What is a remote OpenShift engineer?

Remote Openshift Engineers are IT professionals who specialize in designing, deploying, and managing Red Hat OpenShift environments while working from a remote location. They are responsible for maintaining containerization platforms, automating workflows, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring high availability and security of applications running on OpenShift. These engineers often collaborate with development and operations teams to support DevOps practices and enable scalable, cloud-native solutions.

How does a remote OpenShift engineer collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth deployment and maintenance of containerized applications?

Remote Openshift Engineers frequently work alongside developers, DevOps specialists, and IT operations teams to streamline the deployment and management of containerized applications. Collaboration is often facilitated through regular virtual meetings, shared documentation, and project management tools to coordinate tasks and troubleshoot issues. Being proactive in communication is key, as Openshift Engineers must ensure that infrastructure changes align with development needs and security requirements. They also contribute to knowledge sharing by documenting best practices and providing training or support to team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote OpenShift engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Openshift Engineer, you need expertise in Linux systems administration, container orchestration, and a solid understanding of Red Hat OpenShift, often supported by relevant certifications such as Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Administration. Familiarity with automation tools like Ansible, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work independently make someone stand out in this remote role. These skills ensure reliable deployment, scalability, and maintenance of containerized applications in distributed environments.

Job description

Description (50%+ Travel to deployment sites)

This role sits within PremierOne Field Engineering and is responsible for deploying, migrating, and supporting public safety platforms (CAD, RMS, and related applications) running on customer-owned infrastructure.

The field engineer acts as a generalist across servers, virtualization, operating systems, networking, storage, and application deployment. Much of the work follows standardized deployment procedures, but success depends heavily on troubleshooting skills and the ability to work directly with customer technical teams.

The team stages and configures infrastructure, deploys applications, performs hardware refreshes and migrations, restores databases, validates system functionality, and supports customers through cutover and transition activities. Engineers typically own 1–2 projects at a time and travel periodically for onsite deployments and migrations.

What Success Looks Like:

Successful candidates are typically "jack of all trades" infrastructure engineers rather than deep specialists.

The strongest profiles have experience across:

• Windows Server, Virtualization / Hypervisors, SQL Server, Active Directory, Networking fundamentals, Application deployment

Our customer emphasized that they could teach product-specific knowledge, but they cannot teach foundational infrastructure troubleshooting.

Core Responsibilities

Deployment & Migration

• Stage and configure PremierOne infrastructure environments

• Load firmware, operating systems, virtual machines, and application components

• Deploy and support CAD and RMS platforms

• Execute hardware refresh and migration projects

• Perform customer cutovers and go-live activities

Systems Administration

• Configure and maintain virtualized server environments

• Support Windows Server infrastructure

• Manage data migration and SQL backup/restore activities

• Support Active Directory-related configurations

Infrastructure Support

• Validate storage, compute, networking, and security components

• Work with firewalls, switches, routing, and IP addressing

• Troubleshoot issues across hardware, operating systems, applications, and infrastructure

Customer Interaction

• Gather technical requirements from customer IT teams

• Interpret and apply networking information provided by customers

• Support customers through deployment, migration, and transition phases

• Communicate technical issues and resolutions effectively

Additional Skills & Qualifications

FIT:

• Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to interpret logs, isolate root causes, and resolve complex infrastructure and application issues

• Customer-facing experience, including gathering technical requirements, validating environment details, and translating customer inputs into deployment and configuration activities

• Ability to work across multiple technologies as a well-rounded infrastructure generalist rather than a deep specialist in a single discipline

• Willingness to travel up to approximately 50% for customer deployments, migrations, and go-live support

Nice to Haves

• OpenShift / Red Hat; OpenShift exposure, Red Hat Linux experience, Kubernetes awareness, Experience supporting Linux-based virtualization platforms

• Storage & Infrastructure Platforms; HPE server environments, Storage administration, Enterprise infrastructure deployments

• Networking Vendors; Fortinet firewalls, Arista switches, Enterprise networking hardware

• Public Safety Applications; CAD systems, RMS systems, Public sector, government, or emergency services technology environments

• Field Deployment Experience; Rack-and-stack deployments, Hardware installation, Migration and cutover activities, Field engineering or systems deployment backgrounds
