Remote Power Electronics Intern information

What does a remote power electronics intern do?

A Remote Power Electronics Intern assists engineering teams in designing, testing, and analyzing power electronic systems and components, such as converters, inverters, and power supplies, while working remotely. Interns often use simulation software, create technical documentation, and help with data analysis or troubleshooting under supervision. This role allows students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the field of power electronics, often while collaborating virtually with professionals and attending remote meetings or training sessions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote power electronics intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Power Electronics Intern, you need a solid understanding of circuit theory, power electronics fundamentals, and relevant coursework in electrical engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools like MATLAB/Simulink, SPICE, and proficiency in CAD software are typically required, along with experience using laboratory equipment. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills help interns stand out in this position. These skills and qualities are essential for successfully contributing to projects, collaborating with teams remotely, and applying technical knowledge to real-world challenges.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a remote power electronics intern expect during their internship?

As a Remote Power Electronics Intern, you can expect to work on projects such as designing, simulating, and testing power electronic circuits, as well as supporting the development of prototypes and conducting research on new technologies. Daily tasks often include analyzing circuit performance, creating technical documentation, and collaborating with senior engineers through virtual meetings and project management tools. Interns are typically encouraged to ask questions and contribute ideas, making this a valuable opportunity to build technical skills and gain insight into the industry’s workflow.

What is the difference between Remote Power Electronics Intern vs Remote Electrical Engineering Intern?

AspectRemote Power Electronics InternRemote Electrical Engineering Intern
Required CredentialsEnrolled in Electrical Engineering or related field, basic knowledge of power electronicsEnrolled in Electrical Engineering or related field, foundational electrical knowledge
Work EnvironmentRemote, often in tech or manufacturing companies focusing on power systemsRemote, in various industries including energy, manufacturing, and tech
Industry UsageSpecific to power electronics, renewable energy, and power systemsBroader, covering general electrical systems and circuits

The Remote Power Electronics Intern focuses specifically on power electronic devices and systems, requiring knowledge in power conversion and control. The Remote Electrical Engineering Intern has a broader scope, covering general electrical systems. Both roles are remote, often in tech or energy sectors, but the Power Electronics Intern specializes in power systems, making it more niche within electrical engineering.

Job description

Job Description

The Senior Power Electronics Test Engineer helps develop and validate GaN power devices by designing SALT/HTOL test circuits and systems, evaluating device behavior in power converter circuits, creating MCU firmware for automated testing, supporting magnetics design, and troubleshooting hardware issues. This role works closely with cross-functional teams and prepares clear documentation to ensure reliable and repeatable long-duration testing.

Responsibilities:

1. Circuit Evaluation & Test System Development

  •  Analyze GaN device behavior within common power converter circuits.
  • Translate circuit and device behavior into appropriate SALT/HTOL stress conditions.
  • Design test circuits that safely and consistently apply required stress levels.

2. MCU Firmware Development

  • Develop and maintain C/C++ firmware for test automation, system control, and data collection.

3. Magnetics Support

  •  Assist with the design and optimization of inductors and transformers used in high-frequency GaN test setups.

4. Documentation & Communication

  • Produce clear documentation for test procedures, system configurations, and updates.
  • Generate concise technical reports summarizing waveform observations, converter behavior, and reliability outcomes.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge systems to ensure lessons learned are retained and reusable.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with 5+ years of experience, or Master’s degree with 3+ years.
  • Understanding of power converter circuits such as totem-pole PFC, flyback, and LLC.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ MCU firmware development (PWM, UART, I²C, SPI, ADC/DAC).
  • Experience with schematic/PCB design tools such as Altium Designer.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.
  • Familiarity with high-frequency magnetics (inductors/transformers).

Preferred

  • Experience with SALT, HTOL, or long-duration reliability testing.
