Both roles require similar certifications and work in related environments, but their responsibilities differ in project phase focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Pipeline Pre Commissioning Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Pipeline Pre Commissioning Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or chemical engineering, experience in pipeline systems, and relevant industry certifications such as CSWIP or NACE. Familiarity with pre-commissioning tools like hydrotesting equipment, drying systems, pigging tools, and specialized software for monitoring and reporting is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are crucial for coordinating remote teams and ensuring project safety. These competencies ensure pipeline integrity, regulatory compliance, and the safe, efficient execution of pre-commissioning activities in remote locations.

What does a Remote Pipeline Pre Commissioning Engineer do?

A Remote Pipeline Pre Commissioning Engineer is responsible for preparing pipelines for operation by conducting various tests and procedures before they are put into service. Their tasks typically include cleaning, gauging, hydrotesting, dewatering, and drying the pipeline to ensure it meets safety and operational standards. They often use specialized equipment and operate remotely to monitor and control these processes, ensuring the pipeline is free from defects and contaminants. This role is critical for preventing leaks, ensuring pipeline integrity, and complying with industry regulations. Remote work capabilities allow them to oversee projects from various locations using digital tools and communication platforms.

What are the main challenges faced by a Remote Pipeline Pre Commissioning Engineer, and how can they be managed effectively?

A Remote Pipeline Pre Commissioning Engineer often deals with the challenges of coordinating complex operations across multiple locations, ensuring safety and compliance with strict industry standards, and managing communication with on-site teams from a distance. Effective management involves leveraging digital tools for real-time monitoring, maintaining detailed documentation, and fostering strong collaboration with field personnel. Proactive planning and clear communication channels are essential to troubleshoot issues quickly and ensure that pre-commissioning activities, such as cleaning, pressure testing, and drying, are executed efficiently and safely.

Job description

Who we are:
EDAG Inc. is a globally leading, independent engineering services provider that combines excellent engineering with the latest technology trends. We are the experts in the all-round development of complete vehicles and smart factories. Our interdisciplinary expertise in the areas of software and digitalization means that we have the crucial skills to actively shape dynamic transformation processes as an innovative partner.
Development with passion. That's us.
With an interdisciplinary team of around 9,000 experts, EDAG develops unique mobility and industrial solutions for customers that include the world's leading automotive and non-automotive companies.
This is how you will grow:
EDAG is the United States partner for fe.screen-sim, F.EE GmbH's 3D simulation software for plant planning, digital twins, and virtual commissioning. We are seeking a Senior Virtual Commissioning Engineer to develop and validate digital models of automated manufacturing systems for automotive and industrial applications. In this role you will work across mechanical, electrical, controls, and software disciplines to create high-fidelity virtual commissioning solutions, improve engineering workflows, and help ensure the smooth startup of real-world equipment.
As the technical backbone of the fe.screen-sim offering in the US, you will build the simulation models that deliver customer value, help stand up first-level support and training, and - with hands-on enablement from F.EE - grow into the customer-facing demos and technical sales that drive the partnership
Key responsibilities -
Core engineering
  • Design and develop virtual commissioning and simulation models for automated production equipment and manufacturing processes in automotive and general-industry environments.
  • Create digital models independently to support the virtual validation of manufacturing systems, controls logic, and process behavior.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, controls, and software engineering teams to ensure the virtual model accurately reflects the physical system and supports an efficient engineering workflow.
  • Support validation and testing activities using digital models to identify issues early and improve commissioning readiness.
  • Develop engineering utilities, automation workflows, and model-generation tools to improve efficiency and standardization.
  • Track assigned tasks, document findings, and communicate results and recommendations to project stakeholders on a regular basis.

Partnership delivery
  • Deliver model-creation and digital-services engagements for fe.screen-sim customers - a primary value stream of the US partnership.
  • Help stand up and run first-level customer support and training - the capability that anchors the long-term support model with F.EE.
  • Become the resident fe.screen-sim expert: integration, configuration, troubleshooting, and best practices.

Customer-facing
  • Deliver technical workshops and demos. F.EE leads the provide technical workshop and dedicated sales-training program; you absorb that capability over time.
  • Support the technical sales cycle as the credible engineering voice: solution scoping, ROI framing for virtual commissioning, and answering the hard technical questions.
  • Contribute to building the US pipeline of net-new accounts across automotive and suppliers, logistics, automation, and mechanical engineering.

Requirements
This is how you will take us forward:
Required qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field - or equivalent technical training with relevant professional experience.
  • Strong expertise in at least one of the following: CAD design, PLC programming, robot programming, or electrical design.
  • Several years of relevant experience in virtual commissioning, digital twin development, or industrial simulation.
  • Ability to quickly understand cross-functional technical topics and actively contribute to problem solving.
  • Hands-on experience with machine or plant software and commissioning activities (preferred).
  • Programming experience in higher-level languages (e.g., C#) is a plus.
  • US work authorization; based in or able to relocate to the Troy, MI area; willing to travel to US customer sites

Preferred qualifications
  • Experience with virtual commissioning and simulation platforms used in industrial automation (e.g., Process Simulate / Plant Simulation, DELMIA, Visual Components, Emulate3D, ISG-virtuos, or comparable).
  • Knowledge of automotive manufacturing processes, production equipment, and digital engineering methods.
  • Experience improving engineering workflows, automation libraries, or toolchains for model-based development.
  • Existing network in US automotive, supplier, logistics, automation, or mechanical-engineering manufacturing.
  • Prior customer-facing, pre-sales, or training experience a plus.

Professional skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; German language skills are a plus.
  • High level of initiative, flexibility, teamwork, and interest in innovative technical solutions.

What success looks like
  • Certified on fe.screen-sim and delivering production-quality simulation models.
  • First-level support and training capability stood up
  • Delivered technical workshop and begun leading demos independently.
  • Sourced and scoped digital-services / model-creation opportunities; contributed to net-new pipeline.
