Remote Plant Genome Editing information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Plant Genome Editing Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Plant Genome Editing Specialist, you need a strong background in plant biology, molecular genetics, and experience with genome editing techniques, typically supported by an advanced degree in a relevant life science field. Proficiency with CRISPR/Cas systems, bioinformatics software (like BLAST or Geneious), and remote collaboration platforms is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you excel in coordinating research and sharing findings with a distributed team. These skills are vital for ensuring precise genetic modifications, efficient collaboration, and successful project outcomes in remote scientific environments.

What are some common challenges faced when working remotely in plant genome editing, and how can they be addressed?

Remote plant genome editing professionals often face challenges related to limited access to laboratory facilities and collaborative troubleshooting. To address these, teams typically rely on detailed planning, robust digital communication tools, and close coordination with on-site staff for wet-lab work. Many remote roles focus on data analysis, experimental design, and literature review, allowing for significant contributions from a distance. Building strong relationships with lab-based colleagues and maintaining clear documentation are key to overcoming remote collaboration hurdles.

What is remote plant genome editing?

Remote plant genome editing refers to the process of modifying the genetic makeup of plants using digital tools and technologies that allow researchers to design, monitor, or even execute genetic edits from a distance. This approach leverages advances in bioinformatics, cloud-based platforms, and sometimes robotics or automated lab equipment, enabling collaboration and experimentation without being physically present in a laboratory. It is commonly used to improve crop traits, enhance resistance to diseases, or study plant functions more efficiently. Remote plant genome editing can increase accessibility for researchers and accelerate plant science innovations.

What is the difference between Remote Plant Genome Editing vs Remote Plant Biotechnologist?

AspectRemote Plant Genome Editing

AspectRemote Plant Biotechnologist

Remote Plant Genome Editing focuses on precise gene modifications in plants using techniques like CRISPR, often requiring specialized knowledge in molecular biology and genome editing tools. Remote Plant Biotechnologists have a broader role, including developing plant-based solutions, conducting research, and applying biotechnological methods, which may include genome editing but also encompasses other biotechnologies. Both roles typically require a background in biology or biotechnology, but genome editing roles emphasize technical skills in gene editing techniques. Employers in agriculture, research institutions, and biotech companies frequently hire both roles for remote work, with overlapping credentials but different focus areas.

POSITION SPECIFICS

The research labs of Marcia Buanafina in the Department of Biology and Caio Brunharo in the Department of Plant Science are seeking to jointly hire a Postdoctoral Scholar. The postdoctoral scholar will split their time 50/50 between the two labs. The project in Buanafina lab is focused on the functional characterization of putative arabinoxylan feruloyl transferase genes involved in grass cell wall feruloylation and in Brunharo lab in the development of rapid, field-deployable diagnostic tools for herbicide resistance detection in weed populations. Both labs make use of Biochemical and Molecular approaches.

Buanafina lab Responsibilities include:

  • Functionally characterize candidate arabinoxylan feruloyl transferase genes using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing and targeted overexpression in Brachypodium

  • Identify and validate homozygous mutant lines from T-DNA insertion populations through PCR-based genotyping

  • Contribute to other ongoing research projects led by the PI

  • Collect, document, and analyze experimental data

  • Assist in supervising undergraduate students

  • Contribute to general laboratory operations and a collaborative research environment

Brunharo lab Responsibilities include:

  • Design CRISPR-based detection assays for herbicide resistance

  • Develop lateral flow assay platforms that enable field-deployable herbicide resistance diagnosis

  • Enhance existing lab-based methods for herbicide resistance detection

  • Contribute to general laboratory operations and a collaborative research environment

  • Contribute to other ongoing research projects led by the PI and graduate students

  • Lead peer-reviewed publications, patents, and Extension articles

Education and Experience:

A Ph.D. in Plant Molecular Biology or related filed is required, with demonstrated expertise in molecular cloning, vector construction and genetic transformation. Experience with analytical and imaging techniques such as microscopy, LC-MS, FTIR/Raman spectroscopy is a plus. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to manage multiple projects, work independently, and maintain a strong work ethic and high level of self-motivation.

Additional Information:

Please include a cover letter that summarizes relevant experience and reasons for interest in the job, along with a C.V. that includes contact information for two references (name, position, mailing address, telephone number, and email address). Review of applications will be immediately and continue until the position has been filled.
