About the Role

The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for the architecture, design, implementation, and ongoing operation of enterprise cloud services, with a primary focus on FedRAMP/GovRAMP-regulated environments.

This role leads the design and evolution of secure, scalable, and compliant platforms across AWS and Azure, ensuring solutions are supportable by a lean operations team while meeting federal regulatory and audit requirements. The engineer provides senior-level technical leadership, drives project execution, and ensures consistent application of operational and architectural standards across the PSIGov environment.

The role partners closely with infrastructure, security, DevOps, and compliance teams, as well as external vendors and federal stakeholders, to deliver and sustain a resilient and compliant federal platform.

Role Responsibilities

Federal Platform Architecture & Engineering

  • Architect, design, and implement cloud infrastructure and services within FedRAMP/GovRAMP boundaries, supporting current and future federal clients.
  • Lead integration of new clients into the federal platform, ensuring alignment with security, compliance, and operational standards.
  • Design scalable, cost-effective solutions across AWS and Azure that support long-term platform growth.

Compliance & Regulatory Execution

  • Implement, monitor, and maintain NIST 800-53 controls and supporting frameworks within regulated environments.
  • Support Continuous Monitoring (ConMon) activities, including evidence collection, remediation tracking, and audit readiness.
  • Ensure systems meet FedRAMP/GovRAMP operational, security, and reporting requirements on an ongoing basis.

Operational Excellence (Run + Reliability)

  • Oversee day-to-day operation of cloud infrastructure, ensuring availability, performance, and security across the federal environment.
  • Lead incident response, root cause analysis, and remediation for complex infrastructure and platform issues.
  • Proactively identify and resolve risks before they impact system availability or compliance posture.

Identity, Security, and Platform Governance

  • Design and manage identity and access management (IAM) solutions, enforcing least privilege and access controls.
  • Ensure infrastructure is hardened, patched, and aligned with CIS benchmarks and DISA STIGs.
  • Partner with security engineering to strengthen platform governance and reduce audit risk.

Infrastructure & Core Services

  • Design and support core services including compute, networking, storage, DNS, AD, and load balancing.
  • Manage hybrid identity and federation architectures supporting both federal and enterprise integrations.
  • Ensure enterprise services (e.g., domain services, email integration, certificates) are resilient and compliant.

Leadership & Delivery

  • Lead technical projects and coordinate cross-functional engineering teams to deliver platform capabilities.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers; act as escalation point for complex issues.
  • Maintain clear, accurate documentation of system architecture, controls, and operational procedures.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Requirements

Core Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be able to pass government background investigations.
  • 10+ years of experience in systems engineering or cloud infrastructure roles.
  • Proven experience supporting FedRAMP, GovRAMP, or similarly regulated environments.
  • Strong background in AWS and Azure architecture, design, and operations.

Technical Expertise

  • Deep understanding of:
  • Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Networking (VLANs, subnets, routing, firewalls, load balancing)
  • Core enterprise services (DNS, DHCP, AD, GPO, SMTP, SSL)
  • Experience with:
  • Identity federation and domain trust architectures
  • Office 365 integration and security
  • Infrastructure automation (PowerShell or similar)

Security & Compliance

  • Hands-on experience implementing and operating NIST 800-53 controls in production environments
  • Familiarity with:
  • FedRAMP Continuous Monitoring (ConMon) processes
  • Vulnerability management and remediation workflows
  • CIS Hardening Standards and/or DISA STIGs

Leadership & Execution

  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects and coordinate technical teams
  • Strong communication skills with ability to translate technical concepts for leadership and auditors
  • Ability to manage competing priorities across operations, compliance, and project delivery

Modern Engineering Practices

  • Experience leveraging automation and AI-assisted tooling to improve operational efficiency and solution design
  • Familiarity with DevOps principles and integration with CI/CD platforms (preferred)
