Remote Project Architect information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Project Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Project Architect, you need a professional degree in architecture, architectural licensure, and solid experience in design development and project management. Proficiency with BIM software such as Revit, AutoCAD, and collaboration platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams is typically required. Exceptional communication, self-motivation, and organizational skills help you coordinate with distributed teams and clients. These capabilities ensure projects are delivered effectively, on time, and within budget, even when working remotely.

How does a Remote Project Architect effectively coordinate with clients and multidisciplinary teams across different locations?

As a Remote Project Architect, communication and collaboration are central to success. You'll frequently use digital tools like BIM platforms, video conferencing, and project management software to keep all stakeholders aligned and projects moving forward. Regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and proactive updates help bridge geographic gaps and ensure design intent is maintained. Being proactive about time zone differences and fostering a culture of transparency are key strategies for building strong working relationships remotely.

What is a Remote Project Architect?

A Remote Project Architect is a licensed architect who plans, designs, and oversees building projects while working from a location outside the traditional office, often from home. They collaborate with clients, consultants, and contractors using digital tools and software to manage projects remotely. Their responsibilities include creating architectural drawings, ensuring code compliance, and coordinating all phases of the design and construction process. Remote Project Architects must have strong communication skills and be adept at using collaboration platforms to keep projects on track. This role offers flexibility but also requires a high level of organization and self-motivation.

Job description

At Gensler, we design for people. By combining our global perspective with local expertise, we innovate at every scale. We are more than designers-we are craftspeople, visionaries, and thought leaders. Driven by passion and entrepreneurial spirit, our teams bring new ideas forward to solve complex challenges. Whether you are sketching new concepts, refining building strategies, or cultivating client relationships across global markets, there is a place for you here.

Our expertise spans a wide range of sectors, including aviation, transportation, education, hospitality, retail, and technology. Whether refreshing a retailer's brand, planning a new urban district, or designing a supertall building, our goal is to make everyday environments more inspiring, resilient, and impactful.

Your Role

As a Gensler Project Architect, you will collaborate with and lead talented designers who help shape the future of the built environment. You will contribute to all phases of design, including concept development, construction documentation, and construction administration. We are looking for team members who pair creativity with strong technical expertise and who are committed to guiding clients as they evolve and grow their brands.

Our Atlanta office has a thriving Retail and Consumer Experience practice and is looking to expand our team. As a Project Architect within this group, you will help deliver worldclass retail environments by integrating design excellence, technical rigor, and strategic thinking. You will work with a multidisciplinary team from concept through completion and serve as a trusted client partner, team leader, and steward of Gensler's commitment to quality, innovation, and impact.

What You Will Do

  • Perform technical design assignments, including programming client needs, developing conceptual diagrams and models, producing technical studies, and generating construction documentation.
  • Engage directly with clients and stakeholders to obtain necessary approvals.
  • Manage client, team, and project coordination, including documentation integration with engineering and specialty consultants.
  • Support communication among project teams, clients, vendors, contractors, consultants, and permitting officials.
  • Provide design and documentation support throughout project execution.
  • Collaborate with external consultants, product representatives, furniture dealers, and fabricators.
  • Lead coordination with local jurisdictions for permit submissions, plan review responses, and approvals.
  • Oversee the bid process, including issuing bid sets, responding to RFIs, and evaluating contractor proposals with clients.
  • Manage construction administration activities, including site visits, submittal reviews, RFI responses, and contractor coordination to ensure design intent.
  • Guide project progress through punch lists, final inspections, and closeout documentation.
  • Mentor junior staff through technical guidance, project involvement, and daily support.

Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture from an accredited program.
  • 6-10 years of relevant architectural experience, including multiple building typologies within retail practice.
  • Strong knowledge of construction drawings, building codes, permitting, and construction administration.
  • Proficiency in Revit (required).
  • Excellent understanding of building systems, standards, and structures.
  • Collaborative, teamoriented mindset.
  • Selfmotivated, responsible, and highly driven.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to lead and coordinate with consultants, contractors, and clients.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships across the firm and with external partners.
  • Demonstrated commitment to resilience and sustainable design practices.
  • Registered / Licensed Architect (candidates actively pursuing licensure may contact nicole_kumar@gensler.com regarding alternative opportunities).

Please include a portfolio of work samples and review the qualifications above to ensure alignment with this role.

This role is fully inoffice; remote or hybrid arrangements are not available. We look forward to welcoming our new Architect to our dynamic Atlanta studio.
