Remote Protocol Engineer information

What is a remote protocol engineer?

A Remote Protocol Engineer is a specialized software engineer who designs, develops, and maintains network communication protocols while working remotely. Their work ensures that different systems and devices can communicate effectively and securely over networks, such as the internet or internal company systems. They often collaborate with distributed teams, troubleshoot protocol-related issues, and may work on protocols for blockchain, IoT, or traditional networking. This role typically requires strong knowledge of networking concepts, programming languages, and security standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote protocol engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Protocol Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, network protocols, and distributed systems, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in protocol design. Familiarity with programming languages such as Rust, Go, or C++, as well as tools like Wireshark, Git, and blockchain technologies, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective remote communication, and collaborative skills set exceptional candidates apart. These skills ensure the engineer can design, implement, and troubleshoot secure and efficient protocols in decentralized and remote work environments.

What are some common challenges remote protocol engineers face when collaborating with distributed teams?

Remote Protocol Engineers often work with global, cross-functional teams, which can make real-time collaboration challenging due to differing time zones and communication styles. Additionally, ensuring clarity in technical specifications and achieving consensus on protocol changes can be more complex without in-person interactions. Successful engineers in this role usually develop strong written communication skills and leverage collaborative tools to bridge these gaps, fostering productive teamwork despite the remote setup.

Job description

Job Title: AI Solutions Architect
FLSA Status: Exempt
Full-Time
Location: Salt Lake City, UT; Washington, DC; or Remote

WHO WE ARE:

MGT is a leading provider of technology and advisory solutions serving state, local, and education government agencies (SLED) across the United States. Through client partnerships, MGT’s almost 1,200 employees impact communities for good by managing and securing critical networks, solving complex human capital and fiscal problems, elevating education systems, and advancing equity as a performance imperative. MGT partners with thousands of agencies as a trusted advisor delivering solutions that improve technology, operational, and economic performance to help communities thrive.

Founded in 1975, MGT initiated an ambitious restart in 2016, broadening the solutions portfolio to provide the most specialized solutions, tackling the most mission-critical problems that live at the top of the public agency leadership agenda. MGT drives over 20% compound annual organic growth and utilizes programmatic mergers and acquisitions to grow capabilities, attract top talent, and accelerate growth scale. Since 2020, MGT has successfully completed 13 acquisitions, driving over 60% compound annual inorganic growth.

Celebrating its 50th year in 2025, the firm attracts exceptional talent and empowers them to exceed client expectations as they navigate the dynamic demands of the clients we serve. Hear more about MGT’s culture in the words of our employees.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

The AI Solutions Architect will join MGT’s AI Operating Group (AI OG), which is responsible for internal AI tool development and client-facing AI solution delivery, primarily for state and local government clients. This is a hands-on consulting and building role focused on designing and delivering AI-powered solutions for real client problems across discovery, architecture, build, deployment, and iteration. In this role, you will:

  • Design end-to-end AI solution architectures for client engagements, from problem discovery through production deployment.
  • Build and implement retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, agentic workflows, and multi-agent systems using frameworks such as LangChain and LangGraph.
  • Architect data pipelines and integration patterns that connect AI capabilities to existing client systems and data sources.
  • Work with tool-layer integration standards, including Model Context Protocol (MCP), to connect agents with enterprise systems.
  • Develop reusable components, skills, templates, and accelerators that can scale across multiple engagements.
  • Collaborate with project leads, consultants, and subject matter experts to translate business requirements into technical specifications and solution designs.
  • Support internal product development across MGT’s AI tool suite.
  • Present technical architectures and solution recommendations to internal leadership and client stakeholders.
  • Participate in discovery sessions and workshops to identify high-impact AI use cases within client organizations.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  • Hands-on experience with one or more of the following: LLM-based application development, retrieval-augmented generation architectures, agentic design patterns, prompt engineering, or vector databases.
  • Strong technical problem-solving ability and a track record of building practical solutions that work in real operating environments.
  • Comfort working at the intersection of consulting and building, including the ability to sit with a client, understand an operational challenge, and translate it into a working AI architecture.
  • Ability to learn new technical capabilities, platforms, frameworks, and deployment patterns quickly.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with consultants, clients, executive leadership, and technical teams.
  • Ability to independently scope, architect, and deliver technical solutions with minimal oversight.
  • A builder mentality, with a bias toward figuring things out, shipping solutions, and iterating based on feedback.
  • Comfort with concepts such as RAG pipelines, agentic workflows, prompt engineering, cloud deployment, and AI solution architecture.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Three (3) or more years of professional experience; prior AI experience is not required if the candidate demonstrates strong technical problem-solving ability and a successful track record of building solutions.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience required.
  • Preferred experience in consulting, professional services, or client-facing technical delivery.
  • Preferred background in data architecture, ETL/ELT pipelines, or analytics platforms.
  • Preferred programming experience in Python or similar languages.
  • Preferred experience working with cloud-based AI services on any major platform.
  • Remote employees are expected to travel periodically to an MGT office or client location based on business needs.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE:

  • Within 30 days, you understand MGT’s current AI tool suite, architecture patterns, and active client engagements, and you have shipped something.
  • Within 90 days, you are independently architecting solutions for client projects and contributing to internal product development.
  • Within six (6) months, you are leading technical delivery on engagements, mentoring team members on AI solution patterns, and shaping MGT’s approach to new AI use cases.

WHY MGT:

You will join a team that is actively building and shipping AI products. MGT has real tools in production, real clients using them, and a leadership team that understands both the technology and the business.

This is a high-visibility role with direct access to senior leadership and the opportunity to shape how AI is delivered across the organization. As MGT builds the AI practice from the ground up, this role will have meaningful influence on the tools, processes, and culture of the team.

Our philosophy is clean data foundations first, AI layered on top; process understanding before automation; and empowering domain experts to build rather than centralizing AI capability in a silo.

WHAT WE OFFER:

Our world-class work environment encompasses flexible and remote work options, a commitment to equity, and nationally respected teams in management consulting and technology services. We also offer opportunities to make a profound social impact through innovative projects, and professional development opportunities for career growth. Here you can read more about our extensive Employee Value Proposition (EVP).

Specifically, we will offer you a competitive compensation package including:

  • Flexible paid time off
  • 5% 401K matching program
  • Equity opportunities
  • Incentive and bonus programs
  • Up to 16 weeks of paid parental leave
  • Flexible spending accounts

Full-health benefits with base employee coverage fully funded, comprising:

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Life insurance
  • Short and long-term disability coverage
  • Income protection benefits
