Job Title: Association of Governance Director
Reports To: Senior Vice President of Leadership Development

Compensation: $115,000 to $135,000 annually
Status: Full-Time, Exempt - Currently Remote but MUST be based in California

About the Role:
California Association of REALTORS® is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Director of Association Governance to join our Leadership Development Team. This role provides strategic leadership for the organization's governance function, ensuring governance practices, processes, and operations support effective decision-making and align with the organization's strategic objectives while advancing any approved governance modernization initiatives. This role partners with executive leadership, volunteer leaders, and key stakeholders to strengthen governance effectiveness, drive continuous improvement, and enhance the member leadership experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee C.A.R.’s Board, committee, appointment, election, and related governance operations, ensuring effective execution and alignment with organizational priorities.
- Develop and maintain governance calendars, workflows, records and accountability systems that support effective governance operations.
- Partner with Legal, Meeting Services, Information Technology, executive leadership, officers, the parliamentarian, and staff coordinators to advance governance initiatives and support effective governance operations.
- Manage governance-related budgets, consultants, vendors, and technology resources, ensuring effective utilization, fiscal responsibility, contract performance, and alignment with organizational priorities.
- Identify governance risks, operational gaps, and emerging issues, and proactively recommend or escalate solutions as appropriate.
- Design, implement and continuously improve governance processes, policies, procedures, and systems to ensure they are efficient, well documented, and aligned with the organization’s bylaws and strategic objectives.
- Lead the planning and cross-functional implementation of approved governance modernization initiatives and other strategic priorities, including stakeholder engagement, technology adoption, process redesign, change management, and ongoing evaluation to strengthen the organization's governance framework.
- Provide strategic leadership for the governance function by establishing priorities, driving organizational improvements, and fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
- Evaluate and enhance C.A.R.’s governance framework to improve organizational effectiveness and the member leadership experience.
- Supervise, coach, and develop governance staff fostering accountability, collaboration, and operational excellence.
- Advise executive leadership, the Board, and volunteer leaders on governance best practices, governance matters, and organizational policy.
- Serve as the organization's subject matter expert on governance, providing strategic guidance on governance practices, compliance, and emerging trends.

Key Requirements:
Experience:
- 8-10 years of progressively responsible experience in governance, board and committee operations, nonprofit leadership, or a similarly complex membership or nonprofit environment
- Experience supporting governing bodies, developing governance processes, and leading staff or cross-functional initiatives with the ability to establish expectations, coach performance, and maintain accountability.
- Experience in association management, particularly as an Association Executive, in a comparable senior association leadership role, or within a REALTOR® association, is strongly preferred
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Skills:
- Strong process-management skills including the ability to create sustainable systems and procedures with clear workflows, taking ownership, adhering to deadlines, documentation and escalation practices.
- Requires a demonstrated ability to work with many different people and projects simultaneously while employing excellent interpersonal judgment and the ability to work effectively with elected leaders, volunteers, executives, staff, and cross-functional partners.
- Must be able to thrive in an atmosphere of continuous change and uncertainty, and provide effective leadership in a team environment.
- Thorough understanding of the principles of a volunteer-based Association and of working in a membership organization are essential.
- Knowledge of membership management software and of website content management tools is a plus.
- Requires a high level of organizational skill and detailed follow-through to complete projects or meet project deadlines.
- Must have sound judgment and the ability to handle sensitive or confidential information appropriately.
