What is a remote protocol engineer?

A Remote Protocol Engineer is a specialized software engineer who designs, develops, and maintains network communication protocols while working remotely. Their work ensures that different systems and devices can communicate effectively and securely over networks, such as the internet or internal company systems. They often collaborate with distributed teams, troubleshoot protocol-related issues, and may work on protocols for blockchain, IoT, or traditional networking. This role typically requires strong knowledge of networking concepts, programming languages, and security standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote protocol engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Protocol Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, network protocols, and distributed systems, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in protocol design. Familiarity with programming languages such as Rust, Go, or C++, as well as tools like Wireshark, Git, and blockchain technologies, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective remote communication, and collaborative skills set exceptional candidates apart. These skills ensure the engineer can design, implement, and troubleshoot secure and efficient protocols in decentralized and remote work environments.

What are some common challenges remote protocol engineers face when collaborating with distributed teams?

Remote Protocol Engineers often work with global, cross-functional teams, which can make real-time collaboration challenging due to differing time zones and communication styles. Additionally, ensuring clarity in technical specifications and achieving consensus on protocol changes can be more complex without in-person interactions. Successful engineers in this role usually develop strong written communication skills and leverage collaborative tools to bridge these gaps, fostering productive teamwork despite the remote setup.

What is the difference between Remote Protocol Engineer vs Remote Network Engineer?

Job description

About the Role:ย

The Junior OT/ICS Lab Engineer is a hands-on technical role supporting the design, build, testing, and validation of operational technology environments. You will work alongside senior engineers to create realistic OT lab systems, test Dragos detection and response capabilities,ย validateย platform performance, and support threat research activities.ย This role combines hands-on engineering work with exposure to real-world OT protocols, devices, and operational scenarios.ย

What We're Looking for:

You will need to be curious and hands-on. You understand networking fundamentals and are comfortable learning OT-specific concepts on the job.ย You'reย detail-oriented, methodical when troubleshooting, and not afraid to dig into technical documentation or ask for help when stuck. You work well in a collaborative environment, support other teams, and take ownership of lab infrastructure reliability.ย You'reย motivated by the mission-protecting critical infrastructure that civilization depends on-and you see thisย role as a springboard to deeper OT securityย expertise.ย

Responsibilities:ย

  • ย Lab Infrastructure & Operationsย
    • Build, configure, andย maintainย lab environments that simulate real OT operational scenariosย
    • Set up and manage industrial control systems (PLCs, RTUs, HMIs) and networked industrial devicesย
    • Deploy sensors, data collection tools, and monitoring infrastructure to capture OT network traffic and telemetryย
    • Document lab configurations, system topologies, and operational procedures for team referenceย
  • Testing & Validationย
    • Execute test plans to validate Dragos platform capabilities against simulated OT threats and normal operational activityย
    • Collect network traffic, device behavior, and telemetry data from lab systems to support research and product developmentย
    • Assistย in reproducing reported issues or edge cases in a controlled lab environmentย
    • Participate in threat scenario development and validation exercisesย
  • Support & Troubleshootingย
    • Troubleshoot lab infrastructure issues, network connectivity problems, and device configuration challengesย
    • Support internal and external teams requiring access to OT lab resources for research, testing, or validationย
    • Contribute to lab documentation, runbooks, and training materials for team onboardingย

Qualifications:ย

  • ย Required:
    • Strong foundationย in networking: OSI model, TCP/IP, subnetting, routing, firewalls, and network protocolsย
    • Hands-on experience building or working with lab/test environments; familiarity with virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V, KVM) or containerization
    • Basic understanding of IT infrastructure and security conceptsย
    • Comfortability working at the command line (Linux/Windows); scripting skills (Python, Bash, PowerShell) a plusย
    • Ability to follow technical documentation, troubleshoot systematically, and ask clarifying questionsย
    • Willingness to learn OT-specific protocols and operational technology fundamentalsย
    • Ability to perform basic fabrication and panel building, including mounting/installing panels toย engineeringย drawings and wiring devices and components. Welding, instrument fitting, and conduit work are notย requiredย for this roleย
  • Preferred:ย
    • Familiarity with industrial protocols (Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus, DNP3) or SCADA/HMI systemsย
    • Experience with network packet analysis tools (Wireshark,ย tcpdump) or protocol decodingย
    • Practical experience with PLCs, industrial IoT devices, or control system engineeringย
    • Experience with electrical troubleshooting (e.g., diagnosing circuits, relays, control wiring) is a plusย
    • Security certifications (Security+, CEH, GCIA) or cybersecurity courseworkย
    • Experience in critical infrastructure or manufacturing environmentsย
    • Familiarity with ICS security frameworks (NIST, NERC CIP, IEC 62443)ย
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical Engineering field (or equivalent practical experience)ย

Compensation:ย

  • Salary:ย  $105,000
  • Competitive Equity Packageย ย
  • Comprehensive Benefits Planย
