/Sparkplug B), SQL Databases, HighByte DataOps, Canary Labs Historian
  • Develop and maintain tag models, scripting logic, and visualization layers in platforms like Ignition or Litmus
  • Integrate, troubleshoot, and optimize performance across edge, broker, and cloud layers

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Work closely with Solutions Architects and Project Managers to ensure alignment between technical design and business objectives
  • Serve as a technical liaison across client stakeholders, operations, and technical teams
  • Lead debugging, performance tuning, and reliability improvements for complex MES/IIoT implementations

Mentorship & Standards Enforcement

  • Provide technical guidance to junior developers
  • Conduct code reviews, design feedback sessions, and pair programming as needed
  • Drive adoption of clean architecture, secure design patterns, and reusable integration components

Security & Compliance

  • Implement and enforce secure transport protocols (TLS), broker hardening, identity management, and secure edge connectivity
  • Ensure all integrations comply with internal standards and client IT/OT security policies

Knowledge Sharing & Continuous Improvement

  • Document lessons learned, reusable code modules, and tested integration patterns
  • Maintain internal libraries, best practice guides, and delivery templates for future reuse
  • Research and adopt emerging tools, protocols, and best practices within the UNS and Industry 4.0 space

Candidate Profile

  • 3-5+ years of experience in MES/IIoT/SCADA development or OT systems integration
  • Proven track record of delivering data-intensive solutions in manufacturing environments
  • Effective communicator across technical and non-technical teams
  • Skilled in code quality, documentation, and repeatable system design
  • Skilled in code design, build, and maintenance of software programs
  • Experience in prompt engineering and leveraging LLMs to assist in code development and automated daily tasks, including the creation of agents and sub-agents to achieve desired outcome
  • Formal education in engineering, computer science, or automation is preferred but we prioritize proven experience in delivering MES/IIoT solutions.
  • US-based; travel up to 30% as needed
