Job description

Senior Substation Electrical Engineer

Overview:

You will provide engineering support for the design of substation facilities for 69kV and above for Client and its customers as an integral part of the Power Networks team. 

Responsibilities: 
Independently perform tasks that typically include:

  • Substation physical design including overall engineering and analysis for new switchyards and substations, additions and modifications.
  • Preparation of specifications and provide procurement support.
  • Preparation of engineering drawings including layout and general arrangements for all major equipment and structures required for high voltage switchyards or substation.  Drawings include site plans, plan and elevation views, grounding, conduit, lighting, lightning protection and shielding, control building arrangements and details, AC station service, DC systems and Bills of Material. 
  • Perform auxiliary electrical power system studies including load flow, short circuit, voltage drop, protection and coordination, ampacity, and battery sizing studies. 
  • Perform substation grounding calculations and studies, lightning protection and insulation coordination, lighting, bus calculations, transformer and bus sizing calculations, fault calculations, and AC and DC auxiliary system sizing calculations.
  • Perform proposal preparation, proposal estimates, and provide input to scope documents and client presentations. 
  • Work in a team-oriented environment with ability to work independently or as part of a group when and as required.
  • Responsible for the quality assurance of the documents to the applicable Client and client standards.
  • Commitment to customer service and ability to work independently on more varied and complex tasks when required.
  • Collaborate with project managers, drafters, civil/structural engineers, and field personnel.
  • Complete tasks in accordance with project procedures, applicable codes and/or standards, on schedule and within budget.
  • Discuss technical problems and communicate effectively with other project personnel and outside customers.
  • Perform independent audits and reviews of technical work.
  • Perform the function of a team leader that is capable of solving complex issues and act as a lead engineer responsible for the quality of the deliverables.
  • Interface with outside customers.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers.
  • Ability to travel to job sites to perform site walkdown.
  • Responsible for the quality assurance of the documents to the applicable drawing standards and responsible for the proper document management procedures are followed.

What you will bring
Technical and Industry Experience: 

  • Experience with power system modeling and analysis tools (e.g., ETAP, CYME, SKM).
  • Highly effective technical and practical engineering skills and ability to consistently deliver quality, accurate and timely work to Client and its customers. A sound knowledge of the fundamental requirements of the electrical engineering, and the basic requirements of other engineering fields.
  • A sound knowledge of applicable local and international standards and statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Competent use of relevant software such as MS Office Suite.
  • Substantial technical land practical experience in electrical engineering in the same or similar industry including experience in working in multi-disciplinary projects and teams.
  • Experience in estimating project costs and writing proposal content.
  • Ideal candidate should have strong interpersonal and written communication skills that permit working efficiently alongside other senior substation engineers and designers in a team setting.

 
Education – Qualifications, Accreditation, Training:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and 8 or more years of experience in substation design.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States is preferred.
