What is a remote open source developer?

A Remote Open Source Developer is a software engineer who contributes to open source projects while working from a location outside of a traditional office. These developers collaborate with distributed teams, often using online platforms like GitHub or GitLab to share code and track issues. Their work involves writing, testing, and documenting code, as well as reviewing contributions from others. Remote Open Source Developers may be volunteers or paid contributors, and they typically engage with a global community to improve and maintain open source software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote open source developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Open Source Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Python, JavaScript, or C++), familiarity with open source workflows, and a solid understanding of version control systems like Git. Experience with collaborative platforms such as GitHub or GitLab, and familiarity with continuous integration (CI) tools, are typically expected. Excellent written communication, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently and asynchronously help you stand out in distributed teams. These skills and qualities are essential to effectively contribute code, engage with global communities, and maintain productivity in a remote, open-source environment.

How does a remote open source developer typically collaborate with distributed teams and community contributors?

As a remote open source developer, collaboration often takes place through online platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, and community forums. You will regularly participate in code reviews, contribute to discussions on issue trackers, and join virtual meetings or chat channels with both core team members and external contributors. Strong written communication skills are essential, as most interactions are asynchronous and require clear documentation. You'll also need to be proactive in seeking feedback and providing updates, ensuring smooth progress on projects across different time zones.

Job description

What You'll Do

We're seeking a Manager, Engineering to lead and scale our Transformers team as we build next-generation, intelligent products that transform how our clients work. You'll guide teams responsible for developing and delivering scalable, secure, and innovative cloud-based systems that are the heart of NetDocuments' Document transformation, OCR, and text extraction capabilities.

In this strategic leadership role, you'll drive the vision and execution of our Transformers initiatives, ensuring alignment across product, engineering, and business goals. You'll play a key part in defining our technical roadmap, mentoring engineering leaders, and fostering an environment of innovation, collaboration, and accountability.

This position reports to the Director of Engineering - Platform and will partner closely with peers across Product, Architecture, and Data Science to ensure cohesive delivery of enterprise-grade capabilities.

You will:

Drive Strategy & Execution

  • Shape and execute the long-term engineering strategy for Transformers initiatives, aligning technology direction with business priorities.
  • Collaborate with Product and Architecture leaders to translate customer needs and emerging technologies into scalable solutions.
  • Build and maintain a robust roadmap for the Transformers engineering organization, balancing innovation with operational excellence.
  • Oversee delivery execution across multiple teams to ensure high-quality, on-time releases.

Lead & Develop High-Performing Teams

  • Manage and mentor Engineers and Technical staff, fostering a culture of trust, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Guide hiring, performance management, and career development to build diverse, high-impact teams.
  • Create an environment that attracts top engineering talent and empowers them to deliver their best work.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Stakeholder Management

  • Partner with Product Management and Design to define priorities and ensure strategic alignment across departments.
  • Present technical strategies, roadmaps, and progress to senior leadership in clear, business-focused terms.
  • Serve as a bridge between technical and non-technical stakeholders-translating complex technical concepts into actionable business insights.
  • Drive engagement and communication across distributed teams and business units.

Technical Leadership & Oversight

  • Maintain strong working knowledge of technologies such as C#, React, microservices, AWS, and containerized deployments-but focus on guiding teams rather than day-to-day coding.
  • Champion best practices for architecture, reliability, and scalability across engineering and platform systems.
  • Ensure Automation solutions are designed securely and meet compliance, performance, and privacy standards.
  • Promote experimentation and responsible adoption of emerging AI technologies.

Culture & Innovation

  • Foster a growth mindset, continuous learning, and experimentation within the engineering organization.
  • Cultivate a collaborative engineering culture that values quality, innovation, and transparency.
  • Encourage contributions to open-source and knowledge sharing across the company.

What You'll Need to Be Successful

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years in engineering management roles.
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple teams or a group of 7+ engineers and leaders.
  • Proven ability to define and execute a technical vision in alignment with business strategy.
  • Strong experience leading distributed, cloud-based product development (Azure or AWS).
  • Deep understanding of modern engineering practices-CI/CD, microservices, and scalable architectures.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and executive communication skills.
  • Ability to synthesize complex technical information and present it effectively to leadership and cross-functional audiences.

What Will Make You Stand Out

  • Strong technical foundation in software engineering with the ability to mentor across technical domains.
  • A history of building high-performing, engaged teams that deliver impactful software.

  • The People!
  • 90% healthcare premiums company covered
  • HSA company contribution
  • 401K match at 4% with immediate vesting
  • Flexible PTO (typically 3 to 4 weeks a year)
  • 10 paid holidays
  • Monthly contributions for life activities & wellness
  • Access to LinkedIn learning with monthly dedicated time to explore

Compensation Transparency

The compensation range for this position is: $180,000 - $200,000

The posted cash compensation for this position includes on target earnings. Some roles may qualify for overtime pay.
