Job description
This position is located in the Environmental Enforcement Section, Washington, D.C. The incumbent will provide a variety of administrative and clerical support to legal staff including attorneys. If selected, you may be able to work full-time if your class schedule allows.

Who May Apply: Applicants must be CURRENT students in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional; technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree program; or other qualifying education institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.
As a Student Trainee, your typical work assignments may include the following:
- Use office automation software and equipment to type, edit, and format letters, memoranda, reports, technical documents, charts, graphs, and/or forms.
- Facilitate the exchange of information between attorney, paralegal, and litigation support staff.
- Organize meetings for attorneys (including arranging the time and place), arrange conference calls, reserve conference rooms, and ensure that equipment for the conference room is in place and working.
- Receive incoming telephone calls and visitors.
- Answer inquiries related to general policy, programs, and activities of the office.
- Receive, sort, and route incoming mail and correspondence to office staff.
- Assist in closing cases by purging duplicate documents, ensuring that relevant documents are included with the case file, and preparing an index of the file contents.
- Send, receive, distribute electronic mail and fax documents; prepare Federal Express mailings; and operate office photocopiers and scanners.

- If this is your first appointment in the Federal service, your salary will be set at Step 1 of the grade selected.
Qualifications
Student Pathways Program: This is a Student Internship opportunity that provides students enrolled in a qualifying educational institution with paid opportunities to work in Federal agencies while completing their education. This is a part-time position, but students can work a full-time tour as their school schedule allows. Students are expected to work at least one year in the position. Therefore, the expected date of graduation must occur on or after December 2027.
In order to qualify, candidates must meet the program requirements, qualification requirements, and typing proficiency listed below.
Program Requirements: Be enrolled or formally accepted for enrollment as a full-time or part-time student into an accredited college or university in a degree-seeking program or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. In accordance with U.S. DOJ Pathways Intern guidelines, the required education must be related to the field in which Interns will receive training on the job.
- Must be in good academic standing and maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
- If selected, must sign Student Pathways program agreement; furnish course registration information at the start of each school term; and provide verification of academic status (transcript) at the end of each academic term.
- Must be able to complete required occupation related work experience (640 hours) prior to or concurrently with the completion of course requirements for the degree.
- This position MAY be eligible for noncompetitive conversion to the competitive service. Conversion is not guaranteed and is subject to budgetary limitations and management approval.
Qualification Requirements:
In addition to the program requirements listed above, candidates must meet the minimum education or experience requirements to qualify for the 0399 series at the grade levels below:
GS-4: MUST have completed 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate degree, OR one year of general experience. General experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be qualifying. One academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.
Typing Proficiency: Applicants must be able to type 40 words per minute. You must self-certify your typing skill on the occupational/assessment questionnaire and your resume.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps; AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skill and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This is an Excepted Service appointment which may continue as long as the student maintains an active half-time or full-time enrollment status in a qualifying educational institution throughout the duration of their appointment. Students are initially appointed for a position not-to-exceed one year. However, continued employment is not guaranteed. Losing your student status results in a failure to meet basic eligibility requirements, leading to termination.
