Job description

Company Description

J.S. Held is a global consulting firm that combines technical, scientific, financial, and strategic expertise to advise clients seeking to realize value and mitigate risk. Our professionals serve as trusted advisors to organizations facing high stakes matters demanding urgent attention, staunch integrity, proven experience, clear-cut analysis, and an understanding of both tangible and intangible assets.

The firm provides a comprehensive suite of services, products, and data that enable clients to navigate complex, contentious, and often catastrophic situations.

Job Description

We are seeking an entry-level Environmental Scientist to join our growing environmental consulting team in the Pacific Northwest, based in the Seattle, Washington area. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated, entrepreneurial individual with a well-rounded skill set to launch their career in environmental consulting.

This is a full-time, remote position with a strong focus on fieldwork.

In this role, responsibilities will extend beyond field activities to include data management and interpretation, report preparation, permitting, and other consulting-related tasks. As the team continues to grow, successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop project management skills and gain exposure to the full lifecycle of environmental consulting projects.

The ideal candidate is a flexible, proactive, and strategic thinker who is comfortable handling a variety of tasks. This position offers hands-on experience working with Washington State environmental regulations, particularly those related to site investigation and cleanup programs.

As part of a growing and collaborative team, you will benefit from strong mentorship and development opportunities. With J.S. Held’s global footprint, there may also be opportunities to support projects beyond the Pacific Northwest.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform environmental site assessment activities (e.g., Phase I and Phase II ESA tasks)
  • Conduct field sampling as part of remedial investigations (soil, groundwater, soil gas, etc.)
  • Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including at times in remote field locations
  • Coordinate with vendors, analytical laboratories, and provide subcontractor oversight
  • Support environmental cleanup projects through data collection, data management, and evaluation of remedial technologies
  • Assist with due diligence assessments related to environmental liabilities
  • Evaluate environmental impacts of industrial, commercial, and residential activities for a diverse client base
  • Support the development and recommendation of remedial solutions that meet Washington State regulatory requirements and client objectives
  • Prepare technical reports, including:
    • Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments
    • Remedial Investigation / Feasibility Study (RI/FS) reports
    • Cleanup Action Plans and associated documentation
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in geology, engineering, environmental science, or a related field
  • 0–3+ years of relevant work experience
  • Experience supporting the implementation of remediation technologies, as well as operations and maintenance activities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)
  • Highly motivated self-starter with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Flexibility to work outside normal business hours, as required
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Willingness to use a personal vehicle for work purposes (mileage reimbursed)

Preferred

  • Experience with sampling techniques, including soil, groundwater, soil gas, indoor air, surface water, and sediment
  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification
  • Professional certifications or licenses (e.g., Engineer-in-Training, Geologist-in-Training, or Underground Storage Tank Site Assessor)
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software

 Physical and Mental Job Qualifications

  • Ability to travel as needed, depending on project assignments
  • Ability to work outside and support physical activities including light lifting (15 pounds), equipment and material loading and handling, and at times, in inclement weather.
