Remote Plc Scada Automation Engineer information

What is a remote PLC SCADA automation engineer?

Remote PLC SCADA Automation Engineers are professionals who design, program, and manage automation systems that use Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software. They work remotely to develop, monitor, and troubleshoot control systems for industries such as manufacturing, energy, water treatment, and more. Their role involves configuring software, ensuring reliable data communication, and optimizing automated processes to improve efficiency and safety. Often, they collaborate with onsite teams and use secure remote access tools to perform their duties.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote PLC SCADA automation engineer?

To thrive as a Remote PLC SCADA Automation Engineer, you need a strong background in industrial automation, electrical engineering, and control systems, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with PLC programming software (such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley), SCADA systems (like Wonderware or Ignition), and relevant certifications (such as TIA Portal or Rockwell Automation) is expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure reliable automation solutions, minimize downtime, and support seamless collaboration with on-site teams and clients.

What are some common challenges faced by remote PLC SCADA automation engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote PLC SCADA Automation Engineers often face challenges such as troubleshooting system issues without physical access to equipment, ensuring secure remote connectivity, and maintaining clear communication with on-site teams. To address these challenges, it's important to utilize robust remote monitoring tools, follow strict cybersecurity protocols, and establish reliable communication channels with facility staff. Regular virtual meetings and thorough documentation also help in aligning goals and ensuring smooth project execution.

Staff Software Developer - AI & Platform

Auvik Networks

On-site, Remote

Full-time

Re-posted 14 days ago

Job description

Why should you consider joining Auvik?
  • You want to work at a company that is building impactful, relevant technology. Auvik's network management software helps IT teams by automating time-consuming tasks, streamlining operations, and mitigating risk. It's more important than ever to be able to remotely monitor and manage network infrastructure, and with Auvik, IT professionals have that essential visibility and control.
  • You want to work with a leadership team who are transparent and trustworthy. Our senior leaders have a vision for Auvik. They are experienced, knowledgeable, approachable, and consistently working hard to drive success, both for the company and the team of people who make it happen.
  • You want to work with a product customers love. People rave about what we've built. Our customers are smart, aspirational, and highly technical. It pays to get the details right.
  • You want regular opportunities for learning and growth. With ongoing feedback from leadership, you'll find that Auvik encourages you to be your very best. Our onboarding process is thorough and informative because we want to make sure you're prepared to have a great work experience. We also have programs designed to help you take the next steps you want for your career.
  • You want the flexibility to manage your work, your way. We're a fully distributed team and we're prepared to continue to support working from home (or the space you choose!). We trust you to get the job done where you feel most comfortable and effective.

What's this role about?

As a Staff Software Developer on Auvik's AI & Platform team, you'll be a hands-on technical leader building the AI-powered capabilities in our product. You'll work alongside a Staff Data Engineer (who owns the data foundation) and report to the Engineering Manager. Your focus is on the application and agentic AI layer: designing, building, and shipping the AI features that customers interact with. This is a code-heavy role with broad technical influence across the team.

What will I be doing?

  • Design and build AI-powered product features, including LLM-based agents, intelligent automation, and predictive capabilities that operate on Auvik's operational data.
  • Own complex technical problems end-to-end: architect solutions, write production-quality code, debug across systems, and ship reliably.
  • Work closely with the Data Engineer to define what data the AI layer needs, in what shape, and at what freshness, and integrate against the retrieval and pipeline infrastructure they build.
  • Collaborate with product managers and designers to translate customer needs into well-scoped AI features that deliver real value.
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging AI technologies (LLMs, agent frameworks, RAG patterns, fine-tuning approaches) and make pragmatic build-vs-buy decisions.
  • Lead by example in code reviews, technical design discussions, and engineering best practices. Mentor other developers on the team.
  • Contribute to shared tooling, libraries, and patterns that accelerate AI development across the engineering org.

What are we looking for?

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals with significant experience building and shipping production systems at scale.
  • Hands-on experience building AI/ML-powered product features, including working with LLMs, prompt engineering, RAG architectures, or agent frameworks.
  • Proficiency in Go, Scala, or TypeScript (React/GraphQL). Experience with Python for ML workflows is a plus.
  • Deep understanding of system design, distributed systems, and the ability to make sound architectural decisions in ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Hands-on experience with agentic coding tools (e.g., Cursor, Copilot Workspace, Claude Code), including setting guardrails and verifying outputs.
  • Strong communication skills. You'll work directly with AI engineers, product managers, and engineering leadership and need to move fluidly between technical and business conversations.
  • A product mindset. You care about why something is being built and whether it solves a real customer problem.

Are there bonus points?

  • Background in network management, monitoring, or infrastructure software.
  • Experience with AI-driven automation, anomaly detection, or predictive analytics in an ops context.

We're actively hiring for this role and looking to bring someone great onto the team as soon as possible.

About Auvik

Auvik delivers cloud-based network management software that gives IT teams instant visibility and control over their infrastructure - whether on-site, remote, or dispersed across global networks. Our platform automates network discovery, mapping, monitoring, configuration backups, traffic analysis and alerting, so IT professionals and MSPs can manage complex, multi-site environments with ease.

We're focused on building a diverse and inclusive workforce. If you're excited about this role, but do not meet 100% of the qualifications listed above, we encourage you to apply. We are happy to make any accommodations you may need throughout the interview process as well.

Auvik is an Equal Opportunity Employer and considers applicants for employment without regard to race, colour, religion, sex, orientation, national origin, age, disability, genetics or any other basis forbidden under federal, provincial, or local law.

Hiring Process

At Auvik, our hiring process is designed to be personal, transparent, and human-led. Our Talent Acquisition Partners review all resumes, connect with candidates whose skills and experience aligns with the role, and stay in communication with you throughout your journey. If our interests align, you'll meet with a hiring manager, as well as additional members of the hiring team in follow-up conversations. All of your interviews will take place via Zoom.

Before meeting with a hiring manager, we also ask candidates to complete a 5-minute Predictive Index (PI) assessment. This helps us understand and match your strengths and work preferences with roles that will set you up for success.

We use AI tools to support administrative tasks in the hiring process; such as helping source candidates, drafting communications, and interview summaries, so our team can stay focused and present during conversations. We do not use AI tools to interview, screen or assess candidates; or determine who moves forward in the process. We debrief and consider the full context of every conversation before making hiring decisions. We believe hiring requires judgment that can be augmented but, not replaced by AI.
