How much do remote piece work jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for remote piece work in Ohio is $22.18, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $12.74 and $23.73 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is remote piece work?

Remote piece work is a type of employment where workers are paid based on the number of tasks or units they complete, rather than by the hour, and the work is done remotely, often from home. This arrangement is common in industries like data entry, transcription, freelance writing, and light manufacturing. Workers have flexibility in setting their own schedules but are compensated solely for their output. Remote piece work can offer autonomy, but income may vary depending on workload and efficiency. It's important to ensure clear agreements on payment rates and delivery expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a remote piece work role?

To thrive in remote piece work, strong time management, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently are essential, often with basic qualifications depending on the industry (e.g., data entry, assembly, or transcription). Familiarity with productivity tools, communication platforms, and sometimes specialized software relevant to the task is important. Self-motivation, reliability, and clear communication help individuals excel when working without direct supervision. These skills ensure high-quality output, meet deadlines, and maintain trust with employers or clients in a remote setting.

How is workload typically managed and communicated in a remote piece work position?

In remote piece work roles, tasks and assignments are usually distributed through digital platforms or project management tools. Communication with supervisors or team leads often happens via email, chat apps, or specialized software, allowing workers to access new tasks and submit completed work efficiently. It's important to clarify expectations for deadlines, quality standards, and reporting procedures early on, as remote piece work often requires a high degree of self-motivation and time management. Regular check-ins or status updates may also be requested to ensure alignment with project goals.

SCADA Engineer

Nexus Engineering Group

Maumee, OH • On-site, Remote

$85K - $120K/yr

Full-time

Job description

Nexus Engineering Group is employee-owned, full-service, and built by the people who do the work. As a SCADA Engineer, you’ll help design, analyze, and deliver electrical substation projects for utility and power delivery clients — with exposure across the full breadth of substation engineering.

As a SCADA Engineer, you will develop and support supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, RTU integration, substation automation, and communication networks that help clients monitor and operate critical electrical infrastructure safely and reliably. You will work alongside protection & controls engineers, designers, project managers, and clients to deliver integrated automation solutions across transmission, distribution, and industrial facilities.
Why Nexus

You’ll own a piece of what you build. Nexus is employee-owned through our ESOP, so the value you help create comes back to you — not just outside shareholders. We invest in early-career engineers and give them real work from the start.

What you can expect:

  • Employee ownership (ESOP) — build equity in the firm as it grows
  • Broad exposure across substation disciplines — physical design, P&C, studies, and field work — to help you find your path
  • Mentorship from senior engineers who review your work and help you grow
  • Full-service EPCm exposure, from concept through startup, across a diverse client base
  • Career paths that grow with you — toward technical leadership, project management, or discipline leadership
  • Flexible work arrangements where business needs allow
What You’ll Do
  • Design, configure, and support SCADA, RTU, HMI, and automation systems for utility and substation projects.
  • Develop SCADA architecture, communication diagrams, I/O lists, point databases, and system integration documentation.
  • Develop and review wiring diagrams, control schematics, communication drawings, and network layouts.
  • Coordinate with Protection & Controls engineers to integrate relay data, alarms, status points, and control functions into SCADA systems.
  • Support communication protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, IEC-61850, and Ethernet-based industrial networks.
  • Perform system testing, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and commissioning support.
  • Interface directly with clients, vendors, and project teams to define system requirements and resolve technical issues.
  • Assist with equipment specifications, procurement packages, technical evaluations, and construction support activities.
  • Participate in site visits, startup activities, troubleshooting efforts, and field investigations as required.
  • Ensure all deliverables meet client requirements, industry standards, and Nexus quality expectations.
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • 3+ years of SCADA, automation, controls, power delivery, utility, or industrial systems experience.
  • Experience with RTU configuration, control systems integration, or substation automation projects.
  • Experience interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and communication drawings.
  • Knowledge of SCADA and communication protocols including DNP3, Modbus, IEC-61850, or similar.
  • Familiarity with substation automation systems, relays, RTUs, HMIs, and communication networks.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or equivalent design software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure.
  • Experience with SEL RTACs, SEL relays, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories equipment, GE, ABB, Siemens, or similar utility automation platforms.
  • Experience supporting transmission or distribution utility clients.
  • Experience with networking, cybersecurity, and industrial communication systems.
  • Commissioning or startup experience.
Work Environment & Physical Demands

Work is performed in a hybrid environment that includes office, remote, and active project-site settings. This role may require:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer workstation, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Periodic travel to substations, construction sites, client facilities, and project locations
  • Site visits that may involve exposure to outdoor weather, energized electrical equipment, noise, heavy equipment, and active construction environments; appropriate PPE must be worn
  • The ability to walk uneven terrain, navigate outdoor substation yards, climb stairs, and access project-site areas, with or without reasonable accommodation

The posted salary range represents the anticipated base pay for this position in accordance with applicable pay-transparency requirements and may vary based on experience, qualifications, skills, certifications, work location, and market conditions.

In addition to base pay, eligible employees may receive:

  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) — an ownership stake and a share in the long-term success of Nexus
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus life and disability insurance
  • 401(k) with company match and discretionary bonus opportunities
  • Paid time off, holidays, and paid parental leave
  • Professional development and career advancement — training, certifications, licensure support, tuition assistance, and mentorship
  • Wellness benefits and a flexible schedule where business needs allow
