What is a remote pension risk transfer specialist?

A Remote Pension Risk Transfer specialist is a professional who helps organizations manage and transfer the financial risks associated with their pension plans, often working remotely. They typically advise employers on strategies such as purchasing annuities from insurance companies or executing lump-sum payouts to reduce pension liabilities. Their work involves analyzing pension plan data, assessing market options, and ensuring compliance with regulations. By working remotely, they use digital tools to communicate with clients and stakeholders, making their expertise accessible regardless of location.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote pension risk transfer specialist?

To excel in Remote Pension Risk Transfer, you need deep knowledge of pension plans, actuarial science, and financial risk analysis, often supported by a degree in finance, mathematics, or actuarial credentials. Familiarity with pension valuation software, data analytics tools, and regulatory compliance systems is typically expected. Strong communication, analytical thinking, and client management skills help build trust and explain complex concepts clearly. These competencies ensure accurate risk assessments, regulatory adherence, and successful client outcomes in a highly specialized, remote environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote pension risk transfer roles, and how can they be managed?

Remote Pension Risk Transfer professionals often navigate challenges such as collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams, managing complex data securely, and staying updated on regulatory changes. Since much of the work involves coordinating between actuaries, legal advisors, and clients, strong communication skills and the ability to leverage digital collaboration tools are essential. Additionally, professionals must be proactive in building relationships virtually and maintaining attention to detail when analyzing large datasets, as accuracy is critical in risk assessment and compliance.

Working in a highly cross-functional environment, you will partner with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Program Management, Procurement, and suppliers to ensure transfers are executed successfully while maintaining continuity of supply and minimizing disruption to operations and customers.

This is a project-driven and execution-focused role with responsibility for coordinating transfer planning, qualification, risk mitigation, production readiness, and implementation while ensuring cost, quality, delivery, and customer requirements are achieved.

  • 3 to 7 years of experience in project management, supply chain, manufacturing engineering, sourcing, industrialization, work transfer, or a related manufacturing environment. Aerospace and Defense experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex, cross-functional projects involving suppliers, Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain organizations.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and competing priorities.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, production planning, industrialization, and supplier qualification activities.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, bills of material, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify project risks and develop effective mitigation and recovery plans.
  • Experience tracking project schedules, milestones, key performance indicators, and status reporting.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems and project management tools used to manage schedules, inventory, and implementation activities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and experience with Power BI or similar analytical and reporting tools preferred.
  • Knowledge of configuration management, document control, and change management processes.
  • Understanding of AS9100 quality systems and applicable Aerospace and Defense regulatory requirements, including ITAR/EAR.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence and coordinate stakeholders across a global matrix organization.
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 30%.
  • For remote consideration, candidates must currently reside in an Ontic-approved registered state listed within this posting.
As a Work Transfer Specialist, you will:
  • Lead assigned work transfer projects from initiation through qualification, implementation, and production stabilization.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive project plans, schedules, milestones, deliverables, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate supplier-to-supplier and supplier site-to-site manufacturing transfers while maintaining continuity of supply and minimizing operational and customer disruption.
  • Serve as the primary cross-functional coordinator between Engineering, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, Program Management, Procurement, and external suppliers throughout the transfer lifecycle.
  • Manage project timelines and drive accountability across stakeholders to ensure key deliverables and implementation milestones are achieved.
  • Coordinate transfer readiness activities, including technical data package reviews, tooling and equipment transfers, inventory planning, supplier readiness, qualification activities, and production ramp-up.
  • Support First Article Inspection (FAI), validation, and other qualification activities required to achieve production approval.
  • Partner with Engineering and Quality teams to ensure technical, configuration, documentation, and quality requirements are successfully transferred and implemented.
  • Identify and proactively mitigate risks that could impact schedule, cost, quality, delivery, or customer commitments.
  • Monitor project performance and provide clear status updates on milestones, risks, issues, recovery actions, and overall transfer readiness to leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Ensure transfer activities comply with applicable customer requirements, regulatory obligations, and Quality Management System standards.
  • Support production stabilization following implementation and coordinate resolution of issues identified during ramp-up.
  • Capture lessons learned and support the continuous improvement of work transfer processes, tools, and governance.
  • Travel to supplier and Ontic locations as required to support transfer planning, qualification, implementation, and production readiness activities.
Our Benefits:
